Volunteers at the not-for-profit George Cross Falcons Community Centre have told how they first thought the intrusion was "practical joke", before quickly realising the disguised duo's presence was something more sinister. About eight people were inside the community centre - preparing for a weekly seniors' lunch event - when two masked men entered via a door off Lake Avenue about 8.30am. "We were all doing our Monday morning chores ... we were buttering bread, making coffees and then two men walked in," office worker and volunteer Elizabeth Walker said. "We thought it was a joke. We really thought it was a practical joke because they came in, they were very composed and they were very softly spoken and that's why we didn't register what they were really here for." Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on 7th September 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. At a young age he learned to play guitar, fiddle and piano. He released only three albums during his short lifetime, before his untimely death in an airplane crash that fateful “day the music died”, 3rd February 1959. However, he had been a prolific writer and a couple of albums consisting of unreleased material and demo recordings were issued posthumously. Buddy Holly was one of the inaugural inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, together with The Everly Brothers. The songs are as performed in principal recordings (or demos) by Buddy Holly alone and/or with The Crickets plus those released by other artistes where Buddy was involved. Additionally included, for diehard collectors of all things Holly, are songs where lyrics refer to Buddy Holly or his songs. The bracketed date following the title denotes the year of the initial recording. Where it was difficult to detect precisely what is being sung, queries/gaps or alternative suggestions are included in blue and/or indicated by ??. Most successful as a songwriter, he is regarded as one of the founding fathers of swamp pop. His own vocal style was laidback and drawling. His biggest successes were songs other artists covered, such as ‘See You Later Alligator’ by Bill Haley & His Comets; ‘Walking To New Orleans’ by Fats Domino – with whom he recorded a duet of the same song in the 1990s – and ‘(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do’ by Clarence “Frogman” Henry. It allowed him to live off the songwriting royalties for the rest of his life! Two other well-known compositions are ‘The Jealous Kind’, recorded by Joe Cocker, and ‘Tennessee Blues’ which Kris Kristofferson committed to record. Disenchanted with the music business, Bobby disappeared from the music scene in the mid-1960s but returned in 1972 with a self-titled album on the Bearsville label on which he was accompanied by Rick Danko and several other members of the Band and Dr John. Bobby later made a rare live appearance as a guest singer on stage at The Last Waltz, the 1976 farewell concert of the Band, although his contribution was cut from Martin Scorsese’s film of the event. Bobby Charles returned to the studio in later years, recording a European-only album called Clean Water in 1987.
