Š The eruption of Mount Merapi since 26th of October 2010 has given the impact to the air traffic both domestic and international flight who fly across the island. The impact are Ranging from the rescheduling of the flight to cancelled the flight due to the clouds. Š This paper highlights the collaboration efforts between thhhe DGCA,the ANSP, MET O ffdhffice and the Military to implement the contingency routes to facilitates the traffic fly across the Java island.

ƒ Indonesia has around 75 active volcanoes spreadout from Aceh to Papua. One of them is Mount Merapi who located at the center of Java island within Jogjakarta province with Lat/long S07. 32. 03 E110.26.03. the location is on the crossing point of the most of the ATS Routes and also close with the FIR Boundary between Jakarta FIR and Makasar FIR. Due to the location, the eruption of Merapi will give impact to the air traffic who fly across the area from West to East v.v (Domestic) and North to South v.v (International). ƒ In 26th of October 2010, the Merapi has exploded, and thrown up the volcanic ash material to the air. The aviation code of mount Merapi is Red. ƒ The meeting should also note that Indonesia implementing the ATS Contingency Plan since it is established in 2007. The ongoing situation also shines positive light to the effort of collaboration by DGCA, ANSP, MET Office and the Military to facilitate the safe, efficient and orderly flow of air traffic within the area affected by the Volcanic Ash.

ƒ Since the first eruption on 26th of November 2010, Indonesia gathering Information from the Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (MGA) and the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) according to the volcanic ash plume obibservation and the forecast. Thereference that: Š a. The Indonesia ATS Contingency Plan, Page 9. Para 2.40, Meteorological Services (MET), that Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (MGA) (that should ensure regular provision of the aerodrome observation, Terminal forecast, SIGMET and the Meteorological information for the ATS Unit in order to comply with the ICAO requirements on aeronautical meteorology). b. the Volcanic Ash Advisory published by Darwin VAAC together with the Papua New Guinea and part of the Philippines.

ƒ In order to facilitate the air traffic who fly accross the area, the Indonesia DGCA collaboratede with ANSP, MET Office and the Military to facili tate the saf e, effi ci ent and ord erly l flow of air traffic within the area affected by the Volcanic Ash. There were two group of the ATS contingency routes namely Northern routes and the Southern routes as published by NOTAMR A1452/10. Š a.Northern Routes will be effected when the wind blows to bring the VA to the West and South West.

b.Southern Routes will be effected when the wind blows to bring the VA to the North and North West. The DGCA and the Military have been work close together in order to faciliate the traffic accross the Military Area.

à They were more than 400 flight schedule have been cancelled due the closed of the Jogjakarta Airport from 7 – 20 Nov 2010; à 65 flight have been cancelled from 1-6 Nov 2010 due to the Volcanic ash information. à Thousands pax unable to travel. à Air lines revenue loss, Longer routes and more time needed as well as more fuel consumption.

Š Once the VA Advisoryyp Center publish the VA Plume and the forecast, it is covered the very wide area and will impact almost of the major routes. Š Some airlines directly use this information as reference and for the Long Haul flight, using the VA forecast that effect to the wide area, because of their flying time. Š To elliminate those impact, the DGCA of Indonesia doing the effort by publishing the real time observation and requesting the Pilot Report when visual contact with the VA on their routes.

Š Learn from the Icel andi c mount ai n erupti on, It is necessary to the state and the VAAC to include information concerning the contamination level of the volcanic ash in order to minimize the wide coverage area of VA that will impact to the Civil Aviation.
