Reported war situation (as confirmed per 17 January) - According to Sudan Tribune, the head of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, disclosed that Sudanese troops were deployed on the border as per an agreement with the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, arranged prior to the beginning of the war. - Al-Burhan told a gathering about the arrangements that were made in the planning of the military actions: “I visited Ethiopia shortly before the events, and we agreed with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia that the Sudanese armed forces would close the Sudanese borders to prevent border infiltration to and from Sudan by an armed party.” - Al-Burhan stated: "Actually, this is what the (Sudanese) armed forces have done to secure the international borders and have stopped there." His statement suggests that Abiy Ahmed spoke with him about the military plans before launching the military operation in Tigray. - Ethiopia has called the operation a “domestic law and order” action to respond to domestic provocations, but the planning with neighbours in the region on the actions paint a different picture.

The key to reducing maternal mortality ratio is increasing attendance by skilled health personnel throughout pregnancy and delivery. However, delivery service is significantly lower in Tigray region. Therefore, this study aimed to assess factors affecting choice of place of child birth among women in Ahferom woreda. A community based cross-sectional study both quantitative and qualitative method was employed among 458 women of age 15-49 years that experienced child birth and pregnancy in Ahferom woreda, Ethiopia. Multi stage stratified sampling technique with Probabilities proportional to size was used to select the study subjects for quantitative and focus group discussions (FGDs) for the qualitative survey. Study subjects again were selected by systematic random sampling technique from randomly selected kebelle’s in the Woreda. Data was collected using structured interview questionnaire and analyzed using SPPS version 16.0. A total of 458 women participated in the quantitative survey. One third of women were age 35 and above, 118(25.8%) were aged between 25-29 years. 247(53.9%) of women were illiterate, and 58.7% of women choice home as place of birth and 41.3% choice health facilities.

ABSTRACT Globally well-known ancient rock-hewn churches are present in Ethiopia in general and particularly in the central and eastern parts of Tigray regional state. They are important sites of heritage and tourism. Most of them are facing destabilization problem in different degree due to natural and anthropogenic factors. Among the affected, two churches hewn into sandstone located near Abreha-Atsibaha and Wukro (Kirkos/Cherkos church) in Tigray region were chosen for detailed study in terms of geological and engineering geological condition of the rocks in to which they are hewn. Both of them are affected by weathering and seepage. Both are carved into Mesozoic Adigrat sandstone that occupy higher elevations in topography, red in color and with iron and silica-rich alternating bands. Petrographic data suggest that the rock is dominated by quartz followed by feldspars; opaque and heavy minerals; pore spaces and carbonate/iron/silica cement. The rock is characterized by low to medium unconfined compressive strength. The alternating bands with varying mineralogical composition differ in mechanical properties and are responding differently to weathering and erosion. This is resulting in the development of minor spalling, pitting etc in the pillars, walls and roofs of the churches. Keeping the geological condition in view remedial measures are to be planned to minimize deterioration with time.

E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] ABSTRACT: New paleomagnetic result is reported from the Enticho Sandstone (Late Paleozoic age) at Negash locality in Northern Ethiopia. Twenty-three paleomagnetic core samples were collected from three sites for paleomagnetic investigations. Specimens were subjected either to progressive alternating field (AF) or thermal (TH) demagnetization techniques. Rock magnetic experiments revealed major magnetization carriers to be titano-magnetite and titano-hematite. Well-defined viscous remanent magnetizations (VRM) components are removed by intermediate AF fields of between 20–30 mT and heating above 600ºC. These magnetizations defining straight-line segments are directed towards the origin and interpreted as the Characteristic Remanent Magnetization (ChRM). Directions of magnetizations and site-mean directions in the in-situ coordinate results in Dec = 356.7°, Inc = 24.9º (N=23, K = 43, α95 = 4.7°). Paleomagnetic stability tests confirmed that the ChRMs identified are secondary and postdate age of deposition and tectonic tilting. The paleomagnetic pole position Long = 296.6ºE, Lat = 86.7ºN (A95 = 5.0º, N = 23) obtained from these data when plotted with the Apparent Polar Wander Path (APWP) of Africa (Besse and Courtillot, 1991, 2003; Cogné, 2003) gives a Quaternary age for the magnetization of Enticho Sandstone at Negash locality.
