To simplify, a building’s type is the basic form and massing of the building, whereas its architectural style describes the detailing applied to the form. Type addresses the overall size, shape and proportions of a building and the configuration of its rooms. Style refers to the decorative elements applied to a specific form, such as brackets or type of window or door. Toward the end of the 19th century with the inexpensive construction cost of a shotgun house, wood framed buildings were once again popular. Three centuries of living and building are what have created the “distinctive character” of the Vieux Carré. CreolE Cottage The Creole cottage, constructed from the 1790s to 1870s, is the earliest remaining Open Air local housing type in the city of New Orleans. The typical Creole cottage is 1- to 1-1/2- stories tall, 2-rooms wide and 2-rooms deep, often with two small storage rooms (cabinets), flanking a covered, open-air loggia. Creole cottages have a hipped or side gabled roof, frequently with tall, narrow, gabled dormer windows. A typical Creole cottage façade is symmetrical with four openings, usually four sets of French doors or two sets of French doors and two double-hung or casement windows, all shuttered. The front façade is sheltered from the weather by an overhang (abat-vent) or roof overhang that directs rain away from the front façade. Earlier examples of Creole cottages are constructed of brick-between- posts or masonry, with smooth plaster or wood weatherboard sheathing. later examples of Creole cottages are often of wood-frame construction with wood weatherboard siding. While the Creole cottage is a vernacular type with minimal stylistic features, cottages built in different eras may exhibit subtle stylistic details of their period, such as arched or flat-topped windows, dentil moldings or “Greek Key” door First Floor Plan surrounds. TownhOuse The townhouse building type, or some variation thereof, is common because its vertical massing and long, narrow footprint make efficient use of land. Common in the Vieux Carré from about the 1790s to 1890s, the townhouse building type is a 2- to 4-story, 1- to 2-room wide, 2-room deep masonry building with distinct vertical massing, a side gable or hipped roof and an orientation towards the street. The townhouse type first appeared in its Creole form in the late colonial period, but the basic type remained for the better part of a century as the American townhouse gained popularity. In townhouses from different periods of construction, the shape, type and style of windows vary, and whether or not a projection, such as a balcony or gallery, is present. The main block of a townhouse is typically rectangular in plan with a service building attached or semi-attached either to the rear at one side of the house or, alternatively, located along the rear edge of the property providing additional bedrooms or a garçonnière, and historically, a kitchen.

    The Architectural Style of Bay Pines VAMC Lauren Webb July 2011 The architectural style of the original buildings at Bay Pines VA Medical Center is most often described as “Mediterranean Revival,” “Neo-Baroque,” or—somewhat rarely—“Churrigueresque.” However, with the shortage of similar buildings in the surrounding area and the chronological distance between the facility’s 1933 construction and Baroque’s popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is often wondered how such a style came to be chosen for Bay Pines. This paper is an attempt to first, briefly explain the Baroque and Churrigueresque styles in Spain and Spanish America, second, outline the renewal of Spanish-inspired architecture in North American during the early 20th century, and finally, indicate some of the characteristics in the original buildings which mark Bay Pines as a Spanish Baroque- inspired building. The Spanish Baroque and Churrigueresque The Baroque style can be succinctly defined as “a style of artistic expression prevalent especially in the 17th century that is marked by use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements.” But the beauty of these contrasting elements can be traced over centuries, particularly for the Spanish Baroque, through the evolution of design and the input of various cultures living in and interacting with Spain over that time. Much of the ornamentation of the Spanish Baroque can be traced as far back as the twelfth century, when Moorish and Arabesque design dominated the architectural scene, often referred to as the Mudéjar style. During the time of relative peace between Muslims, Christians, and Jews in Spain— the Convivencia—these Arabic designs were incorporated into synagogues and cathedrals, along with mosques.

    MOKELUMNE HILL DESIGN REVIEW GUIDELINES 13 August 2012 By Mokelumne Hill Design Review Committee For Calaveras County Board of Supervisors 1 Introduction The Mokelumne Hill Community Plan (Community Plan) recognizes the historic architecture and character of the community and seeks to preserve these assets. A Historic Design Review District (Historic District) and Gateway Design Review Areas (Gateway Areas) have been identified and all development (new and remodeling) requiring a permit or approval by Calaveras County within the Historic District and Gateway Areas is subject to these Design Review Guidelines (Guidelines) (see Appendix A maps). In addition, all Designated Historic Buildings as identified in Appendix B are subject to these Guidelines. Areas outside of the Historic District and Gateway Areas are also recognized as having valuable architectural and historical qualities and the application of these Guidelines will be encouraged but not required in those areas. The Guidelines, in principal, were approved as part of the Mokelumne Hill Community Plan in 1988. These completed Guidelines were approved by Resolution No. 2012- 163 on November 13, 2012 by the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors. Acknowledgements This document was initially drafted in 2005 by members of the Mokelumne Hill History Society, Julia Costello and Paula Leitzell, with the architectural descriptions and identifications contributed by Judith Marvin, Registered Architectural Historian. Giacomo Barozzi was born on the 1st of October, 1507, in Vignola, near Modena, Italy. He was orphaned at an early age. His mother's family, seeing his talents, sent him to an art school in Bologna, where he distinguished himself in drawing and by the invention of a method of perspective. To perfect himself in his art he went to Eome, studying and measuring all the ancient monuments there. For this achievement he received the honors of the Academy of Architecture in Eome, then under the direction of Marcello Cervini, afterward Pope. In 1537 he went to France with Abbé Primaticcio, who was in the service of Francis I. Barozzi was presented to this magnificent monarch and received a commission to build a palace, which, however, on account of war, was not built. At this time he de- signed the plan and perspective of Fontainebleau castle, a room of which was decorated by Primaticcio. He also reproduced in metal, with his own hands, several antique statues. Called back to Bologna by Count Pepoli, president of St. Petronio, he was given charge of the construction of that cathedral until 1550. Final Landmark Recommendation adopted by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, August 7, 2014 CITY OF CHICAGO Rahm Emanuel, Mayor Department of Planning and Development Andrew J. Mooney, Commissioner The Commission on Chicago Landmarks, whose nine members are appointed by the Mayor and City Council, was established in 1968 by city ordinance. The Commission is re- sponsible for recommending to the City Council which individual buildings, sites, objects, or districts should be designated as Chicago Landmarks, which protects them by law. The landmark designation process begins with a staff study and a preliminary summary of information related to the potential designation criteria. The next step is a preliminary vote by the landmarks commission as to whether the proposed landmark is worthy of consideration. This vote not only initiates the formal designation process, but it places the review of city per- mits for the property under the jurisdiction of the Commission until a final landmark recom- mendation is acted on by the City Council. This Landmark Designation Report is subject to possible revision and amendment dur- ing the designation process. Located in the Uptown community area, the Cairo Supper Club Building is an unusual building de- signed in the Egyptian Revival architectural style, rarely used for Chicago buildings. This one-story commercial building is clad with multi-colored terra cotta, created by the Northwestern Terra Cotta Company and ornamented with a variety of ancient Egyptian motifs, including lotus-decorated col- umns and a concave “cavetto” cornice with a winged-scarab medallion.

Since the turn of the 20th Century, this street has attracted numerous prominent southern Californians. This street is named after Robert Gillis’ daughter, Adelaide. Robert Gillis was the owner of the Santa Monica Land and Water Co. and bought thousands of acres in the Palisades in the 1880s. In 1923, Gillis sold 22,000 acres to Alphonso Bell, who developed Bel Air, and went on to develop the Pacific Palisades. 6. Worrell “Zuni House,” 1923-24 710 Adelaide Pl. Architect Robert Stacey-Judd is best known for his Mayan-themed architecture, as is evident in the Pueblo Revival style home, the only known example of his work in Santa Monica. The design of the house embodies many of the character-defining features of the Pueblo Revival style, including an asymmetrical facade, block composition, and flat roofs with parapets highlighted by red tile coping. Noteworthy are projecting roof beams (a.k.a. vigas) typical of the Zuni tribe of Arizona Indians. The rounded corners of the terraced walls, simulate adobe. A stepped Mayan motif is repeated in the door and window frames. It’s said that the work of this architect "is always a surprise.” 7.

    PROJECT CASE STUDY Restoration of a Vintage Limestone Portico with Architectural Precast Concrete Presents a case study on the use of architectural precast concrete as a cost-effective approach to restore an historic park facility in Chicago, Illinois. The main entrance portico of the facility was originally constructed with an elaborate limestone beam or entablature, carried by massive limestone columns. The carved limestone architrave (soffit), frieze, and cornice (upper projection) pieces of the entablature were attached to backup brickwork and concealed steel lintel beams with metal anchors. After significant stone damage and movements occurred due to long-term corrosion of embedded steel components, several David B. Tigue, P.E., S.E. limestone soffit pieces were removed from the building for safety.     Tear It Down! Save It! Preservationists have gained the upper hand in protecting historic buildings. Now the ques- tion is whether examples of modern architecture— such as these three buildings —deserve the same respect as the great buildings of the past. By Larry Van Dyne The church at 16th and I streets in downtown DC does not match the usual images of a vi- sually appealing house of worship. It bears no resemblance to the picturesque churches of New England with their white clapboard and soaring steeples. And it has none of the robust stonework and stained-glass windows of a Gothic cathedral. The Third Church of Christ, Scientist, is modern architecture. Octagonal in shape, its walls rise 60 feet in roughcast concrete with only a couple of windows and a cantilevered carillon interrupting the gray façade. Surrounded by an empty plaza, it leaves the impression of a supersized piece of abstract sculpture. The church sits on a prime tract of land just north of the White House. The site is so valua- ble that a Washington-based real-estate company, ICG Properties, which owns an office building next door, has bought the land under the church and an adjacent building originally owned by the Christian Science home church in Boston. It hopes to cut a deal with the local church to tear down its sanctuary and fill the assembled site with a large office complex. The congregation, which consists of only a few dozen members, is eager to make the deal — hoping to occupy a new church inside the complex.
