Nirvana’s legendary frontman, Kurt Cobain, passed away on April 5, 1994. The singer was born on February 20, 1967, and to celebrate what would have been the singer’s 50th birthday, music licensing group PPL has released the band’s 20 most played songs from radio and TV. Not surprisingly, Nirvana’s iconic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” tops the list of songs, followed by “Come As You Are,” “Lithium,” “Heart-Shaped Box” and “In Bloom.” And the band’s cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World” comes in at #6. PPL’s Tim Silver said of Cobain and the band’s impact: “Kurt Cobain was one of the most visionary figures in music in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He inspired countless young people all over the world to start learning an instrument and to have the confidence to begin writing their own music,” he revealed. “On what would have been his 50th birthday, we are delighted to be able to honour him with a chart of the 20 most played Nirvana songs on radio and TV. There’re a lot of their best-known tracks in there but also one or two curveballs too,” Silver said. In addition to celebrating Cobain’s legacy, his daughter with Courtney Love, Frances Bean Cobain, paid a touching tribute to her late dad on Instagram. “Today would have been your 50th birthday. You are loved and you are missed. Thank you for giving me the gift of life. Forever your daughter, Frances Bean Cobain,” she shared in the sweet, handwritten note. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Cobain, with his unkempt blond hair, polarizing blue eyes, and fragile appearance is a modern-punk-rock Jesus; a model example of the modern-day hero. The musician- a reluctant hero at best, but one who took a dark, frightening journey into another realm, to emerge stronger, clearer headed and changing the trajectory of his life.

He WITH THE LIGHTS OUT, wanted to write a song in the style of The Pixies, telling Rolling Stone in 1994: ‘I was basically trying to rip off The Pixies. I have to admit it.’ The title came IT’S LESS DANGEROUS after Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of Bikini Kill, spray- painted ‘Kurt smells like Teen Spirit’ on his bedroom “ wall. Teen Spirit was actually a brand of deodorant. HERE WE ARE NOW, The first single from Nirvana’s second album Nevermind, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was a surprise hit. The label had anticipated that ‘Come As You Are’, the follow-up single, would be the song to cross over to a mainstream audience. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ ENTERTAIN US was first played on college radio before rock stations and MTV picked it up. It is widely praised as one of I FEEL STUPID AND CONTAGIOUS the greatest songs in the history of rock music. RECORDING AND PRODUCTION Cobain began writing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ a few weeks before Nirvana were due in the studio to record Nevermind. After presenting the main riff and melody of the chorus to the rest of the band, they jammed around the riff for an hour and a half. Bassist Krist Novoselic slowed the verse down and drummer Dave Grohl created a drum beat and as a result, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ is the only song on Nevermind to give songwriting credits to all three band members.

Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.
