Abstract The Phil Elwood Papers offers a unique view into the San Francisco Bay Area entertainment scene. Philip "Phil" Elwood (1926-2006) was a music journalist and radio broadcaster. From 1952-1996, Elwood had a weekly jazz program on Berkeley's KPFA radio station called Jazz Archives, making him among the first to broadcast jazz on FM radio. Alongside this program, in 1965, Elwood joined the San Francisco Examiner as a critic. Elwood reviewed all manner of performances in the area, including concerts, cabaret shows, live events, and theatrical productions among others. He continued his career at the San Francisco Chronicle after the two papers merged in 2000 and retired in 2002. Following his retirement, he continued to play an active role with the San Francisco Bay Area jazz community. This collection primarily contains materials related to his work at the San Francisco Examiner with some materials related to his work at KPFA. Also included in this collection are publications and program books regarding jazz performance and its role in the San Francisco Bay area musical landscape. Preferred Citation [Folder Title], Phil Elwood Papers, Museum of Performance + Design. - Page 4 - Phil Elwood Papers 006.023 Biographical Sketch of Phil Elwood Philip "Phil" Elwood was born on March 19, 1926, in Berkeley, California. His father was a professor of agriculture at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB). As a teenager, he was introduced to jazz music by photographer Dorothea Lange which prompted his lifelong love of the genre and the building of his large jazz record collection. Elwood's love of jazz became a part of his career. From 1952-1996, Elwood had a weekly jazz program on Berkeley's KPFA radio station called Jazz Archives, making him among the first to broadcast jazz on FM radio. Alongside this program, in 1965, Elwood joined the San Francisco Examiner as a critic. He covered jazz, rock, blues, comedy, and cabaret shows, among others. He continued his career at the San Francisco Chronicle after the two papers merged in 2000 and retired in 2002. Following his retirement, he continued to write for the web site JazzWest.com. Over the course of his career, Elwood also wrote liners notes for several albums. Educated at UCB and at Stanford University, Elwood also shared his love of jazz with students as a teacher at Albany High School, Laney College and as part of the UCB Extension. Elwood was also actively involved in the jazz community, serving as Director of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation and on the advisory board for the first Monterey Jazz Festival in 1958, an annual event still active as of the publication of this finding aid. In 2002, he received the Beacon Award from the San Francisco Jazz Festival and was the subject of a tribute concert, A Salute to Phil Elwood. A lifelong Berkeley resident, Elwood passed away from heart failure on January 10, 2006. Scope and Contents The Phil Elwood Papers offers a unique view into the San Francisco Bay Area entertainment scene. Through his dual roles as a radio broadcaster for KPFA and a journalist for the San Francisco Examiner and later the San Francisco Chronicle, Elwood reviewed all manner of performances in the area, including concerts, cabaret shows, live events, theatrical productions among others. Also included are publications and program books regarding jazz performance and its role in the San Francisco Bay area musical landscape. The collection has been organized into the following series: Alphabetical Files and Working Documents; Lecture Notes, Lists, and Other Documents; Collected Publications; Photographic Materials; and Audio Materials. The Alphabetical Files and Working Documents series contains documents resulting from Elwood's work at KPFA radio for his program Jazz Archives and his works as a journalist. Materials included are articles and drafts written by Elwood, notes taken at various events he attended, correspondence, and other materials collected by and/or sent to Elwood due to his dual roles as radio broadcaster and music - Page 5 - Phil Elwood Papers 006.023 journalist. Collected materials include items such as press kits, event programs, biographical sketches, and other related documents. Materials in this series are arranged in alphabetical order by artist name, group, event, and/or genre and then in chronological order if applicable. This series comprises the bulk of this collection. The Lecture Notes, Lists, and Other Documents series includes materials related to various lectures and presentations done by Elwood, either as part of an event or part of his work as a teacher. Also included are press materials regarding the special tribute concert "Salute to Phil Elwood", where he won the Beacon Award in 2002. This series also contains address lists for various individuals affiliated with Elwood and/or organizations he participated with. Access to these lists are restricted due to the detailed level of contact information. The Collected Publications series includes magazines, newsletters, music catalogs, and other music/jazz related publications collected by Elwood either because of his affiliation with various organizations, sent to him as part of his work, or personal interest. The Photographic Materials series includes photographs collected by or sent to Phil Elwood as part of his work. The bulk of the materials are photographic prints with eight 35mm mounted slides. Majority of the images are publicity photographs of various musicians and musical groups. The Audio Materials series consists of vinyl records collected by Elwood, likely sent to him as part of his work at KPFA.     COMMON GROUND: THE SHARED INFLUENCES AND CHARACTERISTICS OF JAZZ FUSION AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK by JOSEPH BLUNK B.M.E., Illinois State University, 2014 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Colorado in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master in Jazz Performance and Pedagogy Department of Music 2020 Abstract Blunk, Joseph Michael (M.M., Jazz Performance and Pedagogy) Common Ground: The Shared Influences and Characteristics of Jazz Fusion and Progressive Rock Thesis directed by Dr. John Gunther In the late 1960s through the 1970s, two new genres of music emerged: jazz fusion and progressive rock. Though typically thought of as two distinct styles, both share common influences and stylistic characteristics. This thesis examines the emergence of both genres, identifies stylistic traits and influences, and analyzes the artistic output of eight different groups: Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’s electric ensembles, Tony Williams Lifetime, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and Soft Machine. Through qualitative listenings of each group’s musical output, comparisons between genres or groups focus on instances of one genre crossing over into the other. Big Sur is a lightly populated region of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. Although it has no specific boundaries, many definitions of the area include the 90 miles (140 km) of coastline from the Carmel River in Monterey County south to the San Carpoforo Creek in San Luis Obispo County,[1][2] and extend about 20 miles (30 km) inland to the eastern foothills of the Santa Lucias. Other sources limit the eastern border to the coastal flanks of these mountains, only 3 to 12 miles (5 to 19 km) inland. Another practical definition of the region is the segment of California State Route 1 from Carmel south to San Simeon. The northern end of Big Sur is about 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco, and the southern end is approximately 245 miles (394 km) northwest of Los Angeles. The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", or from "el país grande del sur", "the big country of the south". This name refers to its location south of the city of Monterey.[3] The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the contiguous 48 states, ascending nearly a mile (5,155 feet/1571 m) above sea level, only 3 miles (5 km) from the ocean.[4] The name Big Sur can also specifically refer to any of the small settlements in the region, including Posts, Lucia and Gorda; mail sent to most areas within the region must be addressed "Big Sur".[5] It also holds thousands of marathons each year.

LOSS LEADERS SERIES (1969-1980) Depending On How You Count Them, 34 Essential Various Artist Collections From Another Time We figured it was about time to pull together all of the incredible Warner Bros. Loss Leaders releases dating back to 1969 (and even a little earlier). For those who lived through the era, Warner Bros. Records was winning the sales of an entire generation by signing and supporting some of music’s most uniquely groundbreaking recording artists… during music’s most uniquely groundbreak- ing time. With an appealingly irreverent style (“targeted youth marketing,” it would be called today), WB was making lifelong fans of the kids who entered into the label’s vast catalog of art- ists via the Loss Leaders series—advertised on inner sleeves & brochures, and offering generous selections priced at $1 per LP, $2 for doubles and $3 for their sole 3-LP release, Looney Tunes And Merrie Melodies. And that was including postage. Yes… those were the days, but back then there were very few ways, outside of cut-out bins or a five-finger discount, to score bulk music as cheaply. Warners unashamedly admitted that their inten- tions were to sell more records, by introducing listeners to music they weren’t hearing on their radios, or finding in many of their (still weakly distributed) record stores. And it seemed to work… because the series continued until 1980, and the program issued approximately 34 titles, by our questionable count (detailed in later posts). But, the oldsters among us all fondly remember the multi-paged, gatefold sleeves and inviting artwork/packaging that beckoned from the inner sleeves of our favorite albums, not to mention the assorted rarities, b-sides and oddities that dotted many of the releases.

Rollins switched to tenor saxophone, and was mentored by pianist Thelonious Monk. Upon graduating from high school, Rollins made his first recordings with Babs Gonzales, J.J. Johnson, Bud Powell, and Fats Navarro. He went on to record with such jazz legends as Miles Davis, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. In 1954, Rollins’ compositions “Oleo,” “Airegin,” and “Doxy” were featured on Miles Davis’ Bags' Groove.
