The occurrence, in slaughter stocks, of fasciola spp, Echinococcus granulosus (hydatid) cysts, Taenia saginata Cysts, Taenia solium Cysts and ascaris spp. have been reported by various researchers. Information on these parasitic diseases is presented in this paper as they are the most important ones encountered in slaughter stocks in the country. -

Human infestation with the dwarf tapeworm has been reported from a wide variety of places in the United States but most of the evidence suggests that it is largely restricted to the southern part of the country. Even in the southern United States the incidence is low according to most of the data. Of the older surveys Greil (1915) re- ports 6 per cent dwarf tapeworm in 665 children examined in Alabama. The Rockefeller Sanitary Commission for the Eradication of Hook- worm Disease Reports for 1914 and 1915 record from 0 to 2.5 per cent dwarf tapeworm in eleven southern states (Alabama, Arkansas, Geor- gia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Ten- nessee, Texas, and Virginia) with an average of 1.8 per cent in the 141,247 persons examined. Wood (1912) tabulated the results of 62,786 routine fecal examinations made in the state laboratories of eight southern states (Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missis- sippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia) and found an average of less than 1 per cent infection with this worm. Of the more recent reports on the frequency of the dwarf tapeworm in the general population, three are based on extensive surveys. Spindler (1929) records that 3.6 per cent of the 2,152 persons of all ages examined in southwest Virginia were positive; Keller, Leathers, and Bishop (1932) report 3.5, 2.9, and 1.5 per cent in eastern, central and western Tennessee; and Keller and Leathers (1934) report 0.4 per cent in Mississippi. -

Price Center For Parasite Repository and Education College of Public Health, University of South Florida PRESENTS Sources of Infective Stages and Modes of Transmission of Endoparasites Epidemiology is the branch of science that deals with the distribution and spread of disease. How diseases are transmitted, i.e. how they are passed from an infected individual to a susceptible one is a major consideration. Classifying and developing terminology for what takes place has been approached in a variety of ways usually related to specific disease entities such as viruses, bacteria, etc. The definitions that follow apply to those disease entities usually classified as endoparasites i.e. those parasites that reside in a body passage or tissue of the definitive host or in some cases the intermediate host. When the definition of terms for the “Source of Infection” or “Mode of Infection” relate to prevention and/or control of an endoparasitic disease, they should be clearly described. For the source of infection, the medium (water, soil, utensils, etc.) or the host organism (vector, or intermediate host) on which or in which the infective stage can be found should be precisely identified. For the mode of transmission, the precise circumstances and means by which the infective stage is able to come in contact with, enter, and initiate an infection in the host should be described. SOURCE OF INFECTION There are three quite distinct and importantly different kinds of sources of the infective stage of parasites: Contaminated Sources, Infested Sources, and Infected Sources. CONTAMINATE SOURCES Contaminated Source, in parasitology, implies something that has come in contact with raw feces and is thereby polluted with feces or organisms that were present in it. -

Diphyllobothriosis caused by adults of the genera Dibothriocephalus, Adenocephalus and Diphyllobothrium is usually not a life-threatening disease. Sparganosis, in contrast, is caused by larvae (plerocercoids) of species of Spirometra and can have serious health consequences, exceptionally leading to host's death in the case of generalised sparganosis caused by ‘Sparganum proliferum’. While most of the definitive wildlife hosts of broad tapeworms are recruited from marine and terrestrial mammal taxa (mainly carnivores and cetaceans), only a few diphyllobothriideans mature in fish-eating birds. In this review, we provide an overview the recent progress in our understanding of the diversity, phylogenetic relationships and distribution of broad tapeworms achieved over the last decade and outline the prospects of future research. Macnish) Characterisation of Community-Derived Hymenolepis Infections in Australia ii Abstract Hymenolepis nana is a ubiquitous parasite, found throughout many developing and developed countries. Globally, the prevalence of H. nana is alarmingly high, with estimates of up to 75 million people infected. In Australia, the rates of infection have increased substantially in the last decade, from less than 20% in the early 1990’s to 55 - 60% in these same communities today. Our knowledge of the epidemiology of infection of H. nana is hampered by the confusion surrounding the host specificity and taxonomy of this parasite. The suggestion of the existence of two separate species, Hymenolepis nana von Siebold 1852 and Hymenolepis fraterna Stiles 1906, was first proposed at the beginning of the 20th century. Despite ongoing discussions in the subsequent years it remained unclear, some 90 years later, whether there were two distinct species, that are highly host specific, or whether they were simply the same species present in both rodent and human hosts. The ongoing controversy surrounding the taxonomy of H. nana has not yet been resolved and remains a point of difference between the taxonomic and medical literature.
