Here at Kimberworth Park Walking for Pleasure we are beginning to wonder what has happened to the four seasons as Winter continued to invade Spring. The daffodils colourfully herald the dawn of the new season, but until recently the cold weather has refused to take note, impudently covering up the yellow with its own wintery white in a final attempt to make its mark. The effect has been made all the more noticeable by the early arrival of Easter, and the fact that the Easter Bunny only just escaped the grip of the Beast from the East.

As a walking group, we have had the good fortune of a remarkably good run of weather on Wednesday mornings over a number of years. This year has been harder, but it does provide an opportunity to see the landscape in its seasonal flux and appreciate its sheer natural beauty. Farmers somehow manage to cultivate crops in fields of clay which can rotate between boggy quagmire and the consistency of concrete in a very short space of time. Now that we are emerging from the coldest weather, our walkers are seeing how nature has the resilience to bounce back and revive itself.

If you would like to join the group we meet at St John’s Church at St John’s Green every Wednesday morning, the group completes local walks of between 3 to 4 miles. Every 4 weeks, using members’ cars, we venture further afield

Friends of Greasbrough Park

Seating in Greasbrough Park has been on the agenda many times, but the problem of vandalism dictated that any seating had to be metal.

Working alongside Rotherham Green Spaces officer Donna , Greasbrough Park has now been provided additional seating.

Originally from Thrybergh, the seating was no longer in use, but required some TLC and painting to bring it back into use.

Donna arranged for the seating to be delivered to Greasbrough Park and was stored behind the pavillion.

Group member Dave Mee worked his magic with soapy water before painting the seating until they looked as good as new. Fitzwilliam Square Association

Friends of Greasbrough Park Greasbrough Community History Society Linking the Past to the Present Hello everybody

Here we go with edition number 7 of the of The Hub. This edition marks the first birthday of The Hub. We are one year old. Time flies when you’re having fun.

The HUB is proving to be a much needed, very welcome and popular publication within the local commu- nity. The circulation and readership of The Hub is increasing with each publication and as such it may be worth local businesses considering submitting an article or an ad about their business.

The Hub is made up of contributions submitted by our local community groups and organisations. The aim of The Hub is to provide a platform for our local community groups and organisations to keep you, the public, “in the loop” and up to date with what is happening in the vibrant Greasbrough and Wingfield areas.

All the contributions are skilfully edited by Scott Foster of Wingfield Academy to make a super, local and free publication. What could be better? Thank you to Scott Foster of Wingfield Academy.

Greasbrough Library Good news for Greasbrough Library is that it is to be refurbished at a cost of several thousand pounds. To my knowledge the building, which has been operating since 1974, (see photos of opening ceremony below) has not had too many refurbishments during this time so this latest news will be most welcome.

Mayor Bill Skelton and Mayoress Joan Johnston in 1974

The Library is used extensively by many local groups as a meeting place and statutory organisations that provide a service such South Police, The British Legion, R.M.B.C. Housing and Councillor’s sur- geries where problems and concerns can be discussed in private. As such Greasbrough Library provides a much used and valuable resource and central hub for local people in Greasbrough and surrounding area.

The plans will include new carpets, a fresh lick of paint, the repositioning of the reception desk and will incorporate a private office for the public to discuss any concerns in private with various organisations. The computer area will be retained but moved slightly. The kiddies area and the meeting room with remain much the same and the existing staff back office will be modified to utilise and make better use of space for RMBC services staff to do their admin work. The computer area will be retained but moved slightly. The kiddies area and the meeting room with remain much the same and the existing staff back office will be modified to utilise and make better use of space for RMBC services staff to do their admin work.

This will be very good news for the Library and will go a long way to re assuring the public that Greasbrough Library is here to stay to provide vital services to the local community.

The bad news is that this work will take two weeks to complete and during this time the Library will be closed while refurbishments are completed. The Library will be closed from Monday 14th May and will reopen on Monday 28th May.

The plans reproduced below provide a Before and After view of the proposed work to be carried out.

The problem of pot holes and flooding on the access road to the Library and Coop is being addressed. Apparently the roots of the two large willow trees in front of the Library have over grown into the manhole and have caused damage to the drainage system. Repairs to the drains are to be carried out and then the access road can be resurfaced properly. This work is expected to take about five weeks. G.P.H.C.T. members recently met to discuss the re- siting of the Greasbrough Town Hall facade stone work following the recent demolition

L to R: Councillor Robert Elliott, Delyse Sanderson, Keith Hobson, Scott Foster, Dave Goodall, Lawrence Antcliffe, Graham Hobson (seated), John Byers, Councillor John Williams, Councillor Sarah Allen, David Mee, Maureen Taylor, Susan Byers

G.P.H.C.T. have had plans and provisional costings drawn up by Mr Peter Sanderson, our heartfelt thanks to Peter, and these have been handed over to Mr Stuart Carr, Corporate Facilities Manager from R.M.B.C., to submit to R.M.B.C. for preliminary consideration.

Greasbrough Community History Society

We meet regularly on the 1st and 3rd Thursday in the month at Greasbrough Public Library.

General meeting dates for 2018 5.00.pm to 7.00.pm May 17th , June 21st , July 19th , August 16th , September 20th , We are trying to get the original plan updated to incorporate the arch way so the finished re-siting will October 18th , November 15th , December 20th consist of the 1925 stone work and the arch way to look something like the above picture. At this time we are not sure if this will be feasible or not. It may be that the additional cost this will incur will be pro- Drop in Meeting dates for 2018 hibitive or it may be that it would be unsafe to rebuild such a structure with stone that is so old. 5.00.pm to 7.00.pm

May 3rd , June 7th , July 5th , August 2nd , September 6th , October 4th November 1st 2.30. pm to 4.30.pm , December 6th 2.30.pm to 4.30.pm It was decided not to try and re-site on the proposed roundabout or new junction for two main reasons:

 It was thought by R.M.B.C. and Highways planning that re-siting on the roundabout or junction would raise issues around safety and driver visibility / blind spots and as such planning permission would most likely be refused.

 Because of the many and varied processes such as funding, planning, consultation, final planning approval that are required, the length of time before the new road junction / roundabout building begins is expected to be in the region of three to four years. All parties are of the opinion that this long time frame would have a detrimental effect on the re-siting project. And the general public and all parties involved in the project may well lose interest and or funding would either dry up or be withdrawn.

Stuart Carr reported to the meeting that R.M.B.C. are impressed with our plans and the re - siting of the facade stone work was discussed in detail by G. P. H. C. T. members and several possible re-siting points were identified. After much discussion the favourite location for re-siting the facade stonework, which will be sub- ject to a successful planning application, is opposite the library at the bottom of Croft Street.

There are a few loose ends to tie up before G. P. H. C. T. make a formal planning application to R.M.B.C.. Watch this space for further updates

Rotherham Fostering

We urgently need new foster carers to look after our local children in Rotherham. We now have more than 600 children in our care, and that number is still rising.

By becoming a Rotherham foster carer you will be part of a community that is helping to reduce the numbers of Rotherham children who need to move to live with foster families in other towns and cities, sometime hundreds of miles away. If you can offer a caring, loving home we will offer you competitive rates and an expert support and training package.

Carers must be over 21 and have a spare bedroom, everything else is a conversation. Whether you’ve only just started to consider fostering or you’re ready to get started we’d love to discuss all the options with you. To find out more, meet local carers and the council team then please join us at one of our drop-in sessions held throughout the year – details on our website www.rotherham.gov.uk/fostering

You can call to speak to one of our friendly team members on 01709 823976 Monday to Friday or message us through Facebook or Twitter.

The building improvements will assist the Council in transforming the Library into a “neighbourhood hub” creating a one-stop-shop environment for members of the community.

What are the changes?

Specific improvements to the Library and Neighbourhood Hub include:

Greasbrough Youth FC

Greasbrough Youth FC are based on Roughwood Road fields Wingfield. We recently gained a 25 year lease to help secure funding to develop the fields. We have 240 players from U7 to adults including girls football. Next season we have 3 new teams starting U7/U10 girls and a new U18 side which will be working in partnership with Parkgate FC . We are also looking for new players for our U7 and U10 Girls teams.

For further information please visit out website http://www.mypartnerclub.co.uk/greasbrough-youth-fc Latest news from your Councillors

We are pleased to report that three projects into which we have put a lot of time and effort are now coming to fruition.. These projects were identified as being important to our Ward when we were elected two years ago and so we are particularly pleased to be able to report a successful conclusion

Fenton Road

The first and possibly the most important is the installation of a controlled pedestrian crossing situated at the junction of Roughwood Road and Fenton Road. This facility will not only give a safe crossing for school pupils and residents of Munsbrough, but will also give an access to the Co-op as a new footway will be added from the Munsbrough side of the crossing to the Co-op and the estate adjacent to it. An extended 30 mph restriction to Fenton Road will also be included to enhance the safety aspect of the scheme. The project is in the design stage and hopefully will be implemented by the end of this year.

Greasbrough Library

Greasbrough Library is at this moment being refurbished and we see this as important step forward in our ambition to create a Community Campus in that locality. We have other plans and ideas and will share them with you as we develop them. A detailed report on the works in the library are included elsewhere in this edition.

The Garden Hut

The Garden hut on Byrley Road is also at the moment being refurbished and this will give a new home to the Kimberworth Park TARA in readiness for when their present location is demolished as part of the plans for St Johns Green. This refurbishment includes a new kitchen and a dining area plus a shop floor for their comprehensive range of clothing and other goods that they have for sale.

The project is due for completion by the end of this month and we hope that everyone will support this new location.

Crime and ASB

We have also taken on board the concerns of residents about ASB, to this end we have had walkabouts with the Police in known hot spots and continue to liase with them through regular meetings at Riverside and also at their weekly drop in sessions every Thursday in Greasbrough library, which are provided to give residents a chance to speak to the Officers who work in our locality if any of you have any concerns you want to raise. The session runs from 10 o clock for one hour.

Speed Awareness

We have had a speed awareness session at Rockingham school when the Police attended with speed guns and together with pupils patrolled a section of Roughwood road outside of school resulting in a number of motorists being stopped for exceeding the limit. The pupils then issued “tickets” that they had Latest news from your Councillors designed and made in school. This session was arranged in response to residents concerns about speeding cars in that locality

Greasbrough Primary- Ofsted Success

Hot off the press is the news that the Ofsted inspection report for Greasbrough school has just been released.

The school was last inspected in 2014 when it was rated good. Since then the report notes that the school has maintained its high standards in education, with pupils responding well to teaching and reaching high grades in reading, writing and mathematics. Pupils with special educational needs/ disability are also making strong progress as they are well supported by staff.

The conclusion of the inspection is that the school is again rated good and is moving towards outstanding.

This is brilliant news and our congratulations go to the Executive Head Mrs Fearnley , Head of school Mrs Cook and all of the staff.
