  • MY PASSAGES Traces the Path of Gail Sheehy's Life, I
DARING: My Passages By Gail Sheehy Discussion Questions: 1. While DARING: MY PASSAGES traces the path of Gail Sheehy’s life, it also is a fascinating insider’s account of the ways in which journalism has evolved from the 1960s to the present day. How different is the media world today from the world she describes? What changes have come about for the better? Has anything gotten worse? If you were a journalist and could pick any decade to “fall into” career-wise, which one would you choose? What stories or moments in history would you most like to cover (or have covered)? 2. As a journalist, Gail Sheehy was —and still is — fearless. “Why couldn’t a woman write about the worlds that men wrote about?” she asked herself early on and throughout her career. Do you think you would’ve had the guts to be a female reporter during a time when journalism was dominated by men? What qualities do you think she and other pioneers like Gloria Steinem possess that enabled them to court long-standing success despite the risks involved? 3. Though Sheehy enjoyed a short first marriage and a long-standing on-again, off- again relationship with visionary journalist Clay Felker that later culminated in marriage, she was a single mother and thriving career woman for much of her adult life. Throughout DARING: MY PASSAGES, she writes about her attempts to balance motherhood with a successful career. What do you make of the way she approached this struggle? How are the challenges she faced then different from those working mothers face in today’s society? If you were in Sheehy’s shoes, do you think you would have juggled career and motherhood as she did, or would you have given up one for the other? 4.

  • The Feminist Origins of the Midlife Crisis*

This is an Open Access article, distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution licence (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/./), which permits unrestricted re-use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. doi:./SX THE FEMINIST ORIGINS OF THE MIDLIFE CRISIS* SUSANNE SCHMIDT University of Cambridge ABSTRACT. This article tells the history of the midlife crisis, for the first time. Today, the idea of midlife crisis conjures up images of male indulgence and irresponsibility, but it was first successfully promoted as a feminist concept that applied to men and women equally and described the dissolution of gender roles at the onset of middle age. Although the term was coined by the psychologist Elliott Jaques in the s, it only came into general use two decades later with journalist Gail Sheehy’s bestselling Passages (), as a concept that relied on older understandings of middle age as a welcome ‘release’ from motherhood and domesticity. The feminist origins of the midlife crisis suggest, first, that journalistic publishing can be more significant for the history of an idea than spe- cialists’ theories, even if those precede it. Secondly and more importantly, it sheds new light on Susan Sontag’s classic analysis of the ‘double standard of aging’ by making visible how women used the notion of midlife change to undermine gender hierarchies. One might not have expected the history of the midlife crisis to begin with a shocking scene from a notorious massacre, still less that a woman would tell the tale.

  • Looking Toward the Future
CHAPTER 14 Looking Toward the Future Learning Objectives Read to answer these key questions: • What is my life stage? • How does positive thinking affect my future success? • What are some beliefs of successful people? • What are some secrets to achieving happiness? 457 sychologists have identified life stages that we all go through. Knowing about life stages can help you to understand where you are now and where you might be in P the future. Positive thinking is also a powerful tool for achieving life goals. Learn to use your attitudes and beliefs to enhance your future success. Many of you have happi- ness as one of your lifetime goals. This chapter ends with some useful ideas about how to achieve happiness in your life. Life Stages A number of researchers believe that adults progress through a series of orderly and pre- dictable stages in which success or failure at each stage has an influence on later stages. Understanding these stages can help you to understand where you are now and where you are headed in the future. Life stage theorists include Erik Erikson and Daniel Levinson. Gail Sheehy, author of Passages and New Passages, is a journalist who has summarized and popularized current research on life stages.1 As you read through these theories, think about how they apply to you at the present and in your future life. Erik Erikson Erik Erikson proposes that human beings progress through eight stages of psychosocial development in a fixed order.2 These stages are turning points, or crises, and the outcome of each turning point will determine future personality development.

  • The Candidates
The Candidates Family Background Bush Gore Career Highlights Bush Gore Personality and Character Bush Gore Political Communication Lab., Stanford University Family Background USA Today June 15, 2000; Page 1A Not in Their Fathers' Images Bush, Gore Apply Lessons Learned From Losses By SUSAN PAGE WASHINGTON -- George W. Bush and Al Gore share a reverence for their famous fathers, one a former president who led the Gulf War, the other a three-term Southern senator who fought for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. The presidential candidates share something else: a determination to avoid missteps that brought both fathers repudiation at the polls in their final elections. The younger Bush's insistence on relying on a trio of longtime and intensely loyal aides -- despite grumbling by GOP insiders that the group is too insular -- reflects his outrage at what he saw as disloyalty during President Bush's re-election campaign in 1992. He complained that high- powered staffers were putting their own agendas first, friends and associates say. Some of those close to the younger Gore trace his willingness to go on the attack to lessons he learned from the above-the-fray stance that his father took in 1970. Then-senator Albert Gore Sr., D-Tenn., refused to dignify what he saw as scurrilous attacks on his character with a response. The approach of Father's Day on Sunday underscores the historic nature of this campaign, as two sons of accomplished politicians face one Political Communication Lab., Stanford University another. Their contest reveals not only the candidates' personalities and priorities but also the influences of watching their famous fathers, both in victory and in defeat.

Abstract The 2016 presidential election has already made history with Hillary Rodham Clinton becoming the first woman to ever run for the presidency for either of the major political parties. However, Clinton has found her credibility and qualifications to serve as the next president questioned during the campaign. When thinking about Clinton’s qualifications, her time serving as First Lady of Arkansas is often overlooked despite the fact that this is when she began to build a name for herself, independently of her husband. This thesis examines the time that Clinton served as First Lady of Arkansas and the way in which she used her ideology, grounded in liberal feminism, to redefine the traditional and symbolic role of the First Lady at state level.

Wacker, B.A. Marquette University, 2018 The New Journalism Movement chronicled a decade of social turbulence in America by breaking the rules of traditional journalism and embracing narrative elements in the writing and publication of literary nonfiction. The magazine publishing industry was controlled by men, and the history of this transitional time in journalism has been chronicled by men, neglecting to recognize the significant contributions of women working in their midst. This study shines a light on the historical narrative that defines our understanding of the significance and key contributors to the New Journalism Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. To better understand the way social change was defined by the writing of New Journalists, a more inclusive history of those who contributed is essential. This study provides a narrative analysis of representative magazine writing by Joan Didion, Gail Sheehy, and Gloria Steinem to recognize their contributions and to illustrate how gender influenced the style, content and perspective of the New Journalism Movement.

  • Mothers, Daughters, and Domestic Spaces in 20Th Century American Film by Vibiana Bowman Cvetkovic
MP: An Online Feminist Journal February 2010 “There’s No Place Like Home:” Mothers, Daughters, and Domestic Spaces in 20th Century American Film by Vibiana Bowman Cvetkovic This paper examines two American films from the twentieth century, The Wizard of Oz (Victor Fleming, 1939) and Grey Gardens (Albert and David Maysles, 1975). Although these films represent two different genres – fantasy and cinema verité respectively – they share a common purpose which is to explore the dynamics of a mother/daughter relationship within the confines of a domestic space. In this discussion, I will examine the psychological themes that unite these films and attempt to address the question of what these films reveal about twentieth century perceptions of the mother/daughter relationship. Historically, the American film industry has been male-dominated. A survey of the productions credits for films from major motion picture studios in the twentieth century reveal distinct lack of female representation. There were, of course, exceptions and a female presence is found in the two films under discussion. The Wizard of Oz was directed by Victor Fleming and produced by Mervyn LeRoy. The writing team included a female co-writer (Florence Ryerson collaborated with Noel Langley and Edgar Allen Woolf) and the film had a female editor (Blanche Sewell). The original text is drawn from the children’s literature masterpiece, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum (1900). Grey Gardens was directed and produced by Albert and David Maysles with Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer credited as co-directors and Susan Froemke credited as co-producer. The film was edited by Froemke, Hovde, and Meyer and scripted from the narratives of Edith and “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale.
