A Denial the Death of Kurt Cobain the Seattle Police Department
A Denial The Death of Kurt Cobain The Seattle Police Department Substandard Investigation & The Repercussions to Justice by Bree Donovan A Capstone Submitted to The Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University, New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies Under the direction of Dr. Joseph C. Schiavo and approved by _________________________________ Capstone Director _________________________________ Program Director Camden, New Jersey, December 2014 i Abstract Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) musician, artist songwriter, and founder of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Nirvana, was dubbed, “the voice of a generation”; a moniker he wore like his faded cardigan sweater, but with more than some distain. Cobain‟s journey to the top of the Billboard charts was much more Dickensian than many of the generations of fans may realize. During his all too short life, Cobain struggled with physical illness, poverty, undiagnosed depression, a broken family, and the crippling isolation and loneliness brought on by drug addiction. Cobain may have shunned the idea of fame and fortune but like many struggling young musicians (who would become his peers) coming up in the blue collar, working class suburbs of Aberdeen and Tacoma Washington State, being on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine wasn‟t a nightmare image. Cobain, with his unkempt blond hair, polarizing blue eyes, and fragile appearance is a modern-punk-rock Jesus; a model example of the modern-day hero. The musician- a reluctant hero at best, but one who took a dark, frightening journey into another realm, to emerge stronger, clearer headed and changing the trajectory of his life. -

Aug 04, Farahdiba Khan rated it it was amazing. I have never watched Montage of Heck. It doesn't seems to be available in my country I live in India btw I am happy to read the interviews from Kurt Cobain's family his dad, mom, step-mom and sister , Krist, Tracy and even Courtney. I think these people too are confused about his death. They seem to try to interpret him from their own perceptions. Anyway, I'll be reading more books later. Need to read Tom Grant's book too. I've absolutely adored Kurt Cobain and his life since the literal moment I was born thanks Dad so I have no idea why it took me so long to get around to this. There are so many aspects of Kurt's life which so many people don't know about and having this compilation of his journals and art "All artists are, in a sense, writing their own biographies with their work. There are so many aspects of Kurt's life which so many people don't know about and having this compilation of his journals and art pieces just really summed him up as a person. May 05, Liliana rated it it was amazing. So I've watched the movie and I've read the book. -

ACCESS ALL AREAS... SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT APPEARS IN ROCK & POP 2018 Released: 1991 Album: Nevermind Label: DGC Records ABOUT THE SONG Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was attempting to write the ‘ultimate pop song’ when he came up with the guitar riff that would become ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. He WITH THE LIGHTS OUT, wanted to write a song in the style of The Pixies, telling Rolling Stone in 1994: ‘I was basically trying to rip off The Pixies. I have to admit it.’ The title came IT’S LESS DANGEROUS after Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of Bikini Kill, spray- painted ‘Kurt smells like Teen Spirit’ on his bedroom “ wall. Teen Spirit was actually a brand of deodorant. HERE WE ARE NOW, The first single from Nirvana’s second album Nevermind, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was a surprise hit. The label had anticipated that ‘Come As You Are’, the follow-up single, would be the song to cross over to a mainstream audience. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ ENTERTAIN US was first played on college radio before rock stations and MTV picked it up. It is widely praised as one of I FEEL STUPID AND CONTAGIOUS the greatest songs in the history of rock music. RECORDING AND PRODUCTION Cobain began writing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ a few weeks before Nirvana were due in the studio to record Nevermind. After presenting the main riff and melody of the chorus to the rest of the band, they jammed around the riff for an hour and a half. Bassist Krist Novoselic slowed the verse down and drummer Dave Grohl created a drum beat and as a result, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is the only song on Nevermind to give songwriting credits to all three band members. -

The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories. -
Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard. -
A WHALE of a Band!
Flipper http://www.markprindle.com/flipper.htm#dvd A WHALE of a band! special introductory paragraph! Generic Flipper Gone Fishin' Live Target Video 1980-81 DVD Blow'N Chunks Live Public Flipper Limited Live 1980-1985 Sex Bomb Baby! American Grafishy Flipper were one of the leading punk rock bands over in San Francisco in the early- to mid-80s, giving a big "frig you" to the rest of the punker scene by playing a louder SLOWER mess of the blues that relied wholly on attitude and bass line. See, the guitarist just played a bunch of scraggly noise. So the drummer would play his little rhythm and if they weren't too doped up, one of the two bass players (Will Shatter or Bruce Lose) would try to keep in time enough to play a catchy four-note bass line for you to tap your toe to. Then the OTHER of the two bassists (whichever one wasn't playing bass at the time) would yell some words that would seem nihilistic but would also occasionally make a statement about how important it is to rise above all the garbage that life throws at you and SURVIVE. They also had a great sense of humor (sample lyric: "Who cares anyway/who it is or what I say?/This song rhymes/And we play it in time!). Unfortunately drug habits have "dogged" the band since day one, resulting in one premature death and one immature reunion. Great ass band though, giving us more catchy bass lines than any band since The Tarney Spencer Group or whatever that band was that did that Run For Your Life album that my dad used to have. -
