(2009),24(1-3): 2 In memoriam JEAN-PIERRE MAELFAIT Kortrijk 01/06/1951 Gent 06/02/2009 Jean-Pierre Maelfait is ons ontvallen op 6 februari van dit jaar. We brengen hulde aan een man die veel gegeven heeft voor de arachnologie in het algemeen en meer specifiek voor onze vereniging. Jean-Pierre is altijd een belangrijke pion geweest in het bestaan van ARABEL. Hij was medestichter van de “Werkgroep ARABEL” in 1976 en op zijn aanraden werd gestart met het publiceren van de “Nieuwsbrief” in 1986, het jaar waarin ook ARABEL een officiële vzw werd. Hij is eindredacteur van de “Nieuwsbrief” geweest van 1990 tot en met 2002. Sinds het ontstaan van onze vereniging is Jean-Pierre achtereenvolgens penningmeester geweest van 1986 tot en met 1989, ondervoorzitter van 1990 tot en met 1995 om uiteindelijk voorzitter te worden van 1996 tot en met 1999. Pas in 2003 gaf hij zijn fakkel als bestuurslid over aan de “jeugd”. Dit afscheid is des te erger omdat Jean- Pierre er na 6 jaar afwezigheid terug een lap ging op geven, door opnieuw bestuurslid te worden in 2009 en aldus verkozen werd als Secretaris. Alle artikels in dit nummer opgenomen worden naar hem opgedragen. Jean-Pierre Maelfait nous a quitté le 6 février de cette année. Nous rendons hommage à un homme qui a beaucoup donné dans sa vie pour l’arachnologie en général et plus particulièrement pour Arabel. Jean-Pierre a toujours été un pion important dans la vie de notre Société. -

Garwood1, Jason A. Dunlop2, Gonzalo Giribet3 & Mark D. Sutton1 Harvestmen, the third most-diverse arachnid order, are an ancient group found on all continental landmasses, except Antarctica. However, a terrestrial mode of life and leathery, poorly mineralized exoskeleton makes preservation unlikely, and their fossil record is limited. The few Palaeozoic species discovered to date appear surprisingly modern, but are too poorly preserved to allow unequivocal taxonomic placement. Here, we use high-resolution X-ray micro-tomography to describe two new harvestmen from the Carboniferous (~305 Myr) of France. The resulting computer models allow the first phylogenetic analysis of any Palaeozoic Opiliones, explicitly resolving both specimens as members of different extant lineages, and providing corroboration for molecular estimates of an early Palaeozoic radiation within the order. Furthermore, remarkable similarities between these fossils and extant harvestmen implies extensive morphological stasis in the order. Department of Biology, Imperial College at Silwood Park, Ascot, Berkshire, SL5 7PY, U.K. August 1999 1 THESIS ABSTRACT Populations of the sycamore aphid Drepanosiphum platanoidis Schrank (Homoptera: Aphididae) have been shown to undergo regular two-year cycles. It is thought this phenomenon is caused by an inverse seasonal relationship in abundance operating between spring and autumn of each year. It has been hypothesised that the underlying mechanism of this process is due to a plant factor, intra-specific competition between aphids, or a combination of the two. This thesis examines the population dynamics and the life-history characteristics of D. platanoidis, with an emphasis on elucidating the factors involved in driving the dynamics of the aphid population, especially the role of bottom-up forces. Manipulating host plant quality with different levels of aphids in the early part of the year, showed that there was a contrast in aphid performance (e.g. duration of nymphal development, reproductive duration and output) between the first (spring) and the third (autumn) aphid generations. This indicated that aphid infestation history had the capacity to modify host plant nutritional quality through the year. However, generalist predators were not key regulators of aphid abundance during the year, while the specialist parasitoids showed a tightly bound relationship to its prey. The effect of a fungal endophyte infecting the host plant generally showed a neutral effect on post-aestivation aphid dynamics and the degree of parasitism in autumn. -
Invertebrates of Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve (Fsc) and Prawle Point (National Trust)

CLARK AND JANET BECCALONI Department of Life Sciences, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD. In 2014 the Natural History Museum, London organised a field trip to Slapton. These field notes report on the trip, giving details of methodology, the species collected and those of notable status. INTRODUCTION OBjectives A field trip to Slapton was organised, funded and undertaken by the Natural History Museum, London (NHM) in July 2014. The main objective was to acquire tissues of UK invertebrates for the Molecular Collections Facility (MCF) at the NHM. The other objectives were to: 1. Acquire specimens of hitherto under-represented species in the NHM collection; 2. Provide UK invertebrate records for the Field Studies Council (FSC), local wildlife trusts, Natural England, the National Trust and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway; 3. Develop a partnership between these organisations and the NHM; 4. Publish records of new/under-recorded species for the area in Field Studies (the publication of the FSC). Background to the NHM collections The NHM is home to over 80 million specimens and objects. The Museum uses best practice in curating and preserving specimens for perpetuity. In 2012 the Molecular Collections Facilities (MCF) was opened at the NHM. The MCF houses a variety of material including botanical, entomological and zoological tissues in state-of-the-art freezers ranging in temperature from -20ºC and -80ºC to -150ºC (Figs. 1). As well as tissues, a genomic DNA collection is also being developed. -

In tropical rain forests, harvestmen assemblages are extremely diverse, with richness often exceeding 25 species. In the neotropics, there are published accounts of harvestmen faunas in South America rainforests (especially Amazonia), but relatively little is known about the community ecology of harvestmen in tropical forests of Central America. In this paper, we provide the first insights into the diverse assemblage of harvestmen inhabiting a wet forest at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. Over five field seasons, we recorded 38 species. During our 2009 field season, we examined variation in species abundance, richness, and composition between adjacent successional forests (young secondary, mature secondary, and primary forests) as well as between distinct habitats (ground/litter layer and shrub/tree layer). -

SPINNEN EN HOOIWAGENS IN ZAANSTAD 1) Ron van ’t Veer & Jinze Noordijk (European Invertebrate Survey – Nederland) Spinnen, hooiwagens, mijten en pseudoschorpioenen behoren tot de spinachtigen. Van de landbewonende spinachtigen is weinig bekend uit Zaanstad en alleen van spinnen en hooiwagens bestaan voldoende gegevens om er iets zinvols over te schrijven. Van de spinachtigen vallen de spinnen wel het meest op door hun zichtbaarheid en grote verscheidenheid aan soorten. Spinnen komen in allerlei leefgebieden voor en vertonen een sterke specialisatie; zo zijn er bijvoorbeeld typische soorten van moerassen, bossen, kaal zand, maar ook van binnenshuis. Hooiwagens zijn overal te vinden waar wat beschutting tegen uitdroging aanwezig is, zoals in plantenruigtes, de strooisellaag of aan de schaduwkant van boomstammen of muren. Hier geven we een overzicht van wat we weten van de soortensamenstelling van deze twee groepen. Biodiversiteit In Zaanstad zijn in totaal 132 spinnensoorten aangetroffen van de ruim 600 met zekerheid in ons land voorkomende soorten. Van de spinnen zijn inventarisatiegegevens aanwezig vanaf de jaren 1980. Van de hooiwagens hebben de eerste en enige inventarisaties plaatsgevonden in 2007 en 2009. Spinnen - Araneae De spinnen zijn waargenomen tijdens verschillende veldinventarisaties of als losse waarnemingen. De gehele gemeente is nooit systematisch onderzocht op spinnen en leefgebieden als stadsparken, droge bosschages en graslanden (inclusief bermen) zijn tot nu toe onderbemonsterd gebleven.
