PROLOGUE He‟d hardly slept a wink. His demons kept him awake. He tossed and turned as his wife snored softly beside him and their youngest child slept peacefully in her cot at the foot of their bed. In the distance the early morning trains had started running. The world was making plans to wake up as he struggled to sleep. His head felt swollen from the fears, the worries and the thoughts that vied for attention inside it. The back of his neck was sore, itchy or just a combination of uneasiness. They were signposts to his nemesis - stress. This could lead to a stroke, the family doctor had warned over and over again. “Avoid these at all costs,” the soft-spoken GP genius had said, looking each time like he‟d never himself had a personal brush with insomnia other than what he learned at medical school. The man was a picture of good health, everything the sleepless sod tossing and turning in bed now looked like he‟d never be. At some point he cried out like someone waking up from a bad dream. Only he wasn‟t dreaming because sleep continued to elude him. He was wide awake: “God help me.” But even the Almighty, it seemed, was catching up on His own forty winks at the time. Except for the staccato breathing of the two souls in the bedroom with him, and the rail commotion on the other side, everything was all quiet. Any given cemetery would have been nosier at the time. Even his two dogs, after a night on the prowl in the yard, were getting ready to knock off and catch up on some snooze after concluding their nocturnal obligations.

Nelson Mandela became president of a democratic South Africa in 1994 when the country teetered on the brink of a racial bloodbath and the populace were mired in anxiety. His gigantic presence still dominates the South African scene, where South Africans - and billions around the world - wait with bated breath, praying for a miracle that the elder statesman would be with us a while longer. South Africans will be eternally grateful for this visionary figure, with his ideal of a “rainbow nation”, where everyone has a rightful place to work, live and be proud citizens, without fear or prejudice. • Barry Hilton Brings the Laughs to Gold Reef City Comedy Aficionados
Barry Hilton Brings The Laughs to Gold Reef City Comedy aficionados are in for two nights of pure comedy gold as Barry Hilton takes to the stage with his new show, Evolver, live at The Lyric, Gold Reef City on Friday, 27 and Saturday, 28 January 2017. His ability to reduce an audience to tears of laughter, his uncanny ability to gauge a crowd, his firm stance on working clean, and his unflinching work ethic make Barry Hilton an institution that has stood the test of time. After 30 years of touring, six children, two ex-wives, a new wife, six DVDs, two movies, Vegas, Cleese, Connolly, Monkhouse, millions of air miles and a Lifetime Achiever statue on his mantelpiece, Hilton is undoubtedly the quintessential South African comedy giant. Evolver sees Hilton at his vibrant best showcasing brand new material - evidence of his unique ability to adapt, reinvent and evolve with the times. He continues to impress, having performed on five of the seven continents, and performs regularly in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and of course, across Africa – with some of these countries expecting a visit from the comedian as soon as February. He also has a seven city tour of Canada lined up for May, after which he will be performing in Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi in June, before heading to the UK in July. “Gold Reef City loves hosting Barry Hilton,” says Gold Reef City Marketing Manager, Gareth Kaschula. “Fans can brace themselves for hilarious comedy in true Hilton style with his ultra-funny, slick new production, Evolver.
