Aug 04, Farahdiba Khan rated it it was amazing. I have never watched Montage of Heck. It doesn't seems to be available in my country I live in India btw I am happy to read the interviews from Kurt Cobain's family his dad, mom, step-mom and sister , Krist, Tracy and even Courtney. I think these people too are confused about his death. They seem to try to interpret him from their own perceptions. Anyway, I'll be reading more books later. Need to read Tom Grant's book too. I've absolutely adored Kurt Cobain and his life since the literal moment I was born thanks Dad so I have no idea why it took me so long to get around to this. There are so many aspects of Kurt's life which so many people don't know about and having this compilation of his journals and art "All artists are, in a sense, writing their own biographies with their work. There are so many aspects of Kurt's life which so many people don't know about and having this compilation of his journals and art pieces just really summed him up as a person. May 05, Liliana rated it it was amazing. So I've watched the movie and I've read the book. Both endings have made me cry to death and have made me think about my life. There's not a lot to say really, it's got nice pics and interview quotes that didn't make it into the film which is great considering there's some vulnerable and hurtful things in that book. Kurt Cobain had a unfair life and I've never felt so sorry for someone in my life. He had a terrible childhood, he got too much fame, and then drugs took over his whole life. The So I've watched the movie and I've read the book. The drugs took over everything which is what happens when you take something as terrible as heroin. And his story has convinced me fully to never touch a drug in my life. Kurt Cobain was a good person, he was just ultimately too sensitive for this world. If you're a fan, you'll love the movie and book. It's just hard to take in. Apr 30, Tom rated it really liked it Shelves: pacific-northwest , music. Although this book is relatively short, only pages, I learned just as much about Kurt Cobain the person as I did from reading longer, more detailed biographies about Nirvana and Kurt Cobain the rock star. Before reading this book, I'd failed to notice how well Cobain expressed himself through his art. What he concisely "said" through visual art would take countless words to express--and probably not be as truthful. Montage of Heck is a very quick read and well worth the time. She contradicted herself a lot of times and it was very disheveled to read though. I haven't seen the movie that this book accompanies yet, but I hope too! This is a collection of memorabilia, interviews, drawings and memories of Kurt Cobain lead singer of Nirvana, y'all! It creates a more well-rounded picture of the man, rather than the mythology that often surrounds public figures that die young. I found Krist Novoselic's stories particularly interesting since he was in the band from the beginning. Oct 09, Yuce rated it liked it. I chanced upon it today in the local community library here, then one thing led to another and before I knew it I was done with the book. And with the band many years ago, as a matter of fact. I could never understand what was it with the band doing a different kinda sound. It was in majority a quite lot of noise really. Neither could I like the book much. It was badly and hastily written. Feels like I wasted an entire afternoon after this book. Not even worth a single read. This is definitely a very interesting but also quite emotional read. I really like that we get all the information from people that were really close to him; so it is not written in a text but more in an interview form where his friends and family talk about him which feels quite intimate. I can really recommend this book to everyone who wants to get to know more about him, his life and his music and art. May 15, John rated it it was amazing. I have never been a big Nirvana fan but this book and the documentary are awesome. I would love to see more of Kurt's journal pages and cassette transcriptions. The interviews are really good, clear and concise. Jul 08, Steph rated it really liked it Shelves: nbhs , read This is a collection of memorabilia, interviews, drawings and memories of Kurt Cobain. I still remember the day he died, the feeling all over the world, television, schools We are lucky to have such great material he put out and see all the generations Cobain touched. A lot of things I did not know about Kurt Cobain, like his stomach battles, very informative book. May 09, David Musto rated it it was amazing. This is an absolutely essential part of the documentary. Please read my full review here. No one in the world was. I remember the look on my co-host's face. We put it on the air immediately. And my obsession with grunge music began. Just as Nirvana took elements of music we had heard before and made them sound new, filmmaker Brett Morgen deconstructs the music documentary and makes it feel new again. In fact, this is one of the best music documentaries ever made. It is not hagiography. There are also documentaries that serve the opposite purpose —to pull a Rock God from the heavens down to Earth. It is more intimate, more emotional, and more personal than either of those easy extremes. It is a true peek into the life of a private superstar. How did he become a rock icon? How did he turn his childhood pain into art? The story has been up on its site since inherited from digitalnirvana. What seems to have happened is this: a Frank Zappa-loving blog called United Mutations picked up on the Livenirvana post a couple of months ago, and reprinted it wholesale , credited — Zappa is among the many artists sampled on the tape. If Tracy Marander remembers rightly, it was actually and Kurt used a two-track recorder. It was all made in Aberdeen, I believe. It took him quite a while. The TV ones are a mix of 60s to 80s TV shows, old movies, bad movies, bits of commercials and late night infomercials. Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck movie review () | Roger Ebert Divorced from the images, the sounds on these tapes are little more than lint emptied out of the last pocket of a life. In the film, his first girlfriend Tracy Marander recalls that while Cobain was living with her, he was unemployed and would watch television for hours, strumming his guitar abstractedly. You can imagine that a few of these tracks were recorded in similar states. This hits upon the main issue with releasing Cobain's home-tapes: As King Buzzo of the Melvins noted of this film, Cobain was " a master of jerking your chain. There are brief audio clips of him playing with sped-up and slowed-down voices. No damage to the jewel case or item cover, no scuffs, scratches, cracks, or holes. The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

A Denial The Death of Kurt Cobain The Seattle Police Department Substandard Investigation & The Repercussions to Justice by Bree Donovan A Capstone Submitted to The Graduate School-Camden Rutgers, The State University, New Jersey in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies Under the direction of Dr. Joseph C. Schiavo and approved by _________________________________ Capstone Director _________________________________ Program Director Camden, New Jersey, December 2014 i Abstract Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) musician, artist songwriter, and founder of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Nirvana, was dubbed, “the voice of a generation”; a moniker he wore like his faded cardigan sweater, but with more than some distain. Cobain‟s journey to the top of the Billboard charts was much more Dickensian than many of the generations of fans may realize. During his all too short life, Cobain struggled with physical illness, poverty, undiagnosed depression, a broken family, and the crippling isolation and loneliness brought on by drug addiction. Cobain may have shunned the idea of fame and fortune but like many struggling young musicians (who would become his peers) coming up in the blue collar, working class suburbs of Aberdeen and Tacoma Washington State, being on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine wasn‟t a nightmare image. Cobain, with his unkempt blond hair, polarizing blue eyes, and fragile appearance is a modern-punk-rock Jesus; a model example of the modern-day hero. The musician- a reluctant hero at best, but one who took a dark, frightening journey into another realm, to emerge stronger, clearer headed and changing the trajectory of his life.

He WITH THE LIGHTS OUT, wanted to write a song in the style of The Pixies, telling Rolling Stone in 1994: ‘I was basically trying to rip off The Pixies. I have to admit it.’ The title came IT’S LESS DANGEROUS after Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of Bikini Kill, spray- painted ‘Kurt smells like Teen Spirit’ on his bedroom “ wall. Teen Spirit was actually a brand of deodorant. HERE WE ARE NOW, The first single from Nirvana’s second album Nevermind, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was a surprise hit. The label had anticipated that ‘Come As You Are’, the follow-up single, would be the song to cross over to a mainstream audience. ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ ENTERTAIN US was first played on college radio before rock stations and MTV picked it up. It is widely praised as one of I FEEL STUPID AND CONTAGIOUS the greatest songs in the history of rock music. RECORDING AND PRODUCTION Cobain began writing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ a few weeks before Nirvana were due in the studio to record Nevermind. After presenting the main riff and melody of the chorus to the rest of the band, they jammed around the riff for an hour and a half. • Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain
f Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Kurt Cobain (from top) N irvana By David Fricke The Seattle band led and defined the early-nineties alternative-rock uprising, unleashing a generation s pent-up energy and changing the sound and future of rock. THIS IS WHAT NIRVANA SINGER-GUITARIST KURT Cobain thought of institutional honors in rock & roll: When his band was photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone for the first time, in early 1992, he arrived wearing a white T-shirt on which he’d written, c o r p o r a t e m a g a z i n e s s t i l l s u c k in black marker. The slogan was his twist on one coined by the punk-rock label SST: “Corporate Rock Still Sucks.” The hastily arranged photo session, held by the side of a road during a manic tour of Australia, was later recalled by photogra pher Mark Seliger: “I said to Kurt, T think that’s a great shirt... but let’s shoot a couple with and without it.’ Kurt said, ‘No, I’m not going to take my shirt off.’” Rolling Stone ran his Fuck You un-retouched. ^ Cobain was also mocking his own success. At that moment, Nirvana - Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl - was rock’s biggest new rock band, propelled out of a long-simmering postpunk scene in Seattle by its incendiary second album, N everm ind, and an improbable Top Ten single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Right after New Year’s Day 1992, Nevermind - Nirvana’s first major-label release and a perfect monster of feral-punk challenge and classic-rock magne tism, issued to underground ecstacy just months before - had shoved Michael Jackson’s D angerous out of the Number One spot in B illboard.

Hello. I prepare a presentation about very famous group called Nirvana. I will tell you something about forming of the group, there music and albums. Kurt Donald Cobain was born on the twentieth February nineteen sixty-seven (20.02.1967) in a small town called Aberdeen near Seattle. Although he was a skinny and sickly child, he was hyperactive and because of that he had to take sedatives to calm him down so he wouldn't try to bite of the neighbors ear and kill some other men's cat again. The Amphetamine pills had also case some side affects: Kurt fell a sleep during lessons in school and his blood was getting worse. And when he started using other sorts of pills he got chronic bronchitis and his stomach always caused him a lot of pain. When his parents separated, his condition became worse. Kurt was seven years old and he became aggressive. He was so troublesome, that no one wanted to live with him, so his parents abandoned him. He was a teenager and live under the bridge. On account of that, Kurt never finished high school, he rather hangout with people who had the same lifestyle and with them he established his first music group, which didn't succeed. Kurt was a junky since he was on many different drugs, such as: marihuana, LSD, cocaine, mushrooms, heroin or murphy, and he drank a lot of alcohol. Kurt later established a new band called Nirvana, with Krist Novoselic on bass and Chad Chamming on drums. The first album from Nirvana was called Bleach and was not as much successful as Kurt happed to be.

Jadranka Zlomislić Osijek, 2014. Korać 2 Abstract This paper explores grunge, a music genre that developed in Seattle, Washington during the 1990s. The aim is to show how grunge contributed to changes primarily in the American society as it moved from underground to mainstream and became a primary pop cultural movement in the 90s. It also became a subculture which has its special characteristics like a certain way of dressing, behaving etc. The paper follows the evolution of grunge from its beginning in the 1980s. Thanks to Sub Pop, an independent record label, and its creators Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt and their sense for business and self-promotion, grunge moved from underground to mainstream at the beginning of the 1990s with Nirvana’s album Nevermind as a landmark and their single “Smells like Teen Spirit” as the anthem of the Generation X. Furthermore, the paper explores how musicians engaged in different aspects of society like politics, campaigning and activism and how grunge became an essential part of fashion statements and different forms of art such as movies.
