    The Rifle Club Movement and Australian Defence 1860-1941 Andrew Kilsby A thesis in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences February 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the rifle club movement and its relationship with Australian defence to 1941. It looks at the origins and evolution of the rifle clubs and associations within the context of defence developments. It analyses their leadership, structure, levels of Government and Defence support, motivations and activities, focusing on the peak bodies. The primary question addressed is: why the rifle club movement, despite its strong association with military rifle shooting, failed to realise its potential as an active military reserve, leading it to be by-passed by the military as an effective force in two world wars? In the 19th century, what became known as the rifle club movement evolved alongside defence developments in the Australian colonies. Rifle associations were formed to support the Volunteers and later Militia forces, with the first ‘national’ rifle association formed in 1888. Defence authorities came to see rifle clubs, especially the popular civilian rifle clubs, as a cheap defence asset, and demanded more control in return for ammunition grants, free rail travel and use of rifle ranges. At the same time, civilian rifle clubs grew in influence within their associations and their members resisted military control. An essential contradiction developed. The military wanted rifle clubs to conduct shooting ‘under service conditions’, which included drill; the rifle clubs preferred their traditional target shooting for money prizes.

    GRADUATES OF NACHES VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL Class of 1917 - 1924 Naches, Yakima County, Washington Class of 1917 (First Graduating Class) Willard McKinley Sedge (15 February 1897 - 22 August 1972) Born and raised in Naches, after graduation he attended Washington State College. When he returned he married Marjorie A. Knickrehn (Lower Naches Class of 1919) on November 13, 1925. Willard was the youngest child of Henry and Sarah Elnore (Plumley) Sedge. He had six siblings, four sisters and two brothers. He and Marjorie had no children. Willard owned and operated a fruit ranch in Naches until the time of his death. Class of 1918 Harry Andrew Brown (10 May 1900 - 28 February 1998) Born in Genesee County, New York to Seth and Anna (Troseth) Brown, after graduation Harry attended Washington State College. He was the third son in a family of four boys and two girls. He and his family moved to Naches between 1905 and 1910. Harry married Elizabeth Ann McInnis on September 2, 1938. After her death in 1956 he met and married Lolita J. Lapp Saar on March 10, 1960. Marion Lewis Clark (15 November 1898 - 13 April 1979) Born and raised in Naches, Marion was the youngest son of William Samuel Clark and Elizabeth Ann Kincaid. He continued his education at Washington State College. Marion married Alice Frances Selde on June 5, 1927 in Lincoln County, Washington and together they built and developed an orchard home in the Naches Valley. Jean C. Merriam, Director of the Census, says : "Contrary to the general impression these great combinations do not control a very large part of the in dustrial output of the country." The general statement is more specifically denned : "The output of these combinations, although it seems enormous, does not represent much more than one-tenth of the total industrial product of the United States." This tendency to minimize the "danger" of the trusts is quite characteristic of the bourgeois statesman, who is always looking out for popular sympathy and appreciation, and will necessarily represent the trusts as a "danger" and menace, ogle and octopus and what not. Mr. Merriam does it very eloquently in the article quoted. Many leaders of the bourgeois thought undoubtedly feel the constructive power of trusts, but only the boldest ones dare acknowledge it openly, for to them this constructive power means something entirely different from the socialistic conception — means only higher profits, higher personal gain, which it is wise policy to hide. Be it as it may, we are here to criticize Mr. Merriam's state ments, and not his socio-economic philosophy. A priori it would seem that that Mr. Merriam's data are above all suspicions, for he is at the head of the greatest statistical organization in the country, and this organization has made a special study of the American trusts, which study had been the basis of Mr.
