This volume takes a close look at the most popular and influential period of the great American modernist painter Marsden Hartley—his Berlin years, during which he produced his pioneering "German Officer" portraits and a series of works that occupy a unique zone between abstraction and figuration. During a brief stint in Paris, Hartley met and fell in love with a Prussian officer, and early in 1913 he followed the officer to Berlin. When war broke out the officer was called up, and was killed in action in October 1914. Mourning his loss, Hartley created an astounding series of paintings that abstracted components of the officer's uniform, retaining their military symbolism and patterns. Nearly a half-century later, this combination of bright color and composition with popular signage, informed by the coding of gay culture, was to make a strong impact on Pop artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana. In this volume, approximately 25 of the artist’s works from these years (1913–1915) reveal the impact of World War I and elucidate the artist's appropriation of military symbols and Native American motifs. Also included are an illustrated chronology and a wealth of archival material that conveys the historical moment in which these works were made.

Thompson is often celebrated by popular culture and either ignored or derided by literary critics, while this thesis reads it in relation to the picaresque literary tradition with a consideration for both the mass appeal and the disturbing qualities that make it a messy and difficult text. At times it comes across as transgressive in the way it creates sovereign space for alternative lifestyles, sometimes referred to as freaks by the narrator, Raoul Duke, but those moments are fleeting. More often, the narrator and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, are reinscribing a dominant structure that abuses the less privileged and less mobile members of society, such as a hitchhiker, a maid, and a waitress. Moreover, the narrator even ends up working against himself and counteracting what he apparently values: mobility, individual sovereignty and liberty, and his version American Dream. Through a rapidly moving and episodic narrative structure reminiscent of the picaresque tradition but with a postmodern twist that amplifies and accelerates the format to such an extreme that it paradoxically paralyzes meaningful movement in a focused direction, the novel proves both appealing and unsettling.

    Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections Northwestern University Library Evanston, Illinois Berkeley Folk Music Festival Archive, 1957-1970 MS63 Boxes 1-61; posters History or Biography: Scope and Content: The Berkeley Folk Music Festival Archive consists of some 30,000 items, including photographs of over two hundred folk artists and groups, general photographs of Berkeley Folk Music Festivals from 1957-1970, tapes, press clippings, correspondence, publicity information on various performers, and posters and flyers from most of the festivals held during this period. Included as well are some photographs and posters from other area music festivals. Provenance: All materials in the Berkeley Folk Music Festival Archive were collected by Barry Olivier, a folk artist who organized and promoted the festival for fifteen years. Mr. Olivier's essay on the history of folk music at Berkeley from 1956-1970 has been added to the collection. The archive was acquired in 1974 from John Swingle of the Alta California Bookstore. Restrictions: There are no restrictions on use of the materials in the department for research; all patrons must comply with federal copyright regulations.     tefan Geisinger was first introduced to the blues at the age of 17 after hearing Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s album "Ledbetter SHeights." After that he dug deep into the roots of blues music, Tuesday Night Blues 2021 listening to blues musicians like Lightning Hopkins, Elmore James, Howling Wolf, and Muddy Waters. Born in Rice Lake WI, Stefan All shows begin at 6:30 started his first blues band by the age of 23. After performing the blues for eight years, he created the Stefan Geisinger Band, which includes Buck Barrickman on bass and Travis Nicolai on drums. Buck Barrickman is best known for his 12 year stint as July 6: Stefan Geisinger w/ bassist for The Pumps, a favorite Midwest, rockin’ Blues Band. He The Flaming Doublewides was featured with The Pumps guitarist and drummer, Tom Brill and July 6, 2021 at Owen Park Frank Juodis, on the CD "Cover to Cover," which enjoyed national July 13: Mark Cameron Band sales. He has played at The Chippewa Valley Blues Society’s July 20: Howard ‘Guitar’ Luedtke StefanStefan GeisingerGeisinger BandBand "Tuesday Night Blues" and at the Northwest Blues Festival. He & Blue Max played with Tommy Tutones backup band for their appearance at the & Flaming Doublewides infamous Red Parrot Night Club and at the July 27: Brian Naughton & Flaming Doublewides Grand Little Theatre. Travis Nicolai grew up in Eau August 3: Sue Orfield Band Claire and began playing drums at the age of 10. He got his start August 10: Mojo Lemon playing percussion in multiple school bands throughout middle and August 17: Tommy Bentz Band high school.
