Muslim Response to “To be a Pilgrim” Jerusha Tanner Lamptey, Union Theological Seminary Bismillah al-rahman al-rahim. In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I must begin this evening by expressing my sincere gratitude for the invitation to participate in tonight’s discussion and to hopefully contribute a few additional insights to the many that have already been proffered by Fr. Ryan and Dr. Mintz. In preparation for tonight’s conversation, I found myself, as I oft do, preparing for salat, or the ritual Islamic prayer. This preparation includes performing purification and formulating proper intention, among other things. However, it was not these aspects of my preparation that caught my attention on this occasion. Rather, my attention was directed to another minor yet habitual action I perform with every prayer, a minor adjustment of the directional orientation of the rug on which I pray. I don’t take out a compass and figure the direction technically, but I always move the rug somewhat…and I fancy (perhaps naively) that I can tell when it has been moved into the correct alignment. This rug, of course, faces in the direction of Mecca and the Ka’ba, the site of the annual hajj pilgrimage. And there is a connection with that site that penetrates and pulsates throughout the ritual of prayer and throughout the lives of Muslims. The directional orientation to the Ka’ba is in fact a spiritual and symbolic orientation that shapes understandings of human existence in the world and human relation to God. In my brief remarks tonight, I would like to draw attention to this spiritual and symbolic orientation, building upon Fr. -

Pre-Islamic Arabia The Nomadic Tribes of Arabia The nomadic pastoralist Bedouin tribes inhabited the Arabian Peninsula before the rise of Islam around 700 CE. Among the most prominent civilizations were Thamud, which arose around 3000 BCE and lasted to about 300 CE, and Dilmun, which arose around the end of the fourth millennium and lasted to about 600 CE. -

Muslim Women’s Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond This book investigates female Muslims pilgrimage practices and how these relate to women’s mobility, social relations, identities, and the power struc- tures that shape women’s lives. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and regional expertise, it offers in-depth investigation of the gendered dimensions of Muslim pilgrimage and the life-worlds of female pilgrims. With a variety of case studies, the contributors explore the expe- riences of female pilgrims to Mecca and other pilgrimage sites, and how these are embedded in historical and current contexts of globalisation and transnational mobility. This volume will be relevant to a broad audience of researchers across pilgrimage, gender, religious, and Islamic studies. Marjo Buitelaar is an anthropologist and Professor of Contemporary Islam at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi THE RISE OF ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS-POLITICAL MOVEMENTS IN INDONESIA The Background, Present Situation and Future1 Hamid Fahmy Zarkasyi The Institute for Islamic Studies of Darussalam, Gontor Ponorogo, Indonesia Abstract: This paper traces the roots of the emergence of Islamic religious and political movements in Indonesia especially during and after their depoliticization during the New Order regime. There were two important impacts of the depoliticization, first, the emergence of various study groups and student organizations in university campuses. Second, the emergence of Islamic political parties after the fall of Suharto. In addition, political freedom after long oppression also helped create religious groups both radical on the one hand and liberal on the other. These radical and liberal groups were not only intellectual movements but also social and political in nature. Although the present confrontation between liberal and moderate Muslims could lead to serious conflict in the future, and would put the democratic atmosphere at risk, the role of the majority of the moderates remains decisive in determining the course of Islam and politics in Indonesia. Keywords: Islamic religious-political movement, liberal Islam, non-liberal Indonesian Muslims. Introduction The rise of Islamic political parties and Islamic religious movements after the fall of Suharto was not abrupt in manner. Chapters on the Prophetic Visitation1 ‘Allamah Zafar Ahmad al-‘Uthmani Translation by Zameelur Rahman Chapter on Visiting the Grave of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) before or after Hajj2 1. Narrated from Musa ibn Hilal al-‘Abdi from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar from Nafi‘ from Ibn ‘Umar (Allah, Exalted is He, be pleased with them), he said: Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ِ َم ْن َزاَر قَ ْبِري َوَجبَ ْت لَهُ َشَفا َعتي “Whoever visits my grave, my intercession becomes necessary for him.” Al-Daraqutni transmitted it. His narrations agree in a number of reliable copies of his Sunan and likewise in other than the Sunan from [al-Qadi al- Husayn ibn Isma‘il] al-Mahamili [with his chain] from ‘Ubayd Allah [ibn ‘Umar] in the diminutive (musaghghar) [i.e. ‘Ubayd Allah and not ‘Abd Allah].3 Al-Bayhaqi narrated it from other than al-Mahamili through the route of Muhammad ibn Zanjawayh al-Qushayri: ‘Ubayd ibn Muhammad ibn al- Qasim ibn Abi Maryam al-Warraq narrated to us: Musa ibn Hilal al-‘Abdi narrated to us from ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar from Nafi from ‘Ibn ‘Umar (Allah, Exalted is He, be pleased with them) the hadith. Thus, the narration of ‘Ubayd ibn Muhammad, who is trustworthy, is established in the diminutive [i.e. with ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar and not ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar]. 1 A note preceding this section says: “From the wondrous fortunes is the drafting of the chapter of visitation [from I‘la’ al-Sunan] and its completion a year and some months before the completion of the chapters of Hajj in the illuminated [city of] Madinah, at the house of my master, our intimate guardian [Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri], facing the fragrant Rawdah and the illuminated prophetic mosque; and the writing of the last pages of it in the presence of the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) facing him while standing in front him, fearful and apprehensive of his gaze, with trembling hands due to recalling his eminence and loftiness.
