A trend in recent years is for social studies teachers to use these graphics to enhance instruction. Cartoons have the ability to:(1) empower teachers to demonstrate excellence during lessons; (2) prepare students for standardized tests containing cartoon questions;(3) promote critical thinking as in the Bradley Commission's suggestions for developing "History's Habits of the Mind;"(4) develop students' multiple intelligences, especially those of special needs learners; and (5) build lessons that aid students to master standards of governmental or professional curriculum organizations. The article traces the historical development of the political cartoon and provides examples of some of the earliest ones; the contemporary scene is also represented. Suggestions are given for use of research and critical thinking skills in interpreting editorial cartoons. The caricature and symbolism of political cartoons also are explored. An extensive reference section provides additional information and sources for political cartoons. -

While DARING: MY PASSAGES traces the path of Gail Sheehy’s life, it also is a fascinating insider’s account of the ways in which journalism has evolved from the 1960s to the present day. How different is the media world today from the world she describes? What changes have come about for the better? Has anything gotten worse? If you were a journalist and could pick any decade to “fall into” career-wise, which one would you choose? What stories or moments in history would you most like to cover (or have covered)? 2. As a journalist, Gail Sheehy was —and still is — fearless. “Why couldn’t a woman write about the worlds that men wrote about?” she asked herself early on and throughout her career. Do you think you would’ve had the guts to be a female reporter during a time when journalism was dominated by men? What qualities do you think she and other pioneers like Gloria Steinem possess that enabled them to court long-standing success despite the risks involved? 3. Though Sheehy enjoyed a short first marriage and a long-standing on-again, off- again relationship with visionary journalist Clay Felker that later culminated in marriage, she was a single mother and thriving career woman for much of her adult life. Patterns jor Getting By: Polish Women's Employment in Delaware County, 1900-1930 S IN MUCH OF THE EASTERN UNITED STATES, the industrial working class of Pennsylvania since the mid-nineteenth cen- A tury has largely been an immigrant workforce. Understanding the work experience and household strategies of the peoples who inhabited the mill towns and industrial neighborhoods of the state necessarily involves an awareness of both the background experience in the natal country as well as the process of Americanization. By analyzing household patterns in three industrial neighborhoods of suburban Philadelphia, I have found an intersection between immi- grant status and working-class needs in the work strategies of Polish- born women in the first three decades of this century. Since the early 1970s social scientists have explored the ethnic differences among immigrant peoples in the United States. Part of this effort has been tied to an ongoing debate within the social sciences about the nature of ethnicity. Early writers often defined ethnic iden- tity as the continuation of cultural traits from the immigrant's country of origin in America.1 Their studies set up a dichotomy between the "traditions" of the home culture and pressures for assimilation in the United States. Life in the country of origin was frequently character- ized as having unchanging values regarding family roles. SUNDAY REVIEW Sylvia Chase and the Boys’ Club of TV News When we started at the networks in the early ’70s, most of us tried to hide our gender. Sylvia spoke out. By Lesley Stahl Ms. Stahl is a correspondent for “60 Minutes.” Jan. 12, 2019 Back in the early 1970s, the TV network news organizations wanted to show the world that they were “equal opportunity employers.” And so, CBS, ABC and NBC scoured the country for women and minorities. In 1971, Sylvia Chase was a reporter and radio producer in Los Angeles, and I was a local TV reporter in Boston. CBS hired her for the New York bureau; I was sent to Washington. Sylvia, who died last week at age 80, and I were CBS’s affirmative action babies, along with Connie Chung and Michele Clark. To ensure we had no illusions about our lower status, we were given the title of “reporter.” We would have to earn the position of “correspondent” that our male colleagues enjoyed. We were more like apprentices, often sent out on stories with the seniors, like Roger Mudd and Daniel Schorr. While we did reports for radio, the “grown-ups” — all men — did TV, but we were allowed to watch how they developed sources, paced their days and wrote and edited their stories. Up until then, most women in broadcast journalism were researchers. At first, the four of us in our little group were grateful just to be in the door as reporters. Things began to stir when the women at Newsweek sued over gender discrimination. -
