  • Glacier Elevation and Mass Changes in Himalayas During 2000-2014
The Cryosphere Discuss., https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-2019-85 Manuscript under review for journal The Cryosphere Discussion started: 29 April 2019 c Author(s) 2019. CC BY 4.0 License. Glacier elevation and mass changes in Himalayas during 2000-2014 Debmita Bandyopadhyay1, Gulab Singh1, Anil V.Kulkarni2 1Center of Studies in Resources Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, 400076, India 5 2Divecha Centre for Climate Change, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, 560012, India Abstract Glacier mass balance is a crucial parameter to understand the changes in glaciers. For the Himalayas, it is more complex as glaciers have a heterogeneous pattern of elevation and mass changes. In this study, 10 mass balance using geodetic method is estimated, for which we utilize SRTM and TanDEM-X global digital elevation models (DEMs) of the year 2000 and 2012-2014 respectively. The unique feature of this study is that the dataset are prepared using repeat bistatic synthetic aperture radar interferometry which has not been used over the rugged Himalayan terrains on such a large-scale. The elevation and mass change measurements cover seven states namely Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, 15 Uttarakhand, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. The mean elevation change is -0.45 ± 0.40 m yr -1 and the mass budget is -11.24 ± 0.79 Gt yr -1. However, the cumulative mass loss over the observation period of 2000-2014 is -154.72 ± 19.04 Gt which accounts for approximately 5% of the total ice-mass present in the Indian Himalayas. This ice-mass loss contributes to 0.42 ± 0.05 mm of sea- level rise.

  • Monsoon-Influenced Glacier Retreat in the Ladakh Range, Jammu And
Geophysical Research Abstracts Vol. 18, EGU2016-166, 2016 EGU General Assembly 2016 © Author(s) 2015. CC Attribution 3.0 License. Monsoon-influenced glacier retreat in the Ladakh Range, Jammu and Kashmir Tom Chudley, Evan Miles, and Ian Willis Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge ([email protected]) While the majority of glaciers in the Himalaya-Karakoram mountain chain are receding in response to climate change, stability and even growth is observed in the Karakoram, where glaciers also exhibit widespread surge- type behaviour. Changes in the accumulation regime driven by mid-latitude westerlies could explain such stability relative to the monsoon-fed glaciers of the Himalaya, but a lack of detailed meteorological records presents a challenge for climatological analyses. We therefore analyse glacier changes for an intermediate zone of the HKH to characterise the transition between the substantial retreat of Himalayan glaciers and the surging stability of Karakoram glaciers. Using Landsat imagery, we assess changes in glacier area and length from 1991-2014 across a ∼140 km section of the Ladakh Range, Jammu and Kashmir. Bordering the surging, stable portion of the Karakoram to the north and the Western Himalaya to the southeast, the Ladakh Range represents an important transitional zone to identify the potential role of climatic forcing in explaining differing glacier behaviour across the region. A total of 878 glaciers are semi-automatically identified in 1991, 2002, and 2014 using NDSI (thresholds chosen between 0.30 and 0.45) before being manually corrected. Ice divides and centrelines are automatically derived using an established routine. Total glacier area for the study region is in line with that Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI) and ∼25% larger than the GLIMS Glacier Database, which is apparently more conservative in assigning ice cover in the accumulation zone.

This article is also a gift to Gen-X, like Naveen, who know more of our religion, culture and heritage than men of their age. Each part is self explanatory with notes to avoid reference to previous part.…Rattan} Mahima {Grace} Of Mother Sharda. As a young boy I got used to hear folk tales of Sone Kisli and other tales from Granny Zapar Ded, but what interested me was her narration of travelogue of Pandit Bhawani Kaul of 18th Century {Descendant of Pandit Narain Kaul; who wrote History of Kashmir during Akbar’s time}. His travels through dense forests in quest of spiritual and literary enlightenment kept me, an eight-year-old, gazing at her next lip movement, however, it was Bhawani Kaul’s challenging pilgrimage to Gangabal and Sharda Temple which impressed me most. At Matamal uncle would hold court at his Rehbab Sahib residence and amongst various discourses, Pandit Harjoo Fehrist’s {Mid 19th Century; social reformer and staunch Vedhist} visits to Sharda Temple, till he lost his life at the temple, held us spell bound. Those days Goddess Sharda meant a lot to me, in my quest to do well in studies.

  • Better Economic Alternative for Rural Kashmir :By Mr. Riyaz Ahmed Wani
Better economic alternative for rural Kashmir :by Mr. Riyaz Ahmed Wani GENESIS OF ECONOMIC CRISIS IN J&K Post 1947, Kashmir economy had a cataclysmic start. The state embarked upon its development process by the enactment of Big Landed Estates Act 1949-50, a radical land redistribution measure which abolished as many as nine thousand Jagirs and Muafis. The 4.5 lac acres of land so expropriated was redistributed to tenants and landless. Land ceiling was fixed at 22.75 acres. This was nothing short of a revolutionary departure from a repressive feudal past. And significantly enough, it was preceded or followed by little or negligible social disturbance. This despite the fact that no compensation was paid to landlords. More than anything else, it is this measure which set the stage for new J&K economy. In the given circumstances, the land reforms proved sufficient to turn around the economic condition of the countryside with the hitherto tenants in a position to own land and cultivate it for themselves. However, the reforms though unprecedented in their nature and scale were not only pursued for their own sake but were also underpinned by an ambitious economic vision. Naya Kashmir, a vision statement of Shiekh Muhammad Abdullah, laid down more or less a comprehensive plan for a wholesome economic development of the state. But the dismissal of Shiekh Abdullah’s legitimately elected government in 1953 by the centre changed all that. The consequent uncertainty which lingers even now created an adhocist political culture animated more by vested interest than a commitment to the development of the state.

  • Inclusion and Exclusion – Emergent
Südasien-Chronik - South Asia Chronicle 3/2013, S. 111-134 © Südasien- Seminar der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin ISBN: 978-3-86004-295-3 Inclusion and Exclusion: Emergent Social Milieus in Kashmir‘s Suburbs DAVID DEVADAS [email protected] Introduction This paper is about the development of suburbs in Kashmir over the past quarter century. The former polarity between city and hinterland is becoming blurred in these suburbs, both physically and culturally. This paper is divided into two parts. The first gives a macroscopic overview of how the concepts and contours of community are being re-imagined in these suburbs. Part Two provides glimpses of the same processes on a microcosmic scale, presenting the ongoing socio-economic and cultural changes as organic processes. The intention is that this micro- view will, in combination with the macro-perspective presented in Part One, give a multi-dimensional impression of community-formation in suburban Kashmir. Part One describes hitherto uncommon forms of exclusion in these suburbs, even to the extent of apparent social fragmentation. On the 111 other hand, new patterns of inclusion are also becoming evident, some of them trans-local, virtual, even global in scale. Part Two presents a set of vignettes from my participant observations (Robben & Sluka 2012: 3) during fieldwork at a Kashmiri suburban wedding in the late summer of 2011. Through my participant observations at rituals and preparations in the bride’s household, I present glimpses of emergent facets of inclusion and exclusion in relationships based on family, friendship, religion, gender and linguistic-ethnic community. 1. Emergent Communities In order to adequately understand contemporary developments in urbanism in Kashmir, it is worthwhile first to focus briefly on what the DAVID DEVADAS term ‘city’ has traditionally meant in that particular context.

HUMAN RIGHTS REVIEW 2016 I Insha Malik, 14, blinded in both her eyes due to pellets fired at her by government forces Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society The Bund, Amira Kadal, Srinagar J&K www.jkccs.net PAGE 1 BRIEF OVERVIEW OF YEAR 2016 The year of 2016 has just ended. The year of 2016 has singularly been one of the most violent years of the last decade. The scale of human rights violence perpetrated against the people of Jammu and Kashmir alone suggests that the governments in Kashmir continue to repress the political aspirations of people with absolute and total violence. The year of 2016 has not just seen the killing of almost 145 civilians at the hands of police and paramilitary personal, but it has seen an upward trend in the number of militants and armed forces killings. The year of 2016 was marred with an unprecedented cycle of violence. Throughout the year Kashmiris witnessed gross violations of human rights in the form of extrajudicial executions, injuries, illegal detentions, torture, sexual violence, disappearances, arson and vandalism of civilian properties, restriction on congregational religious activities, media gags, and ban on communication and internet services, etc. The most fundamental rights of people were curtailed through the imposition of curfew, strikes and continued violence. The long pending conflict in Jammu and Kashmir continues to take human lives every year, endlessly. In 2016 the Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the killing of 383 persons which is statistically the highest in last five years. Moreover, thousands and thousands of persons were injured and there were illegal detentions of around 10,000 people besides arson and clampdown of communication services.

Revised Working Plan for the Anantnag Forest Division 2014-15 to 2023-2024 by Dr. B. BALAJI, IFS WORKING PLAN OFFICER Prepared by Working Plan & Research Circle J&K Forest Department Jammu/Srinagar Introduction The present working plan is the 5th revision of the Working Plan for Anantnag Forest Division. During the period of previous working plan by ShamimMohd Khan ((1982-83 to 1991-92), the Anantnag Division was known as Kashmir Forest Division. In the year 1981, vide Govt. Order No. 34/FST of 1981 dt.20.02.1981, Liddar Range was shifted to Liddar division. Further, in the year 2010 Kulgam Range was annexed with Kulgam Special Forest Division created vide Govt. Order No. 407 – Fst of 2010-10-25 dated: 25-10-2010 issued under endorsement No. Fst/Plan-14/2007 (PF) dated: 25- 10-2010.Hencethe total forest area is only half of the area of previous working plan and is presently 798.64 sq.km only The working plan exercise was started in the financial year 2010-11. Active field work started since 2011 only. Since most of staff of Anantnag Forest Division are new to working plan exercise and also in the usage of Wedge Prism, several field exercises were organized prior to taking up of the exercise. The technique of “Point Sampling” has been employed in the inventory for evaluating the growing stock. The GPS (Global Positioning System ) is fully utilized for the first time. The compartment boundaries were digitized for the first time with the help of Photo Interpretation division, Srinagar. For stock maps also, digitized printed maps were utilized to the scale using GIS (Geographical Information System).
