Ploidy levels range from diploid to dodecaploid with a genomic number of 7, and members can be difficult to classify into distinct species due to hybridization and apomixes. Species are distributed widely across Asia, Europe, North and South America with the center of diversity now considered to be in China, where there are 250-700 species of Rubus depending on the taxonomists. Rubus species are an important horticultural source of income and labor being produced for the fresh and processing markets for their health benefits. Blackberries and raspberries have a relatively short history of less than a century as cultivated crops that have been enhanced through plant breeding and they are only a few generations removed from their wild progenitor species. Rubus sp. are typically found as early colonizers of disturbed sites such as pastures, along forest edges, in forest clearings and along roadsides. Blackberries are typically much more tolerant of drought, flooding and high temperatures, while red raspberries are more tolerant of cold winters. Additionally, they exhibit vigorous vegetative reproduction by either tip layering or root suckering, permitting Rubus genotypes to cover large areas. The attractiveness of the fruits to frugivores, especially birds, means that seed dispersal can be widespread with the result that Rubus genotypes can very easily be spread to new sites and are very effective, high-speed invaders.

The presence of prickles, outgrowths of epidermal tissues lacking vasculature, on the canes, petioles, and undersides of leaves complicates both field management and harvest. The utilization of cultivars with fewer prickles or prickle-free canes simplifies production. A previously generated population segregating for prickles utilizing the s locus between the prickle-free cultivar Joan J (ss) and the prickled cultivar Caroline (Ss) was analyzed to identify the genomic region associated with prickle development in red raspberry. Genotype by sequencing (GBS) was combined with a genome- wide association study (GWAS) using fixed and random model circulating probability unification (FarmCPU) to analyze 8474 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and identify significant markers associated with the prickle-free trait. A total of four SNPs were identified on chromosome 4 that were associated with the phenotype and were located near or in annotated genes. This study demonstrates how association genetics can be used to decipher the genetic control of important horticultural traits in Rubus, and provides valuable information about the genomic region and potential genes underlying the prickle-free trait.     Crop Profile for Caneberries in California Prepared: February, 2000 General Production Information ● Caneberries is the general term for Rubus spp., which are commonly called raspberries and blackberries. When picked, raspberries leave the receptacle behind resulting in a cup-shaped fruit. On the other hand, blackberries retain the receptacle within the fruit and the fruit are not cup-shaped. Raspberries are in Rubus subgenus Idaeobatus and blackberries are in the subgenus Eubatus. There are also hybrids between raspberries and blackberries such as loganberry, boysenberry, and ollalieberry (5). In this profile raspberries, blackberries, and hybrids are considered together except where noted. Where they are separated, raspberries are one group and blackberries and hybrids are another group. ● In 1997, 19,400,000 pounds of raspberries were produced on 1,900 acres in California. The average yield was 10,200 pounds per acre. The average price was $1.41 per pound and the total crop value was $27,330,000 (2). ● Blackberries were produced on 714 acres in California in 1997 (1). ● In 1997, 2,500,000 pounds of boysenberries were produced on 270 acres in California. The average yield was 9,100 pounds per acre. The average price was $0.67 per pound and the total crop value was $1,639,000. The 1997 crop value was down from a high in 1988 of $3,814,000 when the price per pound was $1.82.     Berry Growing Business in 1896 The Blackberry, Raspberry and Loganberry In addition to the business done with strawberries, and as a sort of side issue to the latter, no small figure is cut by the shipment of blackberries, raspberries and Loganberries. In no one case in the valley is the acreage devoted to these latter berries as large as that of the smaller strawberry fields, but in nearly every case they are cultivated in small patches. In the length of time that they are marketable the raspberries follow strawberries, and some bushes bear a few berries nearly the year around and an enormous crop during their season. The blackberry season is comparatively short, but the fruit produced is second to none in size and flavor, and all varieties bear well in any part of the valley. They are extremely productive with good cultivation, and may be successfully grown in this climate without irrigation. The Loganberry, being a variety unfamiliar to people in any other place, I will devote more space to its account than to others. From a circular giving its history I extract these notes: The Loganberry originated with Judge J. H. Logan, of Santa Cruz, Cal., from whom it derives its name. Several years ago, growing in his garden, were plants of the Aughinbaugh blackberry and Red Antwerp raspberry. The plants, being near each other, had intermixed or grown together. The judge, having noticed that they bloomed and ripened their fruit together, conceived the idea of planting the seeds, from which planting resulted the production of the Loganberry.

    Dewberry – Wild Loganberry By Larry A. Yung Jr. Glass Larry Sr. and Larry Jr. David Doty’s site http://www.ddoty.com/dewberry.html list that the original molds for the Dewberry were made by the Co-Operative Flint Glass Company and were later iridized by the Phoenix Glass Company. Dewberry pieces are rarely found. Most of the examples of the Dewberry that I have seen are in marigold over milk glass. Carl and Eunice Booker have the only Marigold goblet with souvenir lettering that I have heard of. The Dewberry has been reported in the following shapes; sugar, creamer, water pitcher, goblet, and covered compote. I have seen the pattern called Dewberry, Wild Loganberry, and Wild Berry. I did not know the difference between a Dewberry plant and a Loganberry plant. With a little research, I have found the following; both the Wild Loganberry and Dewberry plants are related to the Blackberry family, and are vines that grow on the ground. The Dewberry plant is reported to have thorns on the vine and the Loganberry is reported not to have thorns. In the articles I have read, I have found pictures of both plants with thorns on the vines. As shown in the examples above, the pattern on the glass does not have any thorns. Looking at the berries and the leaves, it takes a bit of imagination to see a match to either of the two plants. So after a couple hours of looking at articles describing the fruit, the only conclusion I can come up with is, if you own one you can call it whatever you like.

THANKING YOU FOR ANY ASSISTANCE THAT YOU MAY GIVE, RON ALVES. Introduction This manual was initially created by Harold Whaley an MJC Agriculture and Natural Resources instruction from 1964 – 1992. The manual was designed as a resource for a native tree and shrub identification course, Natural Resources 222 that was one of the required courses for all forestry and natural resource majors at the college. The course and the supporting manual were aimed almost exclusively for forestry and related majors. In addition to NR 222 being taught by professor Whaley, it has also been taught by Homer Bowen (MJC 19xx -), Marlies Boyd (MJC 199X – present), Richard Nimphius (MJC 1980 – 2006) and currently Ron Alves (MJC 1974 – 2004). Each instructor put their own particular emphasis and style on the course but it was always oriented toward forestry students until 2006. The lack of forestry majors as a result of the Agriculture Department not having a full time forestry instructor to recruit students and articulate with industry has resulted in a transformation of the NR 222 course. The clientele not only includes forestry majors, but also landscape designers, environmental horticulture majors, nursery people, environmental science majors, and people interested in transforming their home and business landscapes to a more natural venue.
