For Immediate Release August 12, 2021 For Immediate Release August 12, 2021 Contact: April Buzby, Programs & Marketing Manager p: 360-993-5679 | [email protected] CCHM Speaker Series and Can Release Sky River Festival 1970 ***Rescheduled to new date*** Vancouver, WA – Clark County Historical Museum (CCHM) and 54-40 Brewing are pleased to announce a can release event to commemorate the 51th anniversary of the Sky River Rock Festival III at CCHM’s Speaker Series presentation on Thursday, September 9, with “Sky River Festival 1970.” This free event will occur at 54°40′ Brewing in Washougal (3801 S Truman St #1, Washougal, WA 98671) and begin at 7 p.m. In this presentation and can release, CCHM executive director, Brad Richardson, will reflect on the history of the Sky River Festival – from local resistance to the festival, to how it illustrates generational and regional divides in Washington State in the twilight years of the hippie era. “Sky River III was one of the longest in duration and heaviest attended of the Northwest music festivals of this era. It drew artists and attendees from around the world. Like it’s East Coast sister festival, Woodstock, Sky River was a chance for people from all walks of life to gather peacefully and participate in the free flowing exchange of ideas on everything from the Vietnam War and gender beliefs to women’s rights and Black power.” According to Richardson, “We’re excited to partner with 54°40′ Brewing to explore this moment in our community’s history.” The Clark County Historical Museum’s Speaker Series is a monthly exploration of Clark County history with industry experts, community members, and local artists. For our 2021 Season, the Speaker Series central theme is “The Stories that Shape Our Community: Past, Present, Future.” We’ll explore the stories, struggles, and triumphs of the various people that call Clark County home. A portion of the proceeds from can sales will go to Two Rivers Museum. The CCHM Speaker Series is sponsored by the Clark County Historic Preservation Commission and Wager Audio. This month’s program is presented by 54°40′ Brewing. This is a free, in-person event to be held at 54°40′ Brewing in Washougal, WA. For those unable to attend the in-person event, CCHM will be streaming the continuation of “PRIDE: Conversations with Clark county’s LGBTQIA+ Community” with Vancouver USA Pride president, Micheil MacCutcheon, on YouTube. More information to follow. For more information, contact the museum at 360-993-5679 or [email protected]. ### CCHM | 1511 Main St, Vancouver, WA 98660 | 360-993-5679 | [email protected] | www.cchmuseum.org .

Foreword by Udo Kittelmann. Text by Ilene Susan Fort, Thomas W. Gaehtgens, Kaitlyn Hogue Mellini, Alexia Pooth, Bruce Robertson, Thomas Weissbrich, Cornelia Wieg. This volume takes a close look at the most popular and influential period of the great American modernist painter Marsden Hartley—his Berlin years, during which he produced his pioneering "German Officer" portraits and a series of works that occupy a unique zone between abstraction and figuration. During a brief stint in Paris, Hartley met and fell in love with a Prussian officer, and early in 1913 he followed the officer to Berlin. When war broke out the officer was called up, and was killed in action in October 1914. Mourning his loss, Hartley created an astounding series of paintings that abstracted components of the officer's uniform, retaining their military symbolism and patterns. Nearly a half-century later, this combination of bright color and composition with popular signage, informed by the coding of gay culture, was to make a strong impact on Pop artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana. In this volume, approximately 25 of the artist’s works from these years (1913–1915) reveal the impact of World War I and elucidate the artist's appropriation of military symbols and Native American motifs. Also included are an illustrated chronology and a wealth of archival material that conveys the historical moment in which these works were made.

  • A Postmodern Picaresque: the Limits of the Sovereign Self in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
TITLE PAGE A Postmodern Picaresque: The Limits of the Sovereign Self in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Clayton Chiarelott A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Bill Albertini, Advisor Phil Dickinson ii ABSTRACT Bill Albertini, Advisor The novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream by Hunter S. Thompson is often celebrated by popular culture and either ignored or derided by literary critics, while this thesis reads it in relation to the picaresque literary tradition with a consideration for both the mass appeal and the disturbing qualities that make it a messy and difficult text. At times it comes across as transgressive in the way it creates sovereign space for alternative lifestyles, sometimes referred to as freaks by the narrator, Raoul Duke, but those moments are fleeting. More often, the narrator and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, are reinscribing a dominant structure that abuses the less privileged and less mobile members of society, such as a hitchhiker, a maid, and a waitress. Moreover, the narrator even ends up working against himself and counteracting what he apparently values: mobility, individual sovereignty and liberty, and his version American Dream. Through a rapidly moving and episodic narrative structure reminiscent of the picaresque tradition but with a postmodern twist that amplifies and accelerates the format to such an extreme that it paradoxically paralyzes meaningful movement in a focused direction, the novel proves both appealing and unsettling.

Endless Connections: New Zealand secular intentional rural communities founded in the 1970s A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History at Massey University by Robert Jenkin 22/08/2012 1 We are the music makers, And we are the dreamers of dreams, Wandering by lone sea-breakers, And sitting by desolate streams; World-losers and world-forsakers, On whom the pale moon gleams: Yet we are the movers and shakers Of the world for ever, it seems. Arthur O'Shaughnessy, 1874 2 Acknowledgements First I thank my supervisor, Dr Kerry Taylor, who encouraged me to begin this thesis and has helped me complete it, a longer process than either of us originally expected. Throughout he has encouraged and given sound advice. I am also grateful to Dr Geoff Watson, my Post Graduate Co-ordinator for his advice and support. My partner Anne, a committed member of Rainbow Valley Community for more than thirty years, helped in many ways, and came with me on some parts of my research journey, acting as a photographer at interviews. I also thank my father Ian, whose love of people and their stories distinctively shaped the way I see the world. I have been greatly helped by Olive Jones, who last year finished a PhD thesis on New Zealand communities. We shared ideas over a twelve-month period, during which time she generously let me have copies of hard-to-find but highly relevant material. Lyman Sargent in his turn supplied me with a recently updated digital version of New Zealand Intentional Communities: A Research Guide, 1 and Lucy Sargisson provided me with some of her related articles.
