It was held on July 1st with a number of full time residents attending. Not all is quiet while we are up north in our summer homes. We still have a couple of places left for sale. The two new homes going in lot 35 and lot 65 should be completed when we return in the fall. It is good to see some of the park being replaced with new homes. The water bills from the city keep getting better than the previous year. We are still looking to improve with less water usage. The bills are getting closure in what we used than the previous year. We still need to look at where we are losing water in the park. The budget meeting will be coming up in November. We are looking to balance the budget so we are not using so much of our savings when we vote for fully funded or partially funded budget. We are trying to keep a reasonable balance in what we take in verses paid out of our savings. We are looking at a small increase in maintenance fees to bring that balance closer. We had a request in writing in suggestion to look at some of our rules and regulations. This is still in the planning stage. The committee will be a mix of board members and residents to look at these rules and try to make them easier to understand. Some of the rules are not defined as to their intent. The board has not fully taken time to set up what is needed of this committee. This will be discussed more fully when we return in the fall. I have had great reviews of our lone board member that is taking care of business in the park. If you happen to see Skip Delf thank him for all his help this summer. It is a great help having someone there all summer long. 3 From the Editor’s Desk By Sue Bailey [email protected] Although there aren't any national holidays in Canada or the USA in the month of August, there is an observance in the US on August 21st called National Senior Citizens Day. It was established to honor senior citizens who made contributions in their communities and to also bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens. Here at Golden Acres we are definitely in the dog days of summer. That hot sultry period of summer when Sirius the dog star rises and sets with the sun between early July and early September. August is the last full month of summer. Most of us at Golden Acres remain indoors unless it's really early in the morning or late in the evening. Even our pool water is very warm. Mary Ellen Hearns (unit 18) shared Mel's Memorial Card for his Memorial Service held on June 27th to celebrate his life. It is a beautiful tribute to Mel! Within this newsletter are articles of the events that have occurred this summer at Golden Acres. It won't be long and the park will be bustling with residents again and even more scheduled events. The month of August is named after Augustus Caesar, founder and the first emperor of the Roman Empire. August birthstones are peridot, green in color and one of the oldest known gemstones; and sardonyx, lesser known but is a white and brown banded gemstone once believed to have mystical powers. The official flower is gladiolus. I hope you are enjoying your summer wherever your journey takes you. Until next time, May God bless and keep you well and safe… 4 Notes from the Office By Jo Ellen Bryant Hi everyone, we are into a full -fledged summer here at Golden Acres. Our summer residents had a lovely Picnic at the clubhouse on July 1st with fried chicken and all the works. It was well attended, but more folks signed up than attended. This makes planning difficult and we do wish you had all come. Thanks to the committee who planned, and the personalized manner in which residents were invited by hand delivering flyers. There were lots of new faces of residents who do not normally attend events. It was great to see everyone. Please view the photos on our web site. Last month I stated an incorrect fact about Canadian credit checks. We were told one thing, and then informed it was not true. Our Tenant Check company can NOT do credit checks on Canadian residents. We have a different method of checking Canadian credit which we have always used and will continue to do so. I’d like to remind everyone what you can put in your recycling blue bins for the city to pick up on Mondays: Cardboard, glass bottles – all colors; all plastic containers (no Styrofoam); paper milk and juice cartons; newspapers; aluminum can; and steel cans. With recycling, your regular trash should be significantly reduced. If you have any problems with your recycle bin let the office know. If you are thinking of renting your unit in the fall or winter, please let us know. There are many forms on our web site, one of these is to be used if you have a renter. Or, I will gladly mail you a form. If the time has come that you want to sell your unit, you must notify the office in writing of your intent to sell before you post a FOR SALE sign or advertise your unit for sale. An email will suffice for this note. You are all doing a good job having your summer residents signing into the office or library. Keep up the good work. The summer offers lots of recreation to local residents and there are many points of interest to visit. Recently I visited the Tampa Theater which was built in 1926 as a theater to show silent films. It is an amazing theater with quite a history and has been slowly renovated through the years. They offer a guided 1 ½ hour tour at 11:30 on Saturday mornings for $12 which is most interesting followed by a foreign film. They even demonstrate their pipe organ which was used to accompany the silent films. Every Sunday afternoon a classic old movie is shown in the theater for a minimal fee. It’s a great place to take visitors and a cool place literally to enjoy a morning and afternoon of Tampa history. 5 Mel Hearn's Memorial Card By Mary Ellen Hearns Thought you might want to see a copy of Mel's Memorial Card. 6 Good to Know By Bob & Rita Sheire In the event that there is a horrible smell from a rotting corpse under your coach that invades your living area try this, it really works: Mix oil of wintergreen (according to Carol Spinney can be purchased from The Medicine Shoppe in the plaza across from Golden Acres) and olive oil in a dish of half oil of wintergreen and half olive oil (50/50). It reduces the smell and has a pleasant fragrance. Summertime Maintenance on our Water Valves By Jo Ellen Bryant JUST IN TIME PLUMBING Will be working in the park the next couple of days changing out the valves in our water mains. Start date July 6th There will be periods of time that the water will be turned off in the park! WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE DURING THIS TIME. 7 The Recreation Committee Report By Ron Short There will be no recreation report for August and September. Please have a Safe, Happy and Healthy Summer. Hike Inn By Brenda & Pat Neafsey There is an Inn on Springer Mountain in Georgia where the only way there is to hike in, hence the name of the hotel is "Hike Inn". No vehicles allowed. We made it! 8 Canada Day at Surprise Lake By Lorne & Cheryl Taylor The Taylors celebrate Canada Day at beautiful Surprise Lake just outside Thunder Bay.

  • June 2015 G E “BE IT DONE UNTO ME ACCORDING to YOUR WORD” (Luke 1: 38) T Dear Voluntas Family
T Voluntas Dei Institute O June 2015 G E “BE IT DONE UNTO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WORD” (Luke 1: 38) T Dear Voluntas Family, H Our God is a God of surprises! Pope Francis tells us repeatedly not to be afraid of the surprises of the Holy Spirit. In fact, Pope Francis himself is a surprise of the Holy E Spirit. Fr. Parent was also a surprise for the Church and his OMI community. He was a man who was always open to newness, life, and surprises. It seems as if he was never R crippled by fear but instead was fueled by faith and trust in God. It was this sense of trust that led him to take the leap of faith in founding two secular institutes (The OMMI’s and N the Voluntas Dei Institute) when most people at the time never heard of secular institutes. God’s surprises are not in the past but continue into the present. The Affiliates in our Institute are another surprise of the Holy Spirit. Single women, married men, and E religious order priests started to come to our team meetings. They did not fit into the usual canonical categories (ordained members who wanted to transfer to Voluntas, seminarians, married couples, single men). The General Assembly of 2010 recognized God’s surprise S and created a new category that we call “Affiliates” or “Spiritually Affiliated Persons.” S I cannot help but think that Fr. Parent is rejoicing in heaven that the charism that God gave to him is not stagnant but continues to evolve in the Church.

The Campership Incentive Program (CIP) seeks to increase the number of Jewish children enjoying transformative experiences at Jewish overnight summer camp. This is done by providing financial incentives to first-time campers who are not currently participating in an immersive daily Jewish experience. The Foundation for Jewish Camp, in partnership with dozens of Jewish community federations, camps and camp movements across North America, provides incentive grants of $1,000 to first-time campers who attend a nonprofit Jewish overnight camp. Camp sessions must last 19 consecutive days. What are the eligibility requirements for applicants? Eligibility is based on several factors: where you live, past camp experience and the grade your camper will be entering in the fall of 2010. These factors are ultimately determined by your local sponsoring agency, but in general, eligibility requirements that are adhered to by the majority of partners are as follows: 1. Campers must have never previously attended a nonprofit Jewish overnight camp for 19 consecutive days or longer before applying for the grant.

Having always been fascinated by the period of Hildegard’s life where she lived as an anchoress, (essentially walled up inside a small enclosure as a literal “anchor” of prayer for that monastic community) I have thought many times about how women have been able to find creativity in spite of (or perhaps, I mused, *because of*) the most confining spaces, sometimes metaphorically, sometimes as in Hildegard’s case, physically. As a modern child of post-Vatican II nuns in sweaters and sensible shoes, but raised by a mother who was taught by nuns in classic habits, so too was the life of the cloister fascinating to me and it was while visiting the cloistered abbey of Hildegard while pregnant with my eldest that I for the first time started to really consider what that mode of life meant for her and her creative output.

  • A Film by Michelle Memran
piEce by piece productions p r e s e n t S MARIA IRENE FORNES “Intimate and exhilarating.” The New Yorker THE REST I MAKE UP A FILM BY MICHELLE MEMRAN USA | 2018 | 1hr19 |1.77 | Color | 5.1 SYNOPSIS Maria Irene Fornes is one of America's greatest playwrights and most influential teachers, but many know her only as the ex-lover of writer and social critic Susan Sontag. The visionary Cuban-American dramatist constructed astonishing worlds onstage, writing over 40 plays and winning nine Obie Awards. At the vanguard of the nascent Off-Off Broadway experimental theater movement in NYC, Fornes is often referred to as American theater's "Mother Avant-Garde." When she gradually stops writing due to dementia, an unexpected friendship with filmmaker Michelle Memran reignites her spontaneous creative spirit and triggers a decade-long collaboration that picks up where the pen left off. The duo travels from New York to Havana, Miami to Seattle, exploring the playwright's remembered past and their shared present. Theater luminaries such as Edward Albee, Ellen Stewart, Lanford Wilson, and others weigh in on Fornes's important contributions. What began as an accidental collaboration becomes a story of love, creativity, and connection that persists even in the face of forgetting. How It Began "Little camera," Irene said, "I tell you things I didnʼt even know I knew." In 1999, the incomparable Cuban-American dramatist Maria "call me Irene" Fornes agreed to meet a young aspiring writer (director Michelle Memran), to be interviewed for American Theatre magazine. After a six-hour lunch, most of the interview questions remained unanswered but their friendship had begun.
