ABSTRACT Three contributions are made to the generation of Roman printed fonts: a descriptive model, a generating program, CSD, and a line setting program, FRANCE. The model is based on a linguistic study of the con- sistency of Roman printed characters. Characters are de- composed into primitives. To represent a letter by a char- acter, one uses a specific combination of primitives; a grammar is given, which governs these combinations within the Roman style. The repeated use of the same drawing to represent a primitive in more than one combination differ- entiates the characters of a font from other fonts; further- more, parameters are used to specify the drawings and there exist relationships among the parameters for the different drawings of a font. Related parameters are gathered into families; global transformations for each of the families well describe elementary operations on fonts like boldening, size variations, etc. This parametric description is used by CSD to effec- tively generate high quality upper and lower case characters for body text fonts, from a very compact code (140 bits per character on the average). Reproductions of four classic fonts are given. An elementary operation on a font is specified with less than one bit per character; three ex- amples are given on one font: italicization, boldening, and size variation. One of the fonts generated with CSD is recoded with FRANCE, to test an intraword spacing algorithm. Spacing is based on pairs of adjacent characters rather than individual characters. FRANCE is able to generate a digitized version of a line of text in one sweep over the scan lines, in a highly parallel way. Thesis Supervisor: William F. However, the two basic limits to storing remain, in their principle, unchanged. On the one hand, the listing of the data eventually fills any available space; on the other hand, too much coding of it will take away its uniqueness. This is specially true of data which is multi-dimensional in nature (for example what man sees). Ideally, both con- straints would operate at the same time. Good systems exist to record fields of view; they perform a minimal encoding task in the sense that they do not try to classify nor recog- nize what is seen: cameras, analog to digital scanners, with or without general processing of the data like line per line encoding. Yet space, for these systems is a more stringent condition than loss of identity. On the other hand, systems which describe simple geometric shapes in their field of view by labeling them, much as humans do, have been proven successful. For these simple scenes, compression ratios are great; but, for more complicated scenes, failure to capture the identity is a problem. The ultimate goal of this work is to further study how simplicity and variety can be com- bined using a computer, thereby achieving a balance between the two limits of storing. -8- The data which has inspired this thesis is made up of the universe of Western type fonts.1 The reader foreign to it may want to learn some terminology in [1], get further acquainted with the art of typography in [2], and eventually sample this new world in [3]. In fact, its variety is too great to be covered in one attempt and the present work has been restricted to Roman printed fonts, especially those which are used to set text matter. This choice is restric- tive indeed, yet it retains the fonts which are the closest to the model, the formal inscriptions carved on the monuments during the Roman Empire. It is also these fonts which make the bulk of what is read every day in the Western world, be it in newspapers, magazines, or books, and which inspire the larger set of display types. This smaller world has been explored and described with many rules and little freedom, or so it seems; and the artist's fancy is rich enough to break any of those rules. Yet the true use of rules and laws is not to stifle variety, which will never be achieved that way: it is to tell the surprising facts from the ordinary ones. The shadows may reveal as much as the light of what is illuminated. What is highlighted in this thesis is the basic structure of this 1 Should the reader like to replace the Western fonts in the larger world of fonts, he may refer to E. M. In chapter II, and again in chapter V, a model is presented which has the power to generate good approximations for the members of the set, old and new, under a very compact, man-oriented notation. The generation is actually carried out in chapter III by a computer program which can draw the fonts from their definition under this notation. In chapter IV the actual printing process is in- vestigated with a focus on the spacing of characters on a line of type. Both cases develop a data base which could help the typographer to manipulate fonts digitally from their creation to their final use. The thesis has not been written for any particular audience; rather it is oriented towards its object: the generation of Roman printed fonts.

I had to insert all the mathematics by hand (see Figure 1, original size 7 1/2 by 10 inches), and in the last car- bon copy that was about all that was legible.

    Early steps in computer typesetting in the 1960s Jonathan Seybold, September 2018 1961–1964 Michael Barnett’s “Experiments in Typesetting” In 1961, Michael Barnett, an associate professor at MIT wrote a computer program that could produce punched paper tape output to drive a phototypesetting machine. He used this to produce the “Tail” from Alice in Wonderland, and a phototypeset press release. These were the first documents that were phototypeset from output generated by a computer. In 1962 Barnett received a research grant to continue this experiments. This lead to development of the PC6 system, which was used to produce a variety of reports, pamphlets and other publications in late 1963 and early 1964.1 Hardware: IBM 709/90 computer and a Photon 560 phototypesetter. Software: Written in Fortran, with a few routines written in FAP (Fortran Assembler). Written for a specific Photon 560 set-up. Typefonts were identified by disk position and row number. The TYPRINT program for text output composed text to fit a predefined page width and depth. Lines were broken after the last complete word that would fit on that line. There was no attempt at hyphenation. Pages were arbitrarily broken after the last line that would fit on the page. Special commands could be embedded in the text to tie text elements together. When it encountered these, the program would simply make the page as long as necessary to accommodate all of the text in the “no break” area. Helvetica!” Weight – the weight of a typeface is determined by the thickness of the character outlines relative to their height (Hairline, Thin, Ultra-light, Extra-light, Light, Book, Regular, Roman, Medium, Demi-bold, Semi-bold, Bold, Extra-bold, Heavy, Black, Extra-black, Ultra-black). Point Size – the size of the typeface (12pt, 14pt, 18pt). Points are the standard until of typographic measurement. 12 points = 1 pica, 6 picas = 72 points = 1 inch. (Example right) A general rule is that body copy should never go below 10pt and captions should never be less than 8pt. Leading – or line spacing is the spacing between lines of type. In metal type composition, actual pieces of lead were inserted between lines of type on the printing press to create line spacing.

By the time American Type Founders (ATF) was formed in 1892, more than 50 different sans serif faces were offered by the major American type suppliers. First Franklin Designs The Franklin Gothic™ typeface was the third in a series of sans serif faces designed after ATF was founded. In the early 1900s, Morris Fuller Benton, who was in charge of typeface development for ATF at the time, began to create the type designs that would influence American type design for more than 40 years. Globe Gothic was his first sans serif design, which was followed shortly thereafter by Alternate Gothic. Around 1902, Franklin Gothic was cut, although it was not released as a font of metal type until 1905. As he designed Franklin Gothic, Benton was likely influenced by the earlier sans serif designs released in Germany. Berthold had issued the Akzidenz Grotesk® series of typefaces (later known to American printers as “Standard”) in 1898. Akzidenz Grotesk inspired the cutting of Reform Grotesk by the Stempel foundry of Frankfurt in 1903, and the Venus™ series of typefaces by the Bauer foundry, also of Frankfurt, in 1907. A Small Family At first, Benton drew only a single roman design for Franklin Gothic. However, this typeface caught the imagination of printers of the time, and ATF was compelled to add more variants to make a small type family.
