The group of Fascist leaders faithful to the Duce became reorganized in Munich: they began to broadcast “Radio Monaco”, the voice of the Fascist comeback. The Ciano family also passed through Munich: Edda asked the Führer for a safe-conduct, which was not granted, to Spain, where her husband Galeazzo could have escaped the death sentence for his vote against Mussolini. It was also in Bavaria that the first “explanation” took place between Mussolini, released from Campo Imperatore, and Ciano. At this point though, the family-political drama was not reaching its epilogue. The Council of Ministers of the Italian Social Republic irrevocably condemned Ciano to death for high treason and he was executed in January 1944.

Through your detailed feedback and many informative sessions, you have pushed me to become a better writer and historian, and I will be forever grateful for that. Thank you for always embracing my love of scandalous pop culture history and making our research seminar the best part of my week. Thank you to Professor Lisa Tiersten, my academic advisor, for taking me on as a last-minute advisee and admitting me into your seminar, even though it was full. It was under your guidance that I have been able to foster my love of fashion history. I would also like to thank Professor Barbara Faedda, whose “Culture of Italian Fashion” course inspired me to write my thesis on the topic. Finally, to both the Barnard and Columbia History Departments, thank you. Every history course that I have taken during my time here has been a pleasure.

Cinecetta Studios (aka: Hollywood on the Tiber )-1937 Begins: Rome, Open City (filmed between 43-45) - Roberto Rossellin 1945 (makes Paisan 1946) Ossessione (Luchino Visconti, 1943) recognized later as first/precursor Ends: Umberto D- De Sica (1952) Most Popular Films: Ladri di biciclette (aka Bicycle Thieves) (1948) Sciuscià (aka ShoeShine) (1946) Cinema Magazine: Film Movement started by critics who worked for magazine Cinema run by Mussolini’s son Vittorio Mussolini What is Italian Neo-Realism 1) Movement is characterized by stories set amongst the poor and working class. Neorealist films generally feature children in major roles, though their roles are frequently more observational than participatory. Based on real or “composite” events. 2) Brought about in part, by end of Facism, poverty, destruction at end of WWII. 3) Semi-documentary Styles: a. Long takes, natural light, Location Shooting, Non-professional actors, Naturalistic Costumes, makeup, sets. b. Lack of Artiface c. Camera angles from normal perspectives d. Less Dominant Musical Scores 4) Dubbing of dialogue. The dubbing allowed for filmmakers to move in a more open mise-en-scene. 5) Filmed in long takes and almost exclusively on location, mostly in poor neighborhoods and in the countryside. Frequently using non-actors for secondary and sometimes primary roles. (though, in a number of cases, well known actors were cast in leading roles, playing strongly against their normal character types in front of a background populated by local people rather than extras brought in for the film).

Franz served with the U.S. Army's War Crimes Branch in Wiesbaden, Germany. Part of the team involved in war crimes investigation, Franz processed hundreds of pages of first-hand accounts by perpetrators, eye witnesses, concentration camp survivors, political prisoners, and prisoners of war that ultimately served the prosecution during the Nuremberg trials. At the war's end, he returned home to Aurora, Ohio, eventually bequeathing a collection of depositions from his wartime work to a friend, David M. Berke. The Berke Collection contains copies of approximately 300 pages of material gathered by U.S. Army investigators in preparation for the Nuremberg trials. The depositions, affidavits, and reports that comprise the collection are varied in scope, but most center on German maltreatment of prisoners -- both political prisoners and prisoners of war -- with a handful of items relating to larger issues in intelligence and counter intelligence. Gathered originally by the Office of Strategic Services, the Counter Intelligence Corps, and other Army units, the materials offer chilling insight into the brutality of the concentration camp system, "labor reform" prisons, and police prisons, and the sheer scale of wartime inhumanity.

  • A Myth and Reality in the Fascist War: the Ministry of Popular
Myth and Reality in the Fascist War: The Ministry of Popular Culture and Italian Propaganda on the Bombing of Civilians, 1938-1943 Luigi Petrella Doctor of Philosophy School of History, Classics and Archaeology 26 October 2015 a Abstract New studies that focus on the air bombardment of civilians in Italy during the Second World War regard the Italian home front as a privileged ‘observation post’ from which to study the relationship between Fascism and society during the years of the collapse of Mussolini’s regime. Yet the role of propaganda, on the specific aspect of people vulnerability to total war, in influencing that relationship, has received little attention. The main aim of this work is to reconstruct the narrative of bombing and of civilians’ life in Italy during the first phase of the war (1940-1943) as it emerges from reports, stories and works of invention in the Italian media. These have been compared with both the public reaction and the regime propaganda that had constructed some of the most powerful ideological tenets of the Italian Fascism during the 1930s, first of all the myth of air power and the creation of a ‘new man’. Investigating specific sections of the home front and situating the breakup of the Italian morale at the time of the first serious setbacks of Mussolini’s armies at the end of 1940, this research focuses in particular on the effectiveness - or otherwise - of government policies in steering the media and cultural activities that reflected life in wartime Italy.
