[The City of Cleveland will be renaming a portion of E. 22nd St near St. Vincent Charity Hospital after Sr. Ignatia during a ceremony on April 1st] From "When A.A. Came of Age": "...Dr. Bob [entered]...the doors of St. Thomas Hospital, the first religious hospital to receive prospective members of A.A. for treatment on a regular basis. Here there developed that great partnership between Dr. Bob and the incomparable Sister Ignatia...Sister Ignatia's night supervisor wasn't very keen about alcoholics, especially the d.t. variety, and Dr. Bob had arrived with a request for a private room for his first customer. Sister Ignatia said, 'Doctor, we do not have any beds, much less private rooms'...[but] then into the hospital's flower room she slyly bootlegged A.A.'s first jittering candidate for admission...From 1939 to the time Dr.Bob took leave of us in 1950, over 5,000 had thus been treated. -

VIA LATINA 22 # 296 - January 2021 News from the General Administration - Society of Mary Visit to Malawi From November 27 to December 8, the General Assistants for Education and Religious Life (Bro. Maximin Magnan, SM and Fr. Pablo Rambaud, SM), visited the communities and works of the Society of Mary in Malawi. The visit was scheduled for October, along with the rest of the Region of Eastern Africa, but the restrictions of the government of Malawi prevented it from taking place at that time. The two members of the General Council visited the communities located in Malawi: Karonga and Lilongwe. The trip between both places is long (about 9 hours), allowing them the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this country.. Bro. Maximin Magnan, SM and Fr. Pablo Rambaud, SM visit Chaminade Marianist Secondary School in Lilongwe Our Marianist presence in Karonga has a long tradition and is currently linked to the technical institute MIRACLE(Marianist Institute of Rural Artisans for Christian Life Education), www.miracletech.ac.mw. A community of four religious works there at different levels of responsibility and ministry. For a few years now, the Marianist Sisters (FMI) have also had a community in Karonga, which has made it possible to have several joint meetings of both communities. The Lilongwe community is much newer, barely a year old, and is linked to the new Chaminade Secondary School. At the moment, there are only 80 first-year students, but admissions for next year are already complete... and there are more than 500 applications for each year! This community, made up of five brothers, has the great challenge of setting up a new work, and, at the same time, doing this in the midst of a pandemic. -

Malta “To Dream Again” Lynn Chircopp
Austria “Man is the measure of all things” Alf Poier Austria’s entry this year at first appears mediocre, with notable Austrian music critic, Marie Herberstein describing it as “a stinker”. Closer inspection however, reveals a more complex story behind Alf Poier, a story likely to appeal to the biologically minded. The lyrical genius behind lines such as: “I like most animals on this earth, but I really prefer little rabbits and bears” and “Whoever wants to know more about animals should study Biology or inform himself on my homepage” more than makes up for the lack of melody. Perhaps criticizing the competitive nature of the entire Eurovision establishment, Poier states: “The difference between animals such as apes and primates is no bigger than between noodles and pasta” This kind of anti-establishment jibe is unlikely to win him any favours from the judges. Belgium “Sanomi” Urban Trad I like the cut of Urban Trad’s jib. They are combining traditional folk tunes with a more modern rhythm, and it works. Perhaps they are playing a very Celtic sounding tune because of Ireland’s success through Eurovision history. Perhaps Flemish folk music sounds like this too. Perhaps the greatest surprise with Urban Trad is that they have invented an “imaginary and thus universal language” for their song. With current pushes for unity in Europe, perhaps this will resound strongly with the judges. Croatia “Vise Nisam Tvoja” Claudia Beni Seventeen year-old hairdressing student, Claudia Beni will be disappointing many young European boys when she proclaims to the Latvian audience “I can’t be your lover”. -
