Having recently built an enclosure around a natural lake and forest, the Polar Bear Habitat is the largest one of its kind in the world, and can now reach new heights in research and behavioural understanding for polar bears.

The Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders Snowmobile Museum is the first of its kind and now open in its new, bigger and better digs adjacent to the Welcome Centre of the Polar Bear Habitat. Admission is free with your paid entrance to the Polar Bear Habitat. The Snowmobile Museum’s exhibit traces the rich journey of Cochrane’s snowmobile history from the 1950’s to present day. The museum showcases close to 100 vintage sleds and includes an archive of historic photographs and unique memorabilia. The Museum and the Vintage Riders also play host to their “Annual Drag Races” the second week of February on Lake Commando and a ‘Vintage’ snowmobile ride the first weekend in March with sleds and riders from near and far to showcase their vintage sleds. Take a trip back in time to the early 1900’s, when Cochrane was being settled. Our Heritage Village, just steps away from the Polar Bear Habitat Learning Centre, has a picturesque main street to explore. Here you will find a train station, a general store, butcher shop, doctor’s office, blacksmith’s shop, fire station and school house. We even have a Trapper’s Cabin facing the new polar bear lake enclosure. Come and enjoy the ‘Festival of Lights’ at the Heritage Village as part of the Christmas season. Warm up by the bonfire with hot chocolate, enjoy carolling and a visit from the ‘other Big Guy’ from the North Pole! GARDINER FERRY CASSIOPEIA IV Worth a visit! The Cassiopeia IV is the northernmost ferry service operating 9 months of the year, 24 hours a day free of charge. It is the last winch driven cable ferry operating in Canada and is located 32 km north of Cochrane on Hwy#579 crossing the Abitibi River. The park encompasses a downtown beach, 2.2km of walking trails, an LAKE COMMANDO entertainment facility and a whole lot of bustling activities! The supervised beach and charcoal barbecues are favourites in the summer months. 2019-2020 COCHRANE 11 POWERSPORTS ENTHUSIASTS WELCOMED! AVENTURE NORD Cochrane is a Francophone host community on the Aventure Nord trail system. It was developed as a series of trails and snowparks that encompass all four seasons: motorcycle and ATV riding in the spring, summer and fall, and snowmobiling in winter. Individual trails and snowparks have been mapped, thanks to the knowledge of local clubs and experts, as a connected trail and park system with the five main communities who participate in the promotion of the system: Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing, Hearst, and Dubreuilville. COCHRANE’S WINTER CARNIVAL

Acclaimed as the oldest of Ontario’s winter carnivals and the largest in Northern Ontario, this ten-day festival is a great way to get outside, blow the dust off and enjoy Northern Ontario’s winter season! There is something for every one in the 80 events that take place during carnival – a smash up derby, a fishing derby, dances, hockey tournaments, the Polar Bear dip, vintage snowmobile races and much more. There are many reasons people ride the Polar Bear Express. For some it’s a commuter train, between the remote communities of the north and highway access to the south. For the train buffs, it’s a reminder of how integral the railroad and train travel were to building Canada from sea to sea to sea. For some, it’s the historical value of the fur trade - seeing the mighty rivers that were the roadways to James Bay. For the intrepid paddlers, it is the last leg of their carefully planned canoe trip. And for the rest, it’s a journey to escape the hustle and bustle, put your feet up and your phone away and enjoy the flora and fauna of the James Bay lowlands, and rhythmic sounds of the train. Serving as both a passenger and freight train, the Polar Bear Express has represented the lifeline of the lower James Bay region since its introduction in 1964.
