Blending the ghost stories of renowned horror writers Edgar Allan Poe and M.R. James with their own slice of Victorian Gothic, Mappa Mundi return with tales to chill the soul.

Elements from Poe’s classic stories - the beating pulse of The Tell Tale Heart, the ghoulish clowning of Hop-Frog and the terror of The Raven and The Black Cat - together with celebrated ghost writer M.R. James’ ghoulish fables - A Warning to the Curious, The Mezzotint and Whistle and I’ll Come To You My Lad - form the basis of a compendium of terrifying tales. These tales are linked by a Victorian photographer obsessed by death, with his own demons to exorcise come the strike of midnight. Full of haunting imagery from the Victorian era, Still Life is a celebration of 19th Century horror, given a deliciously dark Mappa Mundi twist.

Wrth asio straeon ysbrydion yr awduron arswyd enwog Edgar Allen Poe a M.R. James gyda’u hystyriaeth bersonol ar gothig oes Fictoria, mae Mappa Mundi yn dychwelyd gyda straeon i fferru’r enaid. Yn llawn delweddau brawychus o oes Fictoria, mae Still Life yn ddathliad o arswyd y 19eg ganrif, gyda thriniaeth dywyll ddrygionus Mappa Mundi.

A Classic Theatre Production WAITING FOR GODOT By Samuel Beckett

A country road. A tree. Evening. Vladimir and Estragon meet as dusk approaches. Estragon tries to remove his boot. Vladimir examines his hat. A conversation begins, a joke is interrupted. A carrot is eaten. The two men quarrel, then embrace. Unannounced, two eccentric travellers arrive. Seemingly master and servant, one stands weighed down at the end of a long rope, the other carries a whip. So begins Samuel Beckett’s 60-year-old masterpiece Waiting for Godot, a ground- breaking, anarchic meditation on the meaning of life and death. Part allegory, part burlesque, Beckett’s unique, timeless play moves seamlessly between absurdist comic sketch and captivating philosophical drama. Campwaith 60 mlwydd oed Samuel Beckett, mae ‘Waiting for Godot’ yn torri tir newydd mewn drama myfyrdod anarchaidd, yn trafod bywyd a marwolaeth.

NATIONAL DANCE COMPANY WALES

National Dance Company Wales brings together three unique pieces of dance created by the very best European choreographers.

NDCWales presents the world premiere of A Mighty Wind, by Jeroen Verbruggen, one of Europe’s most exciting choreographers. This high energy, vibrant piece captures the intensity of nature’s elements during a storm, set against the power generated by an alternative rock music concert. The rousing sounds of Ravel’s Bolero drives Johan Inger’s delightful Walking Mad along a colourful and theatrical dance journey. The dancers play and dance around a moving wall that adds a surprising presence on stage. It’s funny, with bags of character and packs a mighty emotional punch.

Alexander Ekman’s Tuplet, is a witty and high octane exploration of the simple notion of rhythm. The dancers’ breath and bodies create a powerful drumming soundtrack, combined with pounding electronic accompaniment, as well as the familiar and evocative jazz sounds of ‘Fly me to the Moon’. This fierce physicality combines with joyful, carefree dance that really shows off the personality and virtuosity of the dancers. These three pieces work together to create a fantastic and enjoyable evening for dance lovers to get their teeth into.

The Schools Interactive Matinee is a superb opportunity for children to join in on stage with the dancers and there will be a question and answer session at the end of the performance. The matinee will only feature one dance from the tour repertoire.

SIMON WESTON My Life, My Story

It was the conflict of a generation and one that many will never forget. On the second of April 1982 Argentina invaded the Falklands Islands with the aim of recapturing them through a claim that they had inherited the islands from Spain in the 1800s.

The Islands, which had been controlled by Great Britain for nearly 150 years, became a battle ground and the UK government were quick to defend both the Islands and its inhabitants. What was to follow saw the deaths of 655 Argentine Soldiers and 255 British Serviceman.

Among those who were sent to the conflict was Simon Weston OBE.

In one of the most horrific moments of the conflict the RFA Sir Galahad was bombed by two Argentine planes, aboard at the time was Simon.

This was a event which would change his life forever.

Eventually, and against the odds, Simon escaped the burning and buckled ship, but only after suffering 46 per cent burns to his body. Today he has become one of the most recognised faces of the conflict and for the first time ever Simon is taking to the stage to tell his story with no holds barred.

Guiding him from that fateful day to current times is David Fitzgerald, former Sky news anchor and close friend. There will be highs and lows; questions that only a friend as close as David could ask, with answers only Simon could give. From his unique perspective Simon will share shocking truths about the conflict, about the day the Sir Galahad was attacked and about the impact the event and its consequences have had. Simon Weston; My Life, My Story is a truly inspirational show about one man’s journey from the front line of war, being on the edge of death, to today being a happy and contented Father, Grandfather and national treasure.

ABERYSTWYTH ARTS CENTRE & JOIO PRESENT

BY ROGER WILLIAMS

A roller-coaster ride through Cardiff’s nightlife as gay man Lee breaks up with one lover and resolves never to fall in love again. All around him people are drinking too much, dancing until the early hours and getting it while they can.

But when Lee receives an invitation to a friend’s house-warming everything seems ripe for change, and it only takes seven hours, a bottle of vodka, and the devil on his shoulder for him to break his promise and fall back into the arms of a new admirer.

Saturday Night Forever follows Lee on a journey through the wreckage of past relationships and the early stages of a promising new love affair. For a short while life is sweet, but after every Saturday night comes the cold reality of Sunday morning, and as Lee cruelly discovers, nothing lasts forever. Touring with support from Arts Council Wales.

JOSH WIDDICOMBE WHAT DO I DO NOW?

Josh Widdicombe, that guy from the TV comedy shows with the curly hair, is back on the road with a brand new tour. Since he’s been away from stand-up, Josh has been working hard on other things but don’t worry, in his spare time he has found a lot of minor things to get annoyed about, and now he has a chance to talk about them on stage (in the form of jokes). If you have seen him before live or on TV and enjoyed yourself then this is the show for you.

If you didn’t like him then it probably isn’t.

Since he was last on tour Josh’s Channel 4 show The Last Leg has gone from strength to strength and been nominated for various awards including a British Comedy Award and a Broadcast Award, while finally winning one at the Royal Television Society Awards. He has also been seen on BBC2’s Mock the Week and QI, BBC1’s Live at the Apollo and Have I Got News for You and ITV1’s The Jonathan Ross Show, amongst other stuff. If it is only his voice you like then he is now the host of BBC5Live’s legendary Saturday morning sport show Fighting Talk and The Josh Widdicombe Show on Xfm. Most excitingly of all he has also written and starred in his own sitcom Josh which will be broadcast on BBC3 in autumn. To be honest, it is going to be a blessed relief to get back to the relaxing world of live stand-up.

WELSH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Pianist Anthony Hose Baritone Jeremy Huw Williams

The Welsh Chamber Orchestra was founded to fill the gap in the music making life of Wales between performances of solo and small chamber music ensembles and those of the symphony orchestra. Since its inception in 1986 it has performed with many of the world's greatest soloists, undertaken several European concert tours as well as performing throughout the UK. For many years it was resident chamber orchestra at the Swansea International Concert Series where its innovative policy of giving second performances of works by Welsh composers was highly successful. It has recorded numerous television programmes including a New York Film Festival, prize-winning Opera series. The orchestra's first commercial CD was a disc of works by William Mathias, a CD of works by Alun Hoddinott has just been released, and a further CD of Michael Tippett’s works will be issued shortly. A key part of the orchestra's artistic policy is to perform in North Wales, which is relatively ill-served in performances of orchestral music compared to other parts of the country. The orchestra is proud to be associated with the William Mathias Centre in Caernarfon.
