David Samuel Anthony Lord VC (1913 – 1944) Flight Lieutenant David Samuel Anthony Lord VC (1913 – 1944) Tijdens operatie Market Garden in 1944 en de gevechten rond Arnhem, is Wie? Royal Air Force (RAF) piloot Fl.Lt. David Lord neergestort. Zeven bemanningsleden inclusief hijzelf zijn daarbij om het leven gekomen. Eén man overleefde. Vele vliegers hebben tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog op tal van manieren het leven gelaten. Het verhaal van Lord is uitzonderlijk omdat hem – postuum – vanwege zijn ongekende moed de hoogste Britse militaire onderscheiding is toegekend: het Victoria Cross. Dit is een decoratie die slechts enkele militairen ontvangen. Lord had opdracht om met zijn Dakota de Britse 1st Airborne Division bij Waarom? Arnhem te bevoorraden. Deze door de Duitsers ingesloten parachutisten waren geheel afhankelijk van uit vliegtuigen afgeworpen voorraad. Het toestel van Lord was al door de Duitsers in brand geschoten voor het Arnhem bereikte. Er waren voor de bemanning mogelijkheden om een noodlanding te maken of om zich per parachute te redden. Maar Lord besloot met zijn brandende toestel door te vliegen in een uiterste poging de Britse troepen bij Arnhem te voorzien van de hoognodige voorraden. Dit heeft hij op heldhaftige wijze uitgevoerd. Maar direct hierna is zijn toestel neergestort… Voor zijn bijdrage in het heetst van de strijd heeft Lord in Nederland echter nooit enige eer ontvangen. Er is - behalve zijn grafsteen op de militaire begraafplaats te Oosterbeek - niets te vinden dat aan hem herinnert. Door het plaatsen van een monument wordt aan een openstaande ereschuld voldaan. Dit moet hem recht doen en zijn daad van zelfopoffering ten behoeve van anderen aan de vergetelheid ontrukken. De locatie waar het toestel is gecrasht is bekend. Het betreft een natuurgebied langs de Duitse kampweg bij Wolfheze dat in beheer is van de Stichting Natuurmonumenten. Omdat het in september 2019 75 jaar geleden is dat operatie Market Garden Wanneer? plaatsvond wordt deze uitgebreid herdacht. Verschillende veteranen en vele nabestaanden van slachtoffers zullen bij herdenkingen aanwezig zijn. Het is de bedoeling om op 19 september een passend monument voor Lord en zijn bemanning te onthullen. Op die dag is het exact 75 jaar geleden dat de crash van Lord’s Dakota plaats vond. Het monument zal bestaan uit een grote veldkei, passend bij het Veluwse landschap, met daarop een decoratief vorm gegeven metalen plaat met bronzen ornament en een tekst met onder andere de namen van de zeven omgekomen bemanningsleden. Intussen wordt onderzoek gedaan naar nabestaanden van de bemanningsleden van het toestel. Het zou voor deze mensen een belangrijke blijk van waardering zijn wanneer een gesneuveld familielid alsnog wordt geëerd met een monument. De gemeente Renkum en de Stichting Natuurmonumenten hebben officieel toestemming gegeven voor het plaatsen van dit gedenkteken en de nodige faciliteiten aangeboden. Ook andere Nederlandse en Britse organisaties steunen dit initiatief. Nu toestemming en ondersteuning rond zijn, is het noodzakelijk de nodige financiële middelen te verkrijgen om het plan te realiseren. Het gaat om een bedrag van ca € 3000,-. Bij deze wil ondergetekende en initiatiefnemer van dit project in Wat is mijn vraag? samenwerking met de Market Garden Foundation u vriendelijk verzoeken een bijdrage te leveren voor het monument van Victoria Cross-drager RAF Flight Lieutenant David Lord.     ANNUAL REPORT TOWN OF ALFRED, MAINE FOR FISCAL YEAR JULY 2017 – JUNE 2018 FOR FISCAL YEAR JULY 2017 – JUNE 2018 DEDICATION David Lord This year’s town report is dedicated to David Lord. The Alfred Fire and Rescue Department could not be more proud of this. David Lord became the Fire Chief in Alfred in 2003 and replaced Chief James Gerrish. The Fire Department at that time consisted of one full time employee and call force/volunteer firefighters. Today in 2018 we are a department of 47call force members, one full time employee and a Per-Diem (Part Time Employee) during the day. In the time between 2003 and 2018 the department has seen many changes. Many of them implemented and overseen by Chief David Lord. Joining in 1988 David Lord quickly became a well-respected and dedicated member of the Alfred Fire Department rising from Fire Fighter to Lieutenant in 1991, Captain in 1993, Assistant Chief in 1996 and to Fire Chief in 2003. David Lord currently is assigned to the Alfred Fire Department in his “favorite role, Fire Fighter”, in his words. We are extremely grateful to hold onto his expertise and dedication even longer into his retirement. Dedication is a word commonly associated with Chief Lord. Chief Lord has dedicated more hours to Alfred than can even be counted. We have tried to document these hours and they exceed well over the monetary value of his position. From fixing trucks, fixing our breathing apparatus, to his presence on the emergency scene Chief Lord was there. He was there in the Mother’s Day storm in 2005 filling sandbags alongside town’s people and firefighters alike.
