I could list the many actions we completed in 2013, especially those relating to the defense of net neutrality against constant global control and surveillance attempts. This is not, however, what I want to talk about, as in the following pages you will find plenty of material on the progress made by LACNIC in preserving the balance of the regional and global Internet ecosystem. Along with other entities, we formally assumed stewardship of the IANA functions for Internet number resources, which until the month of September were performed by the United States Department of Commerce. On September 30, during the LACNIC 26 closing ceremony in San Jose, Costa Rica, we had the pleasure of announcing the conclusion of the IANA functions' stewardship transition process and the beginning of a new model under which this responsibility is now in the hands of the Internet community.
