LESTER & SONS Port Huron, Michigan INTRODUCTION In this latest edition of our city directory, we have listed the largest number of names ever recorded in the history of Port Huron. The direc• tory, therefore, reflects, as nothing else can, the growth of the community and the prosperity which it has enjoyed the past few years. It is, of course, a source of great satisfaction to us, as it should very well be to every pro• gressive and loyal citizen of Port Huron. There are many things which have combined to make Port Huron a wonderful place in which to work and do business. Nature, in the first place, gave it an incomparable location at the foot of the greatest and most beautiful of our inland seas, Lake Huron, and on the blue and spark• ling St. Clair River through which passes practically all the shipping of the Great Lakes. Nature has also presented us with a city of beautiful trees, wonderful bathing beaches, splendid factory sites, and, in fact, everything which goes to make a Metropolitan community. Man has continually through the years added much to what Nature has done. He has laid out attractive and lovely parks, wide and paved streets, fine and substantial homes and home sites for all classes of workers. He has built bridges and schools and sewers, as well as a system providing pure water in abundance, and at exceptionally cheap rates— it is municipally owned. Here, too, we have the great international Blue Water Bridge, its huge and attractive steel and concrete arms which stretch across the mouth of St. Clair River to our good neighbor Canada. Here is a bridge which is truly an international structure, having been financed by both countries. It is a popular bridge where thousands of vehicles cross annually from one country to the other. Within a few years, it will become a free bridge, owned and operated by the State of Michigan and the Province of Ontario. Port Huron and surrounding territory have many fine industries giving employment to thousands of men and women. We have paper mills, salt plants, railroad shops, a large brass factory and many other manu• facturing institutions, national in scope and ownership. Port Huron is the counter over which the great Thumb district of Michigan trades. It is the market place for a large and rich agricultural section of this great state. It has many fine department stores, shops and business places of all kinds, and indeed everything to supply the wants of the thousands who come here to trade and who find in this city a friendly atmosphere and a real desire to serve. A city manager form of government conducted on a business-like basis, a school system which is being steadily enlarged, an outstanding county government and board of supervisors, all go to make for contented living and continued growth and prosperity. And to all of this has been recently added a recreational Memorial Park and Stadium, built and erected through gifts from the people, in co-operation with the city—a testimonial unsurpassed to the splendid civic spirit of the community.
