Information Classification: CONTROLLED Street trading grant application – The Surfin Gherkin Appendix 1 We have received a grant application from Mr Thomas Lacey trading as ‘The Surfin Gherkin’ who wish to trade at Trevemper Road (in the parking spaces), Newquay (see plans below). ‘Trevemper Road – I’ll aim to use a parking spot closest to the pathway junctions/entrances for the park. This would help ensure easy pedestrian flow. Could I ask for permission to ask people to perhaps que on the grassy side in the park? I’d like to have a box of frisbees etc. for people to borrow and enjoy in the park also. The location may alter slightly if I’m unable to park in the same spot each day. I’d be trading a maximum of 3 hours per day – in line with parking restrictions. My preferred trading times will be either 9am -12pm or 10am-1pm, this will depend on weather, seasons etc’. Further details from the application are:- ******GENERAL***** ‘Proposal to trade from a small blue, double hatched trailer. Had a full renovation in line with environmental health suggestions. I have a nice packaging/waste return initiative prepared, in which people will be given extra stamps on a loyalty card for simply returning my packaging and putting it in my bin/recycling box. This will be open to anyone who finds any of my packaging anywhere (and will be visible on the packaging). I also intend to extend this offer for any beach rubbish or rubbish found along the Gannel that is collected and brought up to me. Happy to do daily sweeps for rubbish around the park/Gannel with incentives for helpers. After extensive research on the food and drink options currently available throughout Newquay, I will be offering something truly unique, including properly brewed Chai’s and golden milks, a selection of healthy herbal teas and fruit teas, all of which make a delicious range of refreshing iced teas. Sourced from one of the Information Classification: CONTROLLED Street trading grant application – The Surfin Gherkin Appendix 1 UK’s leading companies specialising in single origin teas (Estate Tea Co.) - an ethical tea partnership company. I consider myself courteous, enthusiastic and polite, with my primary goal to make a positive impact within the community. It is my mission to offer a healthy injection of smiles, play, arts/dance/yogic inspired class sessions (when Covid permits - Online sessions until then!), good food and health-promoting teas within Newquay. With relation to Covid, I am currently educating myself with a number of courses offered by NCASS (Nationwide Caterers Association) focusing on how to operate in the safest manner possible. I plan to support a number of local groups and people, and to enlist their help to offer free classes to the community. These include the Newquay Spinners (an arts group with some members happy to teach skills such as yoga, tai chi, hula-hooping, juggling, ecstatic dance). I have the support of a number of other local instructors that will be happy to take payment from me to run free classes for people who can sign up on the day. This would make the classes available for both residents and tourists alike. Initially, I will calculate any carbon emissions and offset them monthly. A friend who works for the UN Climate Programme has recommended using Mossy Earth, 1 Percent for the Planet and B-Corp, to make a fully coherent, environmentally friendly plan. I'm planning to implement a solar panel energy system, with the ultimate hope of operating in a carbon negative manner. I intend to power the trailer with onboard lithium-ion batteries so would operate quietly, and without any noise or exhaust fumes of a generator. There are various spaces close to the proposed pitch that would make fantastic areas for the outdoor classes that I hope to run for the general public. I am happy to work within limited hours of parking restrictions’. In this time of health crisis, I intend to offer the healthiest options possible! (Proper) Masala Chai & Golden Milk - secret mix of 10 fresh and dried spices, made with oat-milk brewed on the stove for at least 15 minutes. Hoping to do overnight brews offsite also. - (Delicious and aromatic, with immune system and general health supporting benefits!). Variety of fresh herbal teas also! A range of vegan cakes and muffins, including my mum’s chocolate & zucchini cake, rosemary and salted chocolate cookies, and banana & peanut muffins. Savoury crepes – example: Aubergine “bacon”, broccoli sprouts, sliced avocado, balsamic glaze, vegan smoked paprika mayo & seasoning Sweet crepes – example: Lemon & coconut sugar crépe with macerated coconut and lemon zest Local honey will be used, I know a couple of beekeepers around Perranporth and Blowinghouse, as will as much local fresh produce as possible. In terms of sourcing spices, I buy from www.naturekitchen.co.uk who are as small and local as a company gets. They blend the spices themselves in a small out-house on Bodmin moor. Other herbs are sourced from various plant nurseries around Cornwall. One main source of ingredients will be Newquay Freshpoint initially, who assure me of their responsible sourcing practices. I am also developing relationships with a number of local farms to source other local produce, including a friends permaculture project that I want to support, and also predict will be vital with the initial state of affairs with the EU and the difficulties/cost of importing fresh produce. All of our packaging is compostable, using “Vegware” as our supplier.
