The Arabs susgested that segments passed with the faeces were a separate species of parasite from tapeworms: they called these segments the cucuribitini, after their similarity to cucumber seeds. Sexually mature tapeworms live in the intestine or its diverticula ( rarely in the coelum) of all classes of vertebrates. These are a group of parasites which are fairly common in both domestic animals and wild animals, and humans. CLASS CESTODA This class differs from the Trematoda in having a tape-like body with no body cavity and alimentarty canal. There is a wide variation in length, ranging from a few milimeters to several meters. The body is segmented, each segment containing one and sometimes two sets of male and female reproductive organs. Almost all the tapeworms of veterinary importance are in the order Cyclophylidea, two exceptions being in the order Pseudophyllidea. In the Mizo traditional medicine of India and Myanmar, the rhizomes and roots are used as a remedy for bacterial, fungal and intestinal helminth infections. Methods: An extract of the whole underground parts was prepared in Soxhlet apparatus using chloroform as a solvent. After concentrating in a vacuum rotary evaporator, the extract was analysed using gas chromatography- mass spectrometry. Anthelmintic activity was tested in vitro against the tapeworm Raillietina tetragona and the roundworm Ascaridia galli. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the structural changes on the helminths after treatment with the plant extract. Results: Twenty-two compounds were identified from the plant extract out of which fatty acids were the predominant compounds. Palmitic acid was the most abundant. Bioactive phytosterols such as campesterol and stigmasterol were also detected. The plant extract was significantly effective on both the helminths and showed dose-dependent anthelmintic activity as that of albendazole. The tapeworm treated with the plant extract showed deformities on the suckers, clumping of the spines, tegumental folds and erosion of microtriches. Extensive damage was also seen on the roundworm including cuticular shrinkage, collapse of the lips, and formation of warty surface throughout the body.

ABSTRACT he fine structure of the tegument of N. kashmirensis (Nematotaeniidae: TCyclophyllidea) mature proglottids consists of distal cytoplasm connected with underlying perikarya by cytoplasmic bridges. The distal cytoplasm lies on the basal lamina below which there are two layers of smooth muscles, circular and longitudinal bundles. The distal cytoplasm contains mitochodria, electron dense bodies and vesicles of variable size, shape and density. The tegument bears three types of microtriches, namely: filiform, spiniform and digitiform. They have multiple functions, such as amplification of the surface area for digestion and absorption, excretion, movement, attachment to the intestinal mucosa of their hosts and external protection. Type and distribution of microtriches are considered to be of systematic and phylogenetic importance. The fine structure of the excretory system consists of numerous flame cells each bears a bunch of 54 cilia, which are anchored in the cytoplasm by means of basal bodies possessing striated rootlets. All cilia in the flame cell are aligned in the same direction. The flame and duct cells are connected by interdigitating ribs of cytoplasm separated by a fibrous sheet. Both internal and external leptotriches are also present. The apical surface of the cytoplasm lining the duct is convoluted and its surface area is further amplified by microvilli. Abstract | Millettia taiwaniana is a multipurpose medicinal plant used in the treatment of several diseases. The root bark is used by the Mizo people of India and Myanmar for the treatment of intestinal helminthiasis. The study aims to reveal the anthelmintic effects on a parasitic tapeworm of fowl, Raillietina galli, using scanning electron microscopy. The tapeworms were treatedin vitro with the methanol extract of the root bark. The treated cestodes were fixed, dehy- drated, and dried. They were then observed using scanning electron microscopy. There was massive tegumental damage throughout the body surface. Erosion and shrinkage were seen on the scolex and body segments. There were numerous pits due to disintegration of the tegumental layer. Folds and blebs were formed on the large gravid proglottids. M. taiwaniana extract exhibits powerful anthelmintic effects similar to those established of standard anthelmintic drugs.     Raja Fayaz Ali 140909 Parasitic Adaptations in Helminths 1 PARASITIC ADAPTATIONS IN HELMINTHS INTRODUCTION: Helminthes is derived from Greek word “Helmins” meaning “worms”. The term is not correct because it is applied to all elongated invertebrates without appendages and with bilateral symmetry. The term helminths is restricted to a few phyla of invertebrate animals, all of which are superficially worm like but they differ markedly in their morphology, life history and bionomics. The helminthes are restricted to three phyla of animal kingdom. These are: 1. Platyhelminthes ( a. Turbellaria; b. Trematoda & c. Cestoda) 2. Nematyhelminths (Nematoda e.g., Ascaris, Trichinella (viviparous), Enterobius, Dracunculus (viviparous) 3. Acanthocephala (Spiny headed worms) PARASITIC ADAPTATIONS: Adaptation may be defined as the fitness of an organism to live in its specific habitat or environment. The term is also applied to the process of adjustment involved and to a characteristic that so adjusts an animal. According to Herbert Spencer, “adaptability is the continuous adjustment of internal relation to external relation. According to another definition, “adaptation is the power of self regulation, self preservation and race continuation so as to enable an animal to remain alive and to adjust it according to changed environmental conditions and to give rise to offsprings. Thus adaptation to a specific environment is a dynamic feature of all living organisms. Parasitism has begun as an accidental chance of contact between two animals and there can be no doubt that parasites may have evolved during the course of time from free living forms. Step by step changes are difficult to explain, but sooner or later the guest began to lead a more dependent life upon its host for food and shelter.

In this study we investigated the in vitro effects of three natural flavonolignans—silybin (SB), 2,3-dehydrosilybin (DHSB) and silychristin (SCH)—on M. vogae larvae at concentrations of 5 and 50 µM under aerobic and hypoxic conditions for 72 h. With both kinds of treatment, the viability and motility of larvae remained unchanged, metabolic activity, neutral red uptake and concentrations of neutral lipids were reduced, in contrast with a significantly elevated glucose content.

Yadav* Department of Zoology, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong 793022, India ABSTRACT Ayurveda is one of the ancient systems of traditional medicine in India, however, there is a lack of proper scientific research and controlled studies on efficacy and toxicity of several Ayurvedic formulations using the methods of modern science, which hinders the proper development of Ayurveda, both in India and abroad. The present study was undertaken to further corroborate the efficacy of some popular anthelmintic Ayurvedic medicines, as evident by the pharmacological effects of Ayurvedic formulations on body surface of a cestode parasite. This study employed a common intestinal cestode of domestic fowl, Raillietina sp., as a model parasite, that was exposed in vitro to different concentrations of three common Indian Ayurvedic anthelmintic drugs, namely Krimimudgar Ras, Kriminol and Vidangasava, and also to a modern anthelmintic drug, praziquantel (PZQ). After the paralysis of parasites, the specimens from the highest drug-treated concentration (50 mg/ml), praziquantel (1 mg/ml), and control groups, were collected and processed for scanning electron microscopic studies to document the effects of drugs on the body surface of parasite. In this study, maximum degree of alterations on parasite body surface was observed in the worms exposed to Krimimudgar Ras, indicating this drug to be highly efficacious against intestinal worms and brings out a transtegumental mode of action on parasite. In conclusion, the findings of present study suggest that of the three Ayurvedic formulations tested, Krimimudgar Ras possesses significant anthelmintic effects, which are mediated through parasite’s body surface.
