Jack Neo is well known for his hilarious but soul- searching films such as “Money No Enough” and “I Not Stupid”. Ms Vivian Sim, Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications & PR, Genting Hong Kong, said, “We are glad to support Jack Neo and share the humour of his highest grossing blockbuster to regional audience as part of our year-long 20th anniversary celebration, to be unfolded in an array of art & culture activities in the region.” She continued, “For the past two decades, Genting Hong Kong has been creating indelible holiday experience through Star Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Resorts World Manila. A premiere screening will be organized in Taipei on 10 April at in89 Digital Cinema in Ximending before nation-wide theatrical release in Taiwan. Resorts World Manila, the Philippines’ first one-stop, nonstop vacation spot for topnotch entertainment and leisure alternatives, will stage a special screening in April at its state-of-the art cinema. Resorts World Manila will engage the Singaporean community in Manila to join this special occasion. 1 Genting Hong Kong Limited (Continued into Bermuda with limited liability – Registration No.29337) (formerly known as Star Cruises Limited) In Singapore, guests onboard SuperStar Virgo already enjoyed a 45-minute performance by Jack Neo and the cast on 8 March. In the 3D2N SuperStar Virgo cruise from Singapore to Redang island on 3-5 May, Jack Neo and the cast will jack up the fun with SuperStar Virgo guests through various “Ah Boys to Men”-themed parties, such as “In the Army” party at Galaxy of Stars learning the “Recruit Anthem” Dance Craze and also interactive games on Redang Island. For more movie fun, the vessel will screen “Money No Enough” and “Just Follow Law”, both directed by Jack Neo, at the onboard Lido Theatre. ###### In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Genting Hong Kong, is proud to bring the Singapore highest- grossing motion picture “Ah Boys to Men” to regional audience. 2 Genting Hong Kong Limited (Continued into Bermuda with limited liability – Registration No.29337) (formerly known as Star Cruises Limited) About the movie, “Ah Boys to Men” “Ah Boys to Men” is a two-part comedic story that revolves around a group of army recruits adapting, sometimes hilariously, to the way of life inside and outside National Service in Singapore. Ken, who is born into a rich family with a businessman father and a homemaker mother, has been spoilt by his mother and grandmother since young. After finishing his A Levels with subpar grades that are below the cutoff grades of the local universities, he hopes to study abroad with his girlfriend, Amy. However his plans are disrupted by his National Service, which to him, is something that is passé and a waste of his youth. Knowing how much Ken hates the National Service, his mother and grandmother try all sorts of methods, including finding the Member of Parliament (MP) for help, just to delay his enlistment. His stern father is displeased by his attitude and is constantly harping about having Ken to undergo Officer Cadet School, which worsen the poor relationship between the father and son. About the director, Jack Neo During the 1990s, Jack Neo won the local audience over with his signature comedic hosting style in variety programmes. Apart from hosting and acting then, he was the creative brain behind the longest running local and high rated variety show, “Comedy Night”. The popularity of the decade-long production is a strong testament of Jack’s remarkable talents and creativity. Following his success in television productions, Director Neo took on new challenges and ventured into the film industry in 1998 with “Money No Enough”, Singapore’s 3rd highest grossing feature film. Consequently, he scripted, directed and produced a successful string of coveted movies namely “I Not Stupid” (2002), “Homerun” (2003), “The Best Bet” (2004), romantic comedy “I Do I Do” (2005), “One More Chance” (2005), “We Not Naughty” (2012), “Ah Boys To Men” (2012) and "Ah Boys to Men 2" (2013) which is currently the highest grossing Singaporean film. • Social Construction of Singapore's Humor Industry
Intercultural Communication Studies XIX: 1 2010 Lin & Tan How Cultural and Linguistic Pluralism Shape Humor: Social Construction of Singapore’s Humor Industry Trisha T. C. Lin & Phoebe Shu Wei Tan, Nanyang Technological University This study views Singapore’s humor industry through the theoretic lenses of social construction. It aims to examine the unique characteristics of Singapore humor and investigate how Singapore’s rojak culture (Chua, 1998) and social actors (content creator, market/audience, and government/policy) have shaped the trajectory of the humor industry. Data were collected through interviews with TV comedy producers, stand-up comedians, and theatre practitioners, as well as through three-month-long observation of local comedy scenes. Thematic data analysis (Miles & Huberman, 1994) was used to analyze transcribed interviews, observational field notes, and second-hand documents. The findings show Singapore humor is characterized by over-the-top visuals, frequent use of “Singlish” and Chinese dialects, satires of current affairs, and influences from western culture. The fear of failure, mianzi (Hwang, Francesco & Kessler, 2003), is Singapore’s cultural trait that hinders the development of Singapore’s humor industry. Its humor content creation relies on a formulaic approach, in order to cater for the perceived needs of mainstream audiences. Moreover, the content censorship, which serves as a crucial means to maintain order and harmony in this multicultural and multiracial society, still restricts creativity in humor creation and partially accounts for the lackadaisical Singapore humor industry. Humor is an innately complicated social phenomenon which can be found universally in all cultures, and plays a central, necessary part in social life (Billig, 2005).

  • Aesthetics of the Pathetic: the Portrayal of the Abject in Singaporean Cinema
ACCESS: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN EDUCATION 2012, VOL. 31, NO. 2, 138–147 Aesthetics of the Pathetic: The Portrayal of the abject in Singaporean cinema Chua Beng Huata and Meisen Wongb aNational University of Singapore; bCenter for Metropolitan Studies, Berlin ABSTRACT A central figure in documentaries and commercial films in 1990s Singapore cinema is the abject figure in various guises, ranging from the urban poor to migrant sex workers from the other parts of the region. These abject figures make their living on the street and are thus fully visually exposed to every passing eye and lens. Set against the backdrop of Singapore’s triumphal national economic success story, these figures are aestheticised in visual representation, and stand as immediate disruption, critique and indictment of the long ruling government. Ironically, the same figures could just as easily be represented as ‘heroic’ figures of strength, self-reliance and individualism, qualities that are essential to Singapore’s success. Introduction to the abject The abject—literally one who is low in position, condition or status and even degraded— has enjoyed a particularly enduring status in film: as individuals living in penurious circumstances, immortalised by Charlie Chaplin’s iconic portrayal of the street urchin; as characters whose narratives are reflections or reactions to the Real by Italian neorealist cinema; as compelling alienated anti-heroes who embody non-mainstream values in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976); and, generally, in the characterisation and representation of the grotesque or the kitsch. In all these instances, the portrayal of abjectness is a reaction to impoverished conditions of reality.
