Juan Carlos Mazariegos Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2019 Juan Carlos Mazariegos All Rights Reserved Abstract A War of Proper Names: The Politics of Naming, Indigenous Insurrection, and Genocidal Violence During Guatemala’s Civil War During the Guatemalan civil war (1962-1996), different forms of anonymity enabled members of the organizations of the social movement, revolutionary militants, and guerrilla combatants to address the popular classes and rural majorities, against the backdrop of generalized militarization and state repression. Pseudonyms and anonymous collective action, likewise, acquired political centrality for revolutionary politics against a state that sustained and was symbolically co-constituted by forms of proper naming that signify class and racial position, patriarchy, and ethnic difference. Between 1979 and 1981, at the highest peak of mass mobilizations and insurgent military actions, the symbolic constitution of the Guatemalan state was radically challenged and contested. From the perspective of the state’s elites and military high command, that situation was perceived as one of crisis; and between 1981 and 1983, it led to a relatively brief period of massacres against indigenous communities of the central and western highlands, where the guerrillas had been operating since 1973. Despite its long duration, by 1983 the fate of the civil war was sealed with massive violence. Although others have recognized, albeit marginally, the relevance of the politics of naming during Guatemala’s civil war, few have paid attention to the relationship between the state’s symbolic structure of signification and desire, its historical formation, and the dynamics of anonymous collective action and revolutionary pseudonymity during the war.

    Reviews “plain brutes” (p. 50) the leaders of Africa. After independence they were “absolutely awful but their successors have been even worse” (p. 7). Nkrumah, with his “crazed dream” of socialism and unity for Africa, is their bête noire, slammed for “his vanity, ideological duplicity and disingenuousness” (p. 42). Jerry Rawlings does not fare much better: he was “a typical African despot,” the “great whale” (p. 163), though apart from bumping-off his predecessors, the authors are unable to nail him for a truly convincing vice. Busia was “bumbling” (p. 43). Acheampong was “an incompetent tyrant” (p. 10) and “Ghana’s chief kleptocrat” (p. 11). The disapprobation sweeps out to the other African leaders: Sekou Touré was “the destructive President of Guinea” (p. 66) and Eyadema of Togo “one of the worst blights ever to be cast on Africa” (p. 58). The jacket blurb presumably has these excoriations in mind in commending the book as “courageous.” One way or another, it has all been said before, and so many of the culprits are on the litigiously safe side of the grave. The thought-provoking contrast, however, is not with the Thompsons’ approbation of the Thai leaders, but with their panegyrics for the bourgeois intellectuals with whom they ally themselves: “that great economist Partha Dasgupta” (p. 158); “the great development economist Robert West” (p. 14); “the learned Carl Rosberg” (p. 44); and a stream of others, many of whom rate the over-exercised label “brilliant.” At Independence, African leaders had a passionate respect for academics, and insisted on the qualifications they had acquired, one way or another: Doctor Nkrumah, Doctor Obote, Doctor Banda.

    APUNTES HISTORIOGRAFICOS SOBRE MANI.JEL ESTRADA CABRETTA Oscar Guillermo Peláez Almengor El abogado quetzalteco Manuel Estrada Cabrera (1857-'1924), gobernó Guatemala de 1898 a1920. Su gobierno, el segundo más largo cn l,a historia del país, ha sido uno de los menos estudiados. Estrada C-abrera utilizó todos los medios a su alcance para mantenerse en el poder durante 22 años, sin embargo sus métodos, la base económica, b rasgos sociales y culturales de su régimen no han sido estudiados en profundidad. En síntesis, la complejidad social de Guatemala en los primeros veinte años del presente siglo ha sido poco investigada. Estrada Cabrera se graduó de abogado en Quetzaltenango, donde +rció su profesión. Posteriormente fue Juez de Primera Instancia en Retalhuleu, además Alcalde Municipal de Quetzaltenango y diputado por ese mismo departamento a la Asamblea Nacional Legislativa. También fue Ministro de Gobernación y Justicia del gobierno de José Ma¡ía Reyna Barrios de 1,892 a 1898. Durante aquel gobierno Estrada C-abrera llegó a ser Primer Designado a la Presidencia de la República, (-) Ponencia presentada al I Encuentro Nacional de Historiadores, Guatemala, noviembre 24-26,1993. Portier This dissertation - a postcolonial re-examination of Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th century Spanish priest often called “The Protector of the Indians” - is a conversation between three primary components: a biography of Las Casas, an interdisciplinary history of the conquest of the Americas and early Latin America, and an analysis of the Spanish debate over the morality of Spanish colonialism. The work adds two new theses to the scholarship of Las Casas: a reassessment of the process of Spanish expansion and the nature of Las Casas’s opposition to it. The first thesis challenges the dominant paradigm of 16th century Spanish colonialism, which tends to explain conquest as the result of perceived religious and racial difference; that is, Spanish conquistadors turned to military force as a means of imposing Spanish civilization and Christianity on heathen Indians.

[email protected] Abstract Nigeria has one of the poorest sets of national development indices in the world and it is widely believed that the underdevelopment of human capacity is a major factor contributing to Nigeria’s underdevelopment. Demographic segregation of the Nigerian population indicates that youths form the largest segment of the population. Hence, developmental efforts must target and/or capture the youthful population to have tangible and meaningful impact. The term youth empowerment is broadly employed to explain efforts aimed at providing coping skills and an enabling environment for youths to lead decent lives and contribute meaningfully to national development. An emerging trend in youth empowerment in Nigeria is entrepreneurship education. Entrepreneurship education assumed importance against the background of poverty, widespread unemployment and the need to shift the attention of the citizenry away from white collar jobs and government patronage. This study highlights the importance of youth empowerment towards attaining sustainable development of the Nigerian nation. It examines the place of entrepreneurship education in the empowerment of youths, and attempts to identify missing links in the execution of entrepreneurship education initiatives in Nigeria.
