Two and half years after the release of "Teen Spirit," leader Kurt Cobain, age 27, killed himself and the Nirvana: The Complete Illustrated History was over. Jan 28, Michael Koppelman rated it really liked it. This was a fascinating and frankly depressing look into Kurt Cobain and the band Nirvana from the multifaceted view of different people. It gives a more complete picture than I've ever seen of what Nirvana was really about and the real tragedy that was Kurt Cobain. Sep 05, Michael rated it it was amazing. Loved this coffee table book. I liked this book and I liked all of the pictures included in it. The biggest problem I had with it, was that it didn't really give me new information that I didn't know about the band. Nirvana: The Complete Illustrated History I really enjoyed the photographs and pictures of tickets. That made it different from any other Nirvana or Kurt Cobain book I've ever read. I also really liked the article on what type of guitar Kurt played because I never h I liked this book and I liked all of the pictures included in it. The history of a band that had such an impact on the music industry and listeners in the 90s makes Nirvana: The Complete Illustrated History an interesting read. There are details within this book that I did not find from researching the band online.     The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge.
