วารสารวิชาการ Veridian E-Journal Volume 7 Number 4 January – June 2014 ผลงานสร้างสรรค์ ฉบับ International The Memory Machine Millie Young Abstract The purpose of this paper aims to discuss the suitability of material for the animated documentary, looking specifically at texts of a biographical nature, and discussing the mechanisms employed and issues with interpreting oral narratives and memory. From the analysis, I aim to suggest guidelines to my Thai undergraduate animation students so that they may gain ideas about the suitability of material and mechanisms that may help to create an animated documentary. The paper will discuss materiality: i) in terms of animation and it’s suitability for documentary. ii) with regard to the subject material to tackle an animated documentary iii) in relation to creating a story structure from oral narratives and memories and the mechanics of construction to get an authentic truth in an animated documentary Because the nature of animated documentaries is so broad, I have, for this paper, narrowed it to the sub category: subjective autobiographical and biographical works that encapsulate personal oral narratives from memories. I will focus on traumatic memories, which retell a event from a personal perspective, which is skewed by the teller’s own perspective in order to discuss the difficulties of memory itself. This category offers many examples of works to support further analysis and investigation by the students and appears to be particularly suited to the animated form. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to discuss the suitability and materiality of the animated documentary, looking specifically at texts of a biographical nature, and discussing the mechanisms employed and issues pertaining to interpreting oral narratives and memory. -

Animation Studies – Vol.6, 2011 Hannes Rall Tradigital Mythmaking New Asian Design Ideas for Animation Introduction “Tradigital Mythmaking” might seem to be an unusual venture at first - a German animator and animation scholar working with young Asian artists to create new concepts for animation that are based on Asian mythologies and artistic traditions. An excursion into my own artistic and research background will establish the project in a wider context and explain its motivation. My own past and ongoing work has largely been defined by the search for a very personal and genuinely German style of animation. I came to Singapore in 2005 to teach animation at the new School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University. The multi-cultural society of Singapore offers a beautiful kaleidoscope of the rich traditions of the regional arts - of course, prominently Chinese art, but also Indian, Malay, Indonesian and Philippine art-styles. I found that this wonderful diversity was not yet reflected in animation. My local students seemed to look primarily elsewhere for inspiration: they were mainly influenced by manga and anime and also tended to copy the design style of the Hollywood feature animation as established by Pixar, Dreamworks and Blue Sky Studios. My initial impressions and findings were supported by scholarly research in the field. According to Engel (2009), “Very often, there is a reliance on derivative concepts in character design and storytelling. The Japanese anime-style and the American school of caricatured realism are used as templates to ensure commercial success. While the commercial prospects of such an approach are questionable, it obviously prevents full artistic success. -

Chapter 2 Literature Review
CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW The literature review provides details about the previous studies relevant to this research and the synopsis of the films Khan Kluay I and II. 2.1 Previous studies For decades, there have been many studies conducted about nationalism and racism in movies. Many of these studies focused on Walt Disney’s animations, especially his famous cartoon characters. As example, Rami Yashruti analyzed the filmic version of The Jungle Book (1967), and concluded that the racist undertones in the film are often exaggerated and overstated. King Louie’s speech “I Wanna Be Like You” has often been seen as highly racist. The jive accent of King Louie with the song and dance can be viewed as a mockery of African-American culture. The film seeks to show that they strive to be white, but they always appear like “monkeys”. Louie thinks that if he has the secret of fire, he will be human, but in truth he will always be a monkey. Another interesting point made in this study is about the voice of Baloo the Bear in The Jungle Book, who seems to represent immigrants. His characterization and New Jersey working class accent are suggestive of racist views of immigrants. Of note is that all the authority figures in the film have British noble accents, while the slang, jive, and working-class accents are reserved for vultures who speak in a working-class 7 Liverpool accents, and uneducated kingpins represented by King Louie and his monkey delinquents. At the same time, Bagheera, Col. Hardy, Shere Khan, and the wolf pack, all speak in distinguished British accents. -

The School brings industry and academia together to teach, to learn and to research the various forms of animation, producing graduates who have equal facility in practice and scholarship. It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Texas Tech University, Lubbock, for the sixth iteration of the Animation and Public Engagement Symposium, APES19. This annual forum offers an alternative view of the potential of animation beyond artistic expression, entertainment or publicity, and identifies new terrains that bridge animation with society at large. At APES, scholars and practitioners share their research and experiences in the field of animation as a therapeutic practice, an educational tool, as well as a platform for social engagement, and discuss ways of advancing and promoting interest in this area of studies. The symposium originated in the context of the groundbreaking research fostered by HEART (Healing Education Animation Research Therapy) UK, a center that investigates the processes and outcomes of animation practice in therapeutic, educational and informative ways within a variety of public contexts. By bringing together international scholars working on similar areas of interest, APES insures wider dissemination and major public impact for HEART’s work. Gathering scholars and practitioners from eleven countries and most of the US regions, the program reflects the growth and increasing global awareness of animation as a tool of and for public engagement. This is the first time that APES is being held outside of the UK and we are grateful for your presence and participation. We are confident that this symposium will yield new research connections and help forge new friendships. -
