Title: Cobain: Montage of Heck An authorized documentary on the late musician Kurt Cobainfrom his early days in Aberdeen, Washington to his success and downfall with the grunge band Nirvana. I was hoping for this film to be great. As a Nirvana fan most people who claim to like Nirvana have no idea what 'Incesticide' or even 'Bleach' isI was looking forward to a thorough insight into this beloved figure who is still shrouded in a fog of misrepresentation and false hero worship. Unfortunately the film did not live up to expectations as it seemed the Director, "Brett Morgan" was more concerned in making the film aesthetically pleasing than emotionally interesting. First off, a few positives about the film. The way it portrays Courtney Love: She is despised by most music fans who believe she ruined Nirvana, but it's pretty clear that Kurt's self destruction was mostly his Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and his natural tendencies which add an appropriate sense of melancholy to the movie. Some of the montages were nice when not excruciatingly overdone. The music of course was good, it had a wide range from their b-sides Divetheir first album Mr. Moustache and their popular stuff Territorial Pissings Including some fascinating covers of the Velvet Underground and the Beatles. The story about Kurt and the "Retarded Girl" was absolutely fascinating. However, the pacing of the film is truly awful. The first hour trudges along after a promising start and becomes bogged down in the Director's own agenda to show off his style. By far the best scenes in the film is just raw footage of Kurt and Courtney living alone in their dingy apartments and hotel rooms. The film is appropriately titled, as the film is almost solely montages that don't progress the story and just serve again to stroke the Director's ego. There are countless films that have the same end title card and it felt awfully lazy. This is also disappointing because we experience none of the emotional damage that Cobains death has, which would have been far more interesting than 5 minutes of repetitive montages. What's sad is that this film claimed to be the definitive Cobain Doco, but it's so obvious that there is plenty more interesting video and audio recordings made by Cobain HIMSELF that were left out in order to make way for dead Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck animation montages and hyper editing. The film could have been just as emotionally effective with 20 minutes cut from it. However, I am still at least glad I saw the film, all the less wanky stuff was honestly well directed and Cobain's home video footage is nothing short of riveting and sometimes becomes really funny and beautiful. So I give this film a 6. At the end of the day, I feel it would have been far more interesting just to sort through 3 hours of Cobain's home recordings than to watch a Director trying to steal the limelight from his charismatic subjects. We see-almost from the inside-the evolution of Cobain's sensitive brilliance and the art and destruction that it fed. Sarah Larson. Morgen and his editors have simply done a remarkable job -- also an artful one -- in piecing together this residuum. Verne Gay. On the subject of the life and death of Kurt Cobain there is still some work to be done, but Montage of Heck may be as close as we'll get to moving on. Hank Stuever. A masterful and often deeply moving portrait of a volatile American genius, a portrait that goes far beyond one man, one family and one rain-sodden small town. Andrew O'Hehir. Cobain's life has been chronicled in scores of books and documentaries, but Montage of Heck feels fresh in the scope of material it includes, the way it's presented, and the things it emphasizes. Spencer Kornhaber. Montage understands Cobain as an icon, but also as the mixed-up kid who got too famous too fast, and it seems content revealing, rather than reconciling, his contradictions. Two decades on, the life and work of Kurt Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck is still being discussed, consumed and processed. Montage of Heck Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck just contribute to that conversation; it elevates it to a whole new level. Michael J. It's inherently fascinating material, but Morgen's attempt to delve deep into Cobain's life doesn't prove to be especially illuminating. Cobain's music and his striking artwork coalesce to help us understand his mind - however the rest of this documentary plays it a little too safe to take us much further. Nick Evan-Cook. The most depressing, tragic and, of course, marketable version is presented here and what we have is not good record but Sundance-friendly miserablism Helen Razer. Seeing him through the eyes of his parents was the most poignant segment in a very detailed and moving documentary about his artistically fruitful, personally painful and very short life. Asia Frey. It doesn't seems to be available in my country I live in India btw I am happy to read the interviews from Kurt Cobain's family his dad, mom, step-mom and sister , Krist, Tracy and even Courtney. I think these people too are confused about his death. They seem to try to interpret him from their own perceptions. Anyway, I'll be reading more books later. Need to read Tom Grant's book too. I've absolutely adored Kurt Cobain and his life since the literal moment I was born thanks Dad so I have no idea why it took me so long to get around to this. There are so many aspects of Kurt's life which so many people don't know about and having this compilation of his journals and art "All artists are, in a sense, writing their own biographies with their work. • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

Limited research has been conducted in the United States regarding this subject, therefore, curators have needed to develop their own methods to displaying and interpreting popular music history. Through a literature review, a review of selected exhibits, and by conducting case studies of three music museums with exhibitions of popular music, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, in Cleveland, Ohio, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in Nashville, Tennessee, the Experience Music Project Museum in Seattle, Washington, an analysis of curatorial approaches are examined.

  • A Tribut to Kurt Cobain
Michael Knobel [email protected] A Tribut to Kurt Cobain It is three years ago, since the „Godfather of Grunge“ killed himself in his luxury house in Seattle. At that time his suicide dropped many Kids into deepest sadness. But who was Kurt Cobain, the man,who couldn’t just enrich a generation with his music, but them, with his „Fuck on the world“- attitude,in there whole existence and thinking changed? Kurt Cobain was born on the 20th of February 1967 in Aberdeen, a little logger town in Washington state. Already when he was a little boy, Kurt was brought into medical treatment because of his hyperactivety. Already as a child he was pained by a chronical bronchitis. He also had a spinal curvature, with wich he had problems untill his untimely death. In spite of these pains, Kurt was a happy child, something he always tried to emphasize in the interwievs. An essential point in his life was the divorcing of his parents in 1975. Kurt was interested in music pretty early. So for example he listened to groups like The Beatles and later also to Kiss, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. When he was 12 years old, his oncle gave him a guitar. So he started to play the guitar and very soon he wrote his first songs. When he was composing he feltas if doing a job. It was probably the only job he has ever liked in his life. Kurt spent the next summer with prowling and bespattering of houses and cars of the bigwigs.

  • Bruises on the Fruit
ruises onon thethe fruitfruit B A BRIEF HISTORY OF NIRVANA & THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR MUSIC by Gary Vehar From the moment Nirvana’s landmark CD Nevermind was released, the world of rock music has never been the same. I for one will always be thankful that that album came out when it did, slightly over a week before my eighteenth birthday. I was a still-wet-behind-the-ears college freshman, away from home for the first time. Just as my life was changing drastically, so was the culture. Music, politics, fashion and art underwent an enormous change as the 90’s sloughed off the last vestiges of the 80’s. Concealed as I was in the quiet town of Ellensburg, Washington, within the tiny confines of my third-floor door room, it was the change in musical guard that first caught my attention. Friends from Seattle regularly brought over dubbed tapes to share with those of us here in college, and among one batch was an advance tape for a band called Nirvana. Nevermind was already causing excitement before its official release of September 24th, 1991. Leaving my friends for the night, I couldn’t get the songs, the sounds, out of my head. About a week later I was in yet another dorm room, listening to a brutish lout rave about the same album. Even at this early date it was obvious Nirvana was crossing all boundaries, even if the fellow who owned this copy (the real CD, this time) made fun of the over-the-top screams that so captivated me.
