The region is inhabited by nearly 600,000 people. There are 307 municipalities in the region, 30 of which are towns. The regional administration is located in Zlín, which is also the region's largest city. Picture 1: NUTS numbers in Czech Republic The Zlin region NUTS number is CZ072. The area of Zlín boasts of developed industry with long traditions of engineering, the production of tyres and other rubber based products, plastics, leather products as well as steel industry, leather and chemical processing. In the long run, the building industry is one of the top branches; the aviation industry also plays a role. The area is crossed by two main railway corridors enabling the operation of international Intercity and Eurocity services. One of the region’s top priorities is, however, the inevitable improvement of the road transport network. The economic prosperity of the entire region is influenced to a considerable extent by the young and dynamically growing of Tomas Bata University, which co-operates with the Zlín Region on copious development projects. The region boasts also a remarkable variety of landscape as well as a cultural heritage. It offers mountains, natural reserves, spas, fertile farming lands, the picturesque vineyards of Moravian Slovakia, the perfect architecture of historical parks, archaeological excavations with many findings from the era of the Great Moravian Empire, numerous buildings of national cultural heritage as well as the unique Functionalist complexes of the Bata’s era. 4 The cultural uniqueness of the region also stems from the fact that it is a region where three pronounced ethnographic areas meet: Wallachia, Moravian Slovakia and Haná. The Zlín Region has also won great renown by housing the Days of the People of Goodwill in Velehrad, a charity event connected to the nation-wide pilgrimage to celebrate the mission of Cyril and Methodius, the International Festival of Films for Children and Youth, the Summer Film School in Uherské Hradiště, and many popular folklore festivals such as the Kings Ride in Vlčnov, the Summer of Kunovice, Festivals in Liptál and Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, Haná Festival Chropyně and many others. The Forfest festival of spiritual music, which takes place in Kroměříž, the renewed salons of fine arts in Zlín and the Prostor Zlín exhibition of contemporary avant-garde arts have also helped spread the fame of the region far and wide. Motor racing fans will certainly know the Barum Rally, which has recently been awarded Europe's highest coefficient. In case yes, to what extent and under what conditions. Three districts in the South-Moravian Region, Znojmo, Bˇreclav, and Hodonín, situated in the rural borderland with Austria and Slovakia represented the study area. Both geographical and sociological methods were used to gather evidence for cultural tourism in that study. Firstly, attractiveness analysis of the area defined for cultural tourism took place. Next, factors influencing the potential for cultural tourism affecting rural development in South Moravia were evaluated. Finally, synergistic relations were discussed. In the territory, many forms of tourism intersect. Based on the results, it can be stated that cultural tourism can hardly be the main driver of rural development after the decline of agriculture because the region’s economy has branched out in several directions. However, it can be an important complementary activity that yields both economic and non-economic benefits.

  • Welcome to the Region of Moravian Slovakia – the Watermill in Bohuslavice
Welcome to the region of Moravian Slovakia – The Watermill in Bohuslavice At the crossroads of routs between Vienna (90km), Bratislava (100km), Budapest (400km) and Praha (190km), in the village of Bohuslavice, set in the woodland near the town of Kyjov, a historical building from the 18th century is situated: a former watermill. This ecologically preserved region offers visitors a rich history as well as a teeming contemporary cultural life. 1 Welcome to Slovácko, the region of living songs, rich cooking and good wine. Slovácko, („Moravian Slovakia“), is the border between two historical countries – Moravia and Slovakia. It is the land of the lower reaches of the Morava river. The origin of the local people is reflected in both the language and the name of the region – for they are, traditionally, both Moravians and Slovaks. A thousand-year-old arch connects the famous period of Great Moravia with the order, rhythm and poetry of the wine culture with its living music. Slovácko is near to other great cultural centres – Vienna, Brno, Bratislava and Prague. Wine cellars nestled beneath trees – this is a symbol of the Moravian landscape. Historical towns in Slovácko region reflect an old bygone aristocracy and a time when fortresses protected the land from periodic invasions. The history of the landscape and towns 2 in this region stretches back to the 8th and 9th century when a fortified settlement in the Morava river basin was directly at the centre of the great Christian civilization. The rivers in Moravia provided favourable conditions for the building of thousands of watermills, of which only a handful have survived intact; the Bohuslavice watermill is one of them.

The castle also houses an art gallery of world importance, with a rare work by the Italian master Titian, his painting of Apollo and Marsyas. Hungarian Geographical Geographical Bulletin Bulletin 65 65 2016 (2016) (1) (1) 15–25. 15–25.15 Regional identities of Czech historical lands Antonín VAISHAR and Jana ZAPLETALOVÁ1 Abstract Bohemia and Moravia are historical lands, which constitute Czechia (together with a small part of Silesia) since the 10th century. Two entirely diff erent sett lement systems can be identifi ed in Czechia: the centralistic Bohemian sett lement system surrounded by a ring of mountains, and the transitional and polycentric Moravian sett lement system. The two lands were physically divided by a border forest. Although they have belonged always to the same state, their autonomy was relatively high until the formation of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. In 1948, a new administrative division was introduced, which did not respect the border between the two lands. Bohemia and Moravia kept their importance as diff erent cultural units only. The main research question addressed in this paper is how the Bohemian and Moravian identities are perceived by the people today and whether it makes any sense to consider the historical lands seriously when rethinking the idea of the Europe of regions. Keywords: regional identity, administrative division, historical lands, Bohemia, Moravia, Czech Republic Introduction decision making power is dominated by the large ones. • The Construction of National Identity in the Historiography of Czech Art
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Enlighten: Theses THE CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF CZECH ART MARTA FILIPOVÁ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF THE HISTORY OF ART August 2008 © Marta Filipová 2008 Abstract National identity can be expressed in many ways by individuals, groups and states. Since the nineteenth century, Central Europe has been undergoing rapid changes in the political, social and cultural spheres, which was reflected in the self-definition of the nations living in this region, and in their definition by others. The Czech people, who until 1918 were a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, gave birth to a national revival movement in the nineteenth century and eventually emancipated themselves to create an independent Czechoslovakia. The idea of „national identity“ was, therefore, crucial and this was enhanced in many areas of human activity, including the construction of a historical legitimacy for the nation. The struggle for recognition of the historical existence of the Czech nation was also projected into the discourse adopted for historical and contemporary art writing and exhibition practice. In this thesis, I focus on the ways in which Czech national identity was constructed in the historiography of art. I shall argue that the various ideologies which influenced the writers led to an understanding of Czech art as epitomising certain qualities of the Czech nation. At the same time, the Czech nation was presented as highly advanced because of its artistic achievements.
