2 SOCIETY NOTICE BOARD

MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR

The Committee of ICRS would like to thank you for your continued support and send best wishes to you and your family for the coming Festive Season

Editor’s Comments: No sooner had I finished the November issue than I was straight onto the December issue. With only one week before heading down to the Warley Model Show and only two very long days after returning home, somehow this last issue of 2018 has been put together. This completes my 12th full year as Editor, that’s now 141 issues under my belt...and don’t I feel it !! Hopefully by the end of 2019 and my 13th year, the rapidly changing railway will have chalked up some major developments. It got me thinking however of my first 13 years of life which, being born in 1955, coincided with the introduction of the Modernisation Plan and diesels and ended with the demise of mainline steam, now that was a tumultuous period.

As you will see in EVENTS we have added a further 2 visits to WCR Carnforth to cater for demand. Hopefully one of the 5 dates will suit.

Membership Matters: New Members: (6) (* ex-members re-joined) (AFC – Additional Family Child, AFA – Additional Family Adult) Graham Ash (Huntingdon), Steve Dagsland (Potters Bar), Roy Davies (Hayling Island), Lindsay Parker (Kettering), John Pink (Chalfont St Peter), David Wilson (Peterborough) - a warm welcome to you all.

Obituary: Sadly we have lost Graham Darley from Spalding. Condolences go his family and friends.

Society Magazine TRACKS: TRACKS is distributed direct from the printers to members in a clear plastic wrapping with an address carrier sheet (reverse printed with a Renewal / Reminder form if appropriate). If any member fails to receive their copy after one week from the estimated delivery date below then please contact the Editor. For current info during the month refer to the TRACKS page of our website.

Next issue: Jan / Feb 2019 The latest date for articles / info is Thursday 31st January 2019 with delivery to members after Wednesday 13th February 2019 please check the TRACKS page on the website for date of posting from the printers

Magazine Contributors: Thanks to Chris Addoo, David Berg, Keith Blackman, Paul Clifton, Spencer Conquest, Danny Coyne, Peter Davis, Sean Davies, Neil Dix, David Doulton, Derek Everson, John Evans, Martin Evans, Iain Gardiner, James Holloway, Geoff Hope, Harold Hull, Colin James, Alan Jones, Steve Lord, Bradley Marshall, Ian McAlpine, Lawrence McCormick, Stuart Moore, Gervase Orton, Keith Partlow, Gareth Patterson, Colin Pidgeon, Derek Place, Colin Pottle, Toby Radziszewski, David Rice, Mike Rumens, Norman Smith, Dave Spencer, Graham Stockton, Carl Watson, Andy Woodcock & Trevor Roots. We are sorry if anyone has been missed. Photos not credited are by Trevor Roots.

EVENTS

All 2018 events organised, either confirmed or with provisional dates are shown below. Further events may be added in due course between issues of TRACKS so keep an eye on our website. PLEASE DO NOT try to book places for Members Only Visits with provisional dates shown by TBC until they are formalised or where the event though confirmed is many months in advance with details yet to be provided. Once they have, BOOKING OPEN will be shown alongside and a request will be made for you to book your place.

Please note that there is no excuse for booking then not notifying us you cannot then attend or have been delayed travelling on the day, genuine reasons apart. As with events where numbers need to be 3 accurately known by the hosts for a tour, food or room capacity this is not acceptable. We have tried to ease the official’s organising burden and saving you money in postage by allowing members to pay on the day, but this can be abused as it can be then seen as nothing to lose if you can’t be bothered to turn up. We still wish to save time and your money, so we will still try to allow payment on the day but for those who do not turn up and do not have the courtesy to contact us at the time or afterwards will not be welcome to book future tours without a non-returnable payment up front.

We dropped the idea of providing our bank details in TRACKS again as it seems no sooner than we publish these that we get spurious direct debits appear on the Society bank account. It happened before so if it is a member then that is extremely disappointing. If anyone wants to pay for anything up front then we can provide the bank details on request.

We cannot accept bookings by letter only, as there is no way to quickly contact you if plans have to be amended at short notice.

MEMBERS ONLY VISITS , Carnforth, 2019: BOOKING OPEN Sat 26th Jan FULL*, Sat 11th May FULL* & Sat 10th Aug LTD SPACES Due to demand two new dates have been added: Sat 22nd Jun & Sat 12th Oct (* Reserve lists in operation, from 2018 trips we did have late cancellations) Following our successful first visit in August 2018 we have organised 5 more for 2019. Again the places are limited to 30 but this is the right number having experienced it firsthand as it allowed questions to be asked of our guide and prevented getting in each other’s way...well not too much !! The cost is £20 payable on the day.

For the Jan visit and due to a shorter day meet at Carnforth Station at 10.35 for a 11.00 start. For the May, Jun, Aug & Oct visits meet at 11.25 for an 11.45 start. The tour will take approx. 3 to 3½ hours so if you are travelling by train please arrange your return accordingly. Needing to leave early caused problems but we got away with it once and we don’t want to risk future visits. There is paid parking at the station or free spaces can be found nearby.

Hi-viz, sturdy footwear and hard hat / bump cap must be worn. We have stocks of hi-viz vests and bump caps to purchase so contact Trevor for more details. All photos taken are for private use ONLY, no public display either online, in magazines or via social media.

Bookings will be taken as soon as you read this by whatever means, but it is not first come first served to be fair to those who missed out on the first two visits and the majority of members that will only read this a fortnight after those receiving a pdf version. As we found by trial and error for the first two visits we don’t need to do a lottery but the final list for each date will be juggled to allow everyone’s preference to be catered for so please be patient. There is plenty of time to make travel plans / book accommodation if needs be. Those on the waiting list will get first pick. If you can’t make any of the dates then you can be put on a reserve list either for cancellations or future visits. If you want to be on a reserve list for the 3 dates in the event of a cancellation then make sure you will be available. We actually had two cancellations for the Aug 2018 visit, one at a late stage and no-one on the reserve list was available for this, but it was filled by a new member.

Please apply to Tony Whitehead clearly stating your name, membership number, and importantly a contact telephone number and indicate your preference / availability for the dates shown. Email is best and he will respond asap. Email: [email protected] or by Tel: 07895 386777 but no calls after 20.45 in the evening please as he will be in bed early as he has to be up for work at 04.30 each morning. Best time to ring is after 18.30 weekdays and weekends. Though Tony does not have an answerphone he will return your tel. call promptly if your number is recorded as a missed call, so don’t panic. Only if you consistently have any trouble contacting Tony or he hasn’t responded after several days then in the last resort contact Trevor or Christine (details on page 2).

FL Basford Hall Yd / Crewe Arms Hotel – Sat 6th April 2019: BOOKING OPEN Our AGM is to be held again at the Crewe Arms Hotel following a visit to Basford Hall Yard. The trip around Basford Hall Yard starts at 13.00 from the Freightliner main office at the southern end of the access road. Please do not dawdle along the access road taking numbers as you will see them three times on the visit or on the way back. The cost for the visit is £15 payable on the day.

4 Please apply to Tony Whitehead as per details above for Carnforth. Hi-viz vests required

Following the visit there will be food at the Crewe Arms Hotel at 14.30 with the AGM starting whilst we eat at 14.45. We should be able to finish no later than 17.00 if not earlier, so trains can be caught. Please let the Secretary, Christine know if you are attending (contact details on page 2), independently of Tony, so that food can be organised. Merchandise can be bought at the AGM but for those not attending some will be available from Chris in the car at Basford Hall.

10 WARLEY NATIONAL MODEL RLY SHOW REPORT

Without the offer of a ‘free’ Society stand at the Warley National Model Rly Show at the NEC over the weekend of the 24-25th November 2018 we wouldn’t have attended. We didn’t do a rip roaring trade, though we picked up one new member, so we had time to talk to those members that made themselves known to us. There were several narrow gauge items from the real railway on display, though no std gauge loco this year and I will cover these in the next issue.

11 NEW BUILD STD GAUGE STEAM LOCOS

With the success of new build 4-6-2 60163 ‘TORNADO’ now 10 years old, I intended to start this series a while ago as I took photos of different projects around the country. With a couple of locos nearing completion and photos provided by other members a start was urgently required so this is the first article on new build steam locos that are in various stages of planning and construction around the UK. Whilst many are being built entirely from scratch as with 60163, others are using major components or are rebuilds using donor locos.

the nameplate DRC, 5th July 2014 (James Holloway)

Saint 4-6-0 2999 ‘LADY OF LEGEND’: This is an example of a rebuild of an existing loco. The GWR Saint class locomotives, introduced by G J Churchward in 1902, represented one of the most important steps forward in railway traction of the 20th century and had a profound influence on almost every aspect of subsequent steam locomotive development. With none surviving, the last being scrapped in 1953, the Great Western Society has long wanted to recreate a Saint, one of the few large mainline GWR locos not represented in the collection at DRC. So in 1974 4-6-0 1942 ‘MAINDY HALL’ was bought from Dai Woodhams Yard, Barry as a basis for reverse engineering a Saint. Ironically it was a Saint, 2925 that was re-engineered to create the first Hall. A straight frame variant of the class was settled on as the drop framed variant abounds in other classes. It also allows the loco to be turned out as a 4-4-2 Atlantic in the future as 191 ‘CHURCHWARD’.

4-6-0 2999 under construction DRC, above 25th February 2012

th left 12 March 2015

The project got underway in earnest in 2004 with a rolling chassis emerging in early 2005. The number 2999 was thought the most appropriate and memorable following after the original series. The name was decided by competition and followed the tradition of ‘Lady’ names carried by straight framed Saints.

12 The Great Western Society at the Didcot Railway Centre (DRC) held a ‘Black Saint’ weekend on 17- 18th November 2018. This was to display the near completed re-creation of Saint 4-6-0 2999 ‘LADY OF LEGEND’ in a black livery and for this one-off event it was blessed with sunshine. For the weekend it carried two different names and cabside numbers. The original plates for 2908 ‘LADY OF QUALITY’ on one side and replica plates for 2983 ‘REDGAUNTLET’ on the other. The locomotive was moved around the site by 08604 so it could be posed in various locations with other engines. 2999 will be painted in lined GWR green for its official launch, hopefully in the spring of 2019.

13 Patriot 4-6-0 5551 ‘THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR’: This is an example of an almost total new build to mainline standards with only minor parts coming from existing / scrapped locos. None of the original 52 LMS Patriot class 4-6-0 locos built under the reign of Henry Fowler survived, the last going in 1962. So in April 2008 a fundraising campaign began at the Llangollen Railway (LLR) to recreate a new parallel boilered example. Numbered 5551 it was decided to build it as a replica of the last in the class which was scrapped in October 1962 rather than give it the next number as was the case with 60163 ‘TORNADO’. With a plan to have the loco in steam for the WWI Armistice centenary in 2018 the frame plates were cut in March 2009. Also as all the original memorial locos that were named after the end of WWI had been scrapped including 5500 the first Patriot which carried the name ‘PATRIOT’ it was thought appropriate that the new loco should fulfil a role as the new National Memorial Engine to honour those who fought and died in WWI (see below). The name, decided by competition was to be ‘THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR’. Above the name is a crest which says IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN around a soldier looking at a battlefield cross. Originally the crest was that of the Royal British Legion but after believing the RBL had officially given their endorsement to use the crest in 2009 they withdrew their support in 2017. Though no financial support was asked for it is unfortunate that they took such a view and the crest had to be removed. With the 100th Anniversary of the ending of WWI intended to be the launch of 5551 it was at least fitting that the date was marked by the unveiling of the new crest and nameplate on an almost complete loco at the Crewe Heritage Centre on the 10th November 2018 by Simon Weston CBE. Due to the pressure of other work at the Llangollen workshop it was decided in October 2018 to move the final stages of the build to Crewe Heritage Centre (CQ) where it has had the trial fitting of the new boiler. Only the Fowler tender was missing, it being temporarily paired with one from Crab 13065 based at the ELR.

It was planned for the rides to be fare paying going a third of the way up the mountain but the loco was not compatible with the rack & pinion track hence why the loco could go no further than beyond the loco shed.

Radziszewski) The short set has spent the month mainly in the care of 37419 and 37716. However, 37716 was swapped out apparently with flats and replaced by 37405 fresh off RHTT duties and therefore very filthy. Unfortunately 37405 lasted two days before failing and the set is currently out of use in Norwich Yard.

Stone traffic has increased into Norwich yard. This month the traction has been 66080 on the 7th, 66098 on the 14th, 66063 on the 21st and th 66098 on the 28 . Work on preparing for the new signalling and rolling stock continues with the replacement of a section of previously disused sidings in Norwich Crown Point. New track has been laid and palisade fencing put up around it. Work is also progressing on the new sidings on the MNR but I have yet to see this.

The highlight of the month must be the arrival of the first of the Cl.755s with 66002 bringing 755405 from Ripple Lane on the 15th (see below). On the 29th 66001 arrived with 755407 (see NEW

34 DAYS OUT

All Line Rover, August 2018 by Spencer Conquest: Since joining the railway I’ve been doing an All Line Rail Rover each year, and 2018 was no exception with my base for the week being Sowerby Bridge, in Yorkshire. Last year I did my ALR in December and whilst I got some good pictures of locos in the snow it was freezing most of the week with some services cancelled. So this year I opted for a warm August! As with most Rovers I do, I try and keep each day flexible so I can take on board the latest gen from friends, and Realtime Trains (RTT) with regard to train movements and haulages, etc.

Thursday 16th: Anyway, with the popularity of sleepers for unusual haulage I decided to kick off my Rover with the 23.50 from Euston to Edinburgh. I was not disappointed with 92043 to Carstairs and then the split with 90048 (see right) from Carstairs to Edinburgh. 87002 bought the ECS into Euston. I managed a quick glimpse out of the window to see 37403 ready for the 1st Cumbrian Coast service of the day at KM. On arrival at Haymarket 68006 brought in the Glenrothes to Edinburgh service (see below) which was still running with 68007.

35

I then decided to spend the rest of the day at Carlisle and on arrival noted 57307 was station pilot / Thunderbird and remained so for the week (see above). 70813 was on the Chirk Kronospan timber as the 60s are now off to GBRf. In the middle road at 11.55 were 66303 + 88009 + 68002 running as OK05 Carlisle to Crewe running in the path of 6K05 (see below).

88007 also ran through on the Tesco Daventry - Mossend. 37425 was on the late running 12.08 2C52 Carlisle to Barrow, having broken down en route. Finally 90041 + 90044 were seen on the Daventry - Coatbridge service.

Friday 17th: After looking on RTT and based on the number of freights and specials I decided it would be worth spending the day at Doncaster. After arriving at Leeds my haulage to Doncaster was 90036. Stabled in the West Yard were the usual suspects, namely 67002, 66434 and 88010 awaiting their next turns of duty, with 08724 in Wabtec.

Next up was 56113 working the Low Row SB - Belmont Yard which arrived into platform 3A before shunting back to the stabling point outside the station.

47832 & 47826 working the King’s Cross - Edinburgh 1Z14 Northern Belle. Then 67015 + 90029 on 1Z90 special from King’s Cross to the Edinburgh Tattoo. Also seen was 802201 on a Darlington to Doncaster Carr test train at 11.45 (see above right).

Other locomotives working through the station the rest of the afternoon were, 66729, 66752, 66701, 66139, 66520, 800201 & 66431. 36 The highlight of the day for me though were ScotRail HSTs 43169 + 43183 having just been released from Wabtec and working to Haymarket as 5S04 (see 43183 below at 16.17, 43169 was featured on p76 in the October 2018 issue).

88010 having been stabled in the West Yard ran light engine through the station at 12.46 (see right)

Saturday 18th: Today it was a visit to Barrow Hill. The last time I was there in January they’d just started on the new sidings, so I was intrigued to see how they had got on. What I like most about Barrow Hill is the fact there is always something of interest at the depot with the following diesel and electrics seen: 02003, 03066, 07012, 08428/765/782/786/824/877/879, D4092, 20121, 20301/04/05/08/09/12/14, 20901/05, D5910, 26007, 27066, 37057/188/207/271/418, 45060/105/118, 55015/19, 81002, 82008, E3035, 85006, 89001, 0-4-0DM [2589], Austerity 0-6-0ST 68006 [3888].

Sunday 19th: I decided on Crewe Electric, Basford Hall & Gresty Bridge. Crewe Electric: With the hot weather the foliage/bushes obscured my view from the Skateboard park into Crewe Electric so had to view from McDonald’s and the industrial park which produced the usual suspects were 60055 and 90025, however at the end of the row behind 90025 was 92009 in DB red livery and can only assume it was a recent move, other electrics were: 90023/30/32/35/37 & 92035. Gresty Bridge: 20301/02/03, 37422-24, 57002, 57301/03/04/09, 68021/25/26, Basford Hall: 66598/605, 86605/22/32/39

Monday 20th: Keen to repeat the busy day I had at Doncaster on Friday I decided on another visit to Doncaster. I was hoping to get another ‘Skoda’ for haulage and aware that 90039 was working King’s Cross - Leeds services. On arrival at Leeds 91118 was my haulage to Doncaster but 90039 passed me outside the station so I jumped off at Wakefield Westgate and got 90039 to Doncaster. Locos seen at 37 Doncaster during the day were: 47826, 56078/113 (see above), 66004/099/158/520/599/727 (see below) / 728/729/744/752/777, 67015 plus IETs 800315 & 802201.

Tuesday 21st: With the news that 66999 had arrived in the UK and was at Longport I decided to spend Tuesday morning trying to see it. On arrival however, it was tucked inside the shed out of view. However, I managed to view the 56s on depot for attention, 56009 (see right), 56031/32/37 along with 08220.

As I was getting the 00.58 Aberdeen sleeper that night from Preston I decided, based on RTT, to go back to Carlisle for the afternoon and early evening. I was not disappointed as I managed to see the following in order, 37669, 66303, 66305, 37425, 68033, 68005, 66428, 86610, 86604 & 88007. Also 37669 was working the Lancaster summer service ecs to Carnforth with 4-6-0 45699 ‘GALATEA’ (see below and opposite top) whist 68033 & 68005 t&t the Barrow service.

38

Wednesday 22nd: It was then back to Preston for the rest of the evening which provided the following locos on various freights, 90035, 90028, 66182, 66129, & 66077.

Eventually my CS haulage to Edinburgh Waverley arrived in the form of 90046 which having uncoupled was seen stabled at 07.30 above. 73969 then took me on to Dundee. After taking a few pictures of 73969 at Dundee it was straight onto a Cl.158 back to Edinburgh.

I decided to come back via the ECML which I had almost ignored for the week except for two trips to Doncaster. The trip down resulted in the following sightings. Craigentinny: 08596, 73967/966 and 70816/809. Newcastle: 67003 as station pilot (see above) and 802001 on a test train. York: 57007 stabled and finally an hour at Doncaster produced 66760, 66084, 66733, 88010, 66434, 66760, 66729, & 66778 followed by Peterborough where 66767, 66601 & 66773 were seen.

I arrived at King’s Cross, my last station then took the tube to Paddington and the end of another thoroughly enjoyable all Line Rover featuring a good selection of different locos, liveries and great weather. Already looking forward to next year’s jaunt and more of the same!

Misc News: The Spanish manufacturer Talgo who will be bidding for HS2 rolling stock has picked Longannet for the location of its new factory in the UK.

Further to the photo on p33 in the September 2018 issue Breich Station re-opened on the 19th September 2018 following a complete re-build along with completion of the electrification, as seen below on the 2nd November 2018 from the A706. With the footbridge removed, access to the eastbound Edinburgh platform is now via the road bridge. The westbound platform to Glasgow is still accessed from the A71, to the right in the photo.

Barnt Green Station, West Midlands by Dave Spencer: Barnt Green is a well to do village whose station is on the former Midland main line from Birmingham New Street to Bristol Temple Meads. The station is well placed in the centre of the village and is 10 miles 48 chains south of New Street at milepost 51miles 67 chains from Derby via Whitacre and Camp Hill and about 5 chains shorter via the Water Orton cut off and New Street. It is currently the junction for the Redditch branch but was for many years the junction for the Evesham loop which rejoined the main line at Ashchurch. This was to be closed by Dr Beeching but nature got there first as a landslide blocked the line a few weeks prior to closure.

When I first moved into the area in 1973 the four platforms had a total of ten trains a day six on the branch and four on the main line. Over the years the Redditch line has prospered and grown from six trains a day to six trains per hour however apart from minor blips the main line platforms have remained at four per day two down trains in the morning for workers and school children with return trains one late afternoon for the kids and one early evening for the workers. There was a brief experimental service with a Cl.121 bubble car doing a few Barnt Green to Worcester trains, which from what I saw was never well patronised and it was soon withdrawn. I also seem to remember a morning

40 commuter train into Birmingham, I am sure I caught it once, but again short lived. This Summer all this changed when the line was electrified and the three Longbridge trains were extended to the new station at Bromsgrove and one of these trains each hour stops at Barnt Green giving an hourly service each way. A local told me that the reason only one train an hour stops is that they built a huge car park at Bromsgrove and want people to drive there rather than use Barnt Green whose small car park is always full. The photograph on the opposite page is of WMR re-livered 323203 + 323220 on the 13.16 Lichfield City to Bromsgrove at platform 2. It is a joy to report a success story.

Further to my article on the new Bromsgrove station on p11 in the September 2016 issue of TRACKS, with the introduction of the Cl. 323s, all the platforms are now in use. The Hereford services use the outer platforms and the locals the inner. I visited after 18.30 one Friday recently and car park, previously empty was packed, another success story. The following photos taken on the 9th June 2018 by Trevor Roots show the station post electrification, with XC 170523 passing through at speed.

With so many new stock moves occurring, particularly with various barrier wagons and transfers of stock between operators or into store, I thought it best to start showing these all together as this will become a regular sight over the next few years.

East Lancs Rly (ELR) Autumn Diesel Gala by Spencer Conquest: The ELR Autumn Diesel Gala was held over the weekend of the 22nd / 23rd September 2018 and has become bit of a ‘drinking & bashing’ event each year for us enthusiasts from Reading and this year was no exception. Two of our party were already on various Rovers and meeting up at Bury. Another was coming from Sheffield and there was even one who comes over each year from Holland! The rest of us travelled up on the Friday with some of the party tracking down trams in Manchester and getting 67013 for haulage from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Oxford Road.

43 having to swap locos and drive 47402 back to Bury. This disrupted the timetable for a few hours, but they seemed to cope and 47765 was up and running later in the afternoon without further issue.

47765 & 56006 Bury Bolton Street, ELR (10.46) 22nd September 2018

Unfortunately, the shed at Bury was not open to those attending the diesel weekend as apparently all volunteers are busy working, which was a shame as it appears from Baron Street gate, where I took a few pictures, they’ve quite a few other locomotives stored or receiving repairs.

The platforms and overbridge at Bury station had a quite a lot of trade stalls although not as many as previous years when they’ve had visiting locomotives. However that didn’t stop me buying a couple of books and old Railway Illustrated magazines.

The Trackside bar on Bury station was its usual busy self and has a cracking selection of real ales at very cheap prices and always a must in between taking photographs and bashing!

ELR will always get my vote as a top preserved line as it has the main ingredients to stage a successful gala. These being, a good collection of home fleet locomotives (and usually good visiting locos), an excellent pub on the station, friendly staff, easy access from Manchester and two good stations for photographs, Bury and Ramsbottom. This is usually my last diesel event of the year and is always a good one to go out on. As always I am already looking forward to next year’s line-up and perhaps a visit around that elusive diesel depot at Bury.

My trip home on Sunday afternoon was quite eventful too with the following locomotives seen in an hour and half at Doncaster and in Decoy Yard (in order of appearance): 66427/431/434/776, 70813, 37421,66783/770/421/139/760/763/769, 60087, 66733/776/119

North York Moors Rly (NYM) Steam Gala by Colin James: The NYM held its Annual Steam Gala & Beer Festival over the weekend of the 28th to 30th September. I visited on the Saturday afternoon & Sunday. Beers and ciders were to be found at Levisham & Goathland stations.

The demonstration goods train ran between Levisham & Pickering or Grosmont & Goathland over the weekend. On the Friday, the steam crane was in use in Grosmont MPD yard.

As part of the gala, two 100 year celebrations were taking place, with the RAF & NELPG owned Q6 0- 8-0 63395 being commemorated. Representing the RAF was narrow gauge Andrew Barclay 0-4-0WT [1431] ‘AIRSERVICE CONSTRUCTIONAL CORPS No1’ which worked from 1921 until 1945 at the RAF railway at Calshot Spit, Southampton, before moving to the Talyllyn Railway. It spent the weekend loaded on a LNER Lowmac as part of the demonstration goods train. 63395 returned to service from overhaul in early September 2018 and also appeared at the Severn Valley’s steam gala the week before the NYMR’s gala.

It had been hoped SR S15 4-6-0 825 would be ready for the gala, but although the boiler has passed its hydraulic test work still continues on the chassis. In a change from previous years where engines normally face south from Grosmont, 80136 had been turned to face north from Pickering offering different photographic opportunities.

46 Other steam locomotives seen at Grosmont MPD were: LMS Black 5 4-6-0 44806 (stored pending overhaul), SR WC 4-6-2 34101 ‘HARTLAND’ (under overhaul), Lambton Colliery 0-6-2T29 (under overhaul), Lambton Colliery 0-6-2T 5 (stored), BR Std 4MT 4-6-0 75029 ‘THE GREEN KNIGHT’ (under restoration), WD 2-10-0 3672 ‘Dame Vera Lynn’ (assessment for overhaul), BR Std 9F 2-10-0 92134 (under overhaul) & BR Std 4MT class 2-6-4T 80135 (under overhaul).

Diesels seen on Grosmont MPD were: 08556 & 12139 (now named ‘REDCAR’ see below by Colin James), D7628 ‘SYBILLA’, 26038 ‘Tom Clift’, DMU Cl.101 50160 + 59539 + 50164 (all operational). D2207 (fresh from overhaul see right by Colin James), D5032 (under overhaul) & D5061 & DMU Cl.101 50204 + 51511 (stored). 37264 spent the event at Pickering, returning to Grosmont on the back of Sunday afternoon’s dining train.

Services were run using 3 rakes of BR Mk1s & 1 rake of LNER Teak coaches. The dining train composed BR Pullmans & Mk1s. Services were split between Grosmont – Pickering, Whitby – Grosmont (Friday & Saturday) & Whitby – Goathland (Sunday). The demonstration freight train ran between Grosmont & Goathland (Friday & Saturday) then Pickering & Levisham (Sunday). The occasional late start was experienced, but generally services ran well to the timetable provided.

ELR Scenic Railcar Weekend by Andy Woodcock (photos by Harold Hull): ELR held its annual Scenic Railcar Weekend on the 3rd-4th November 2018 and I chose to visit on the Sunday. I arrived around 09.30 on a typical November day, though no rain initially. Staff outnumbered visitors to start with but numbers picked up as the day progressed. All advertised units were in use namely: Cl.104 50455 + 50517, Cl.117 51339 + 51382, Cl.110 51813 + 59701 + 51842, Cl.122 55001 and my highlight of the visit Cravens Cl.105 51485 + 56121. I had forgotten that these worked in the North of Scotland. 55001 did one trip with stove van 32978 to Rawtenstall and back (see below leaving Bury Bolton Street at 11.12)) D7629 did a trip coupled to Cl.110 and Cl.105/117 ran as a four car set. A note for intending visitors, the car park at Bury Bolton Street is no longer free of Sundays being £1 for all day, not unreasonable for the convenience.

49 Mid Hants Rly (MHR) Autumn Steam Gala by Colin James: The MHR held its Autumn Steam Gala over the weekend of the 19th to 21st October. I visited the line on the Sunday of the event, with the intention of travelling the line, but in the end spent the day in and around Ropley. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day but the strong sunshine and shadows caused its own issues for photography.

Visiting engines for the event were: Manor 4-6-0 7822 ‘FOXCOTE MANOR’ (courtesy of the Foxcote Manor Society), 2-6-2T 5199 (courtesy of the Llangollen Railway) & BR Std 4MT 2-6-4T 80078 (courtesy of Stuart Robinson).

2-10-0 92212 departing Ropley on 09.45 Alresford – Alton,(10.02) 21st October 2018

These joined the home fleet locos of: BR Std 9F 2-10-0 92212, LMS 2MT 2-6-2T 41312 & BR Std 4MT 2-6-0 76017. Schools 4-4-0 925 ‘CHELTENHAM’ had worked the Friday & Saturday, but was failed prior to Sunday, it’s place being taken by 76017.

2-6-2T 41312 terminating at 10.53 on the 10.40 Alresford – Ropley shuttle service, Ropley 21st October 2018

Locomotives seen around Ropley in different stages of overhaul or restoration were BR Std 4MT 4-6-0 75079, Urie S15 4-6-0 30499 & 30506, Maunsell S15 4-6-0 828, Bulleid WC 4-6-2 34105 ‘SWANAGE’ & the boiler of MN 4-6-2 35005 ‘CANADIAN PACIFIC’. Diesels at Ropley were 33202 ‘Dennis G Robinson’, 47579 ‘James Nightall GC’ & 50027 ‘Lion’. 50 4-4-0 925 stabled in the yard at 12.00, Ropley 21st October 2018

Three rakes of BR Mk1 coaches were in use for the full line length services, with a 2 coach + 2 wagon mixed traffic set being used for the Alresford – Ropley shuttles. The demonstration goods train was also in use over the full length of the line, with spaces available to travel on the Queen Mary Brake van. The timetable started off well, but around the first freight train run, it started to slip and ended up running about 30 mins late.

Ground clearance to create further siding space is taking place by expanding the headshunt / siding east of Bighton Hill road bridge and the works at Ropley. Ground has been levelled towards Alton to extend and to the south to add another siding. I was told that next year the railway would be closed for a period up to July between Medstead & Alton where bridge works and development work is taking place in the old Butts Jnct area of the line and room has to be created for the stock that is normally stabled at Alton. This has opened up a photographic view point from the adjacent field, in the short term, alongside the works site as can be seen in the following photos. Strictly speaking there is no footpath along the field boundary though one does run diagonally from near the bridge south- eastwards to the A31. 51 2-6-2T 5199 departing Ropley at 13.42 on the delayed 13.10 Alresford – Alton service, showing the cleared ground east and to the left of the existing siding, 21st October 2018

52 Nene Valley Rly (NVR) Autumn Diesel Gala by Toby Radziszewski: The NVR held its Autumn Diesel Gala over the weekend 13-14th October 2018, the same weekend ICRS attended in 2017 for the Cl.31 60th Anniversary Gala. Visiting locos were 20059, 50008 (courtesy of Hanson Traction), 50015 (courtesy of ELR) and 5580 (courtesy of MRB). Resident locos in action were D9520, 31271, and 45041. Weather was sunny but very windy, the wind got worse as the day went on. Wasn’t as busy compared to other years, maybe because of the line-up ? A good day out though.

Great Central Rly (GCR) Autumn Steam Gala by Gervase Orton: The GCR held its Autumn Steam Gala over the weekend 5-7th October 2018 and as we were in the area we called in on the on the Friday the 5th October for a couple of hours around lunchtime/early afternoon based at Quorn & Woodhouse. During this period, Thompson B1 4-6-0 1264, running as 1251 ‘OLIVER BURY’, Bulleid WC 4-6-0 34092 ‘CITY OF WELLS’ and Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48624 were seen on passenger duties, BR Std Britannia 4-6-2 70013 ‘OLIVER CROMWELL’ and 4-6-0 6990 ‘WITHERSLACK HALL’ on freights and BR Std 2-6-0 78018 appeared light engine to be turned on the Quorn turntable. When we had to leave about 12.30 78018 had been partially turned but the turntable had stuck! Trains were running pretty much to time and the weather was dry and even bright at times. The Gala seemed to be pretty well attended.

Dartmouth Steam Rly (DSR) Diesel Day by Paul Normanton: The DSR organised a diesel day on the 6th October 2018, featuring D7535 ‘MERCURY’ its last appearance before moving to SDR) t&t 6975 (its first appearance since moving from SDR) BR Std 4- 6-0 75014 ‘BRAVEHEART’ filling in on the other rake with a planned appearance of 03371 making two runs during the day. Sadly due to a driver shortage, the midday run for 03371 was cancelled but it did make an evening run, but it seems this change to the planned schedule ruined the day for some visitors that were travelling from further afield, and wouldn’t be able to get home afterwards. I know these things can happen, but I guess it’s one of the many occupational hazards that we all face from time to time, when indulging in our chosen hobby.

As well as the rostered locomotives, D3014 ‘SAMSOM’ was stabled at Paignton as was 03371 for most of the day. The weather was lousy all day to say the least, but it didn’t detract from a really nice visit with plenty of thrash, particularly on the stretch heading up the incline towards 6975 Kingswear, Paignton. Along the route were 6th October 2018 (Paul Normanton) seen D2192 ‘TITAN’, Manor 4- 6-0 7827 ‘LYDHAM MANOR and King 4-6-0 6023 ‘KING EDWARD II’. Around midday, the 25 and 37 were swapped over at Kingswear, allowing a change in power in each direction, which was an ideal photo opportunity and a thoughtful manoeuvre for those

55 following a specific loco. The loadings weren’t massive but considering the weather, it was probably still very satisfying for the organisers. The timetable went a little awry once or twice due to a few mechanical issues, but the crews did well to claw some minutes back when possible, and at the end of the day, who cares? It was a really enjoyable day out with some classic locos, friendly staff, stunning scenery and good food....somewhere I need to get to next year as I have yet to photograph most of the stock, ed.

Avon Valley Rly (AVR) End of Season Gala by Paul Normanton: The AVR are held their end of season gala over weekend 10-11th November 2018 and although my preference is for diesel power rather than steam, I decided I would pop along and support them on the Saturday, albeit more as a visitor than a participant. The event coincided with Remembrance weekend, and was tailored to amalgamate both occasions in the one weekend’s activities. I have to say that I thought the Gala was absolutely superb, very well organised with an excellent timetable and rostering of services that gave a steady flow of trains and plenty to keep visitors interested.

0-6-0T 32678 on a demonstration freight train, Bitton, AVR 10th October 2018 (Paul Normanton)

56 On arrival, the first thing to catch the attention of visitors was a collection of 2,833 handmade poppies fixed along the rear of platform 2 at Bitton station. Each poppy represented one of the 2.833 employees of The Midland Railway that sadly perished in the Great War. Additionally there was a full list of names available for personal messages of commemoration in a special visitors book. 12 displays created by South Gloucestershire Council’s Museum Group were situated throughout the visitor areas, each representing an aspect of local life affected by the Great War.

2-4-0WT 30587 Bitton, AVR 10th October 2018 (Paul Normanton)

The train services were operated by 4 main locomotives, two visitors and two from the home fleet. The visitors were Stroudley A1X ‘Terrier’ 0-6-0T 32678 (courtesy of KES) and Beattie 2-4- 0WT 30587 (courtesy of BWR). Both guest locos would have been involved in operations in the South of England during WWI hauling anything from munitions to troop or hospital trains. The home fleet locos in use were Polish Tkh 49 0-6-0T 4015 ‘KAREL’ and Austerity 0-6-0ST WD132 ‘SAPPER’. Footplate rides and brake van rides were also offered on all 4 locomotives, over the 2 day event.

Although not participating in the gala itself, the following members of the home fleet were on public display: R&H 4wDM [233519] ‘BASIL’ (see overleaf top) quite a rare event as it is normally under tarpaulins, RSH 0-6-0T [7151] Manning Wardle 0-6-0ST ‘LITTLETON No5’, Frys Sentinel 4wVBT [7492]. The Frys loco is almost ready for service now after many years of renovation. It was hoped it would be ready around now but I believe the new date for release into traffic is now Easter 2019. The photo right by Trevor Roots, taken on the 11th September 2010 shows how far it has come from that taken by myself above.

57 A heritage bus shuttle operated between Railway station and the AVR, allowing easier access for customers arriving by .

Catering was on top form today with specials on offer for the weekend, and thanks to the heavy rain showers that plagued the event on and off all day, the 2 dining coaches seemed busy most of the time as visitors sought shelter so I would suspect that sales were very good, as was the quality of the food on offer.

For the duration of the first day’s operations, everything seemed to run like clockwork with the timetable being adhered to, and no apparent problems. The effort and planning that went into this event created a very poignant occasion with the right balance between the railway operations and the remembrance day commemorations and this was hugely aided by the almost atmospheric sound of music / songs from WWI being played all day over the station public address system, something it was visibly clear to see went down very well with many of the visitors today. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable day, well planned and thought out, and presented in a sensitive and moving manner.

Great Central Rly (GCR) ‘Last Hurrah’ Steam Gala by Colin James: The GCR held its ‘Last Hurrah’ Steam Gala over the weekend of the 17-18th November 2018 and I attended on the Sunday. This was their last Gala for the 2018 season and also for BR Std Britannia 7P 4-6-2 70013 ‘OLIVER CROMWELL’ as its boiler certificate expires soon and it is to be withdrawn for overhaul. There was also a first, as Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 No.45305 ‘ALDERMAN A E DRAPER’ made its first gala appearance after joining the active roster on completion of its own overhaul. It had been hoped that Stanier 8F 2-8-0 48305 would be running after its own overhaul, but it was not quite ready for the event. Manchester Metrolink (MM) by Geoff Hope: November 2018: A campaign has been launched to rename St.Peters Square to Peterloo Square in memory of the massacre that took place on St.Peters Field on the 16th August 1819

On the 2nd November, tram 3090 was stormed by police close to the Deansgate/Castlefield stop after a male told passengers he was armed with a gun and knife. He started walking down the tracks when he was searched but no weapons were found or arrest made. On the 3rd November a tram was attacked on the Airport line shattering the door window, the culprits are believed to be 10/11 year olds. During the early hours of Monday 12th at the Brooklands stop on the Altrincham line, a van ploughed through a wall dropping 10ft onto the tram tracks. Services were up and running by 09.00.

It has been confirmed that a six minute interval service between Harbour City and Ashton, by extending the Media City line, would start from January 2019. In preparation for the winter months ice breaker trams have been in use on overnight duties. Additional double trams will be brought into service in the build up to Christmas. Three tram stops on the Bury line are to be fitted out with defibrillators for trial purposes. A major crackdown on fare dodgers during August resulted on average in 150 people a day being issued with fines. If it continues at this rate Metrolink could recover £1.4 million in fines. A campaign to tackle byelaw offences has been launched with a follow up starting in January 2019 officers will be going undercover to tackle current byelaws including bad language, smoking / vaping, drink & littering on trams and tram stops. This approach will see more prosecutions breaking byelaws as though 520 breaches were reported in the w/c 15th July 2017, no prosecutions were brought. The law allows a fine up of up to £1000.

Advertisements on tram 3014 will be encouraging people to ‘shop small and help Manchester to Bloom / Flourish’ sponsored by American Express (see above). Tram 3007 is now advertising ‘National Geographic’s Mars 2’ programme (see opposite top), this tram previously advertised ‘Crunchie Bars’. Tram 3018 has lost its ‘Call of Duty’ advert & tram 3020 has lost its poppies reverting back to its normal livery (both illustrated in the November 2018 issue). Trams 3021/3050/3092/3097 & 3109 feature ‘Noel the Elf’ branding. Tram 3036 has received an advertisement for ‘Hello Manchester’

67 (see below). Trams 3040 & 3088 are advertising ‘TalkTalk’. Trams 3052 & 3058 have returned to their original liveries from advertisements for ‘Easy Jet’ (illustrated in the November 2018 issue) and ‘Catch the Moments’ (see below).

FREIGHT MATTERS

To allow members to keep their copy UK Wagons as up to date as possible, changes are provided via this spot every month. Please let Trevor Roots know if you have any amendments or wish pass on any other helpful wagon information, contact details on page 2.

Plea for Help: Can anyone who went on our Eastleigh visit in 2018 please confirm which JSA was down the bottom of the yard by IPA car carrier 4392.692-1 and the slinger wagons. Also what was the ‘grounded’ JSA with full height ends inside next to 4039. I believe they are 4050 & 4067 but which ?

69 Correction: Amendment to check digit of IGB 33.80.4737.025-4 should be 025-3

Add to Book: (Barrier Vehicles) IWB 33.80.2797.617-8/673-1/678-0/695-4 The above have been renumbered back from Romanian 33.53.2797 xxx to their original 33.80.2797 xxx numbers and have also been re-instated on TOPS as they are being used as barrier vehicles for the Cl.717 deliveries

Delete from Book: Some RIV vans not now seen very often, if at all in the UK now. Although the following all remain on TOPS, which is massively out of date, these have all been deleted from GCU (the European database), which indicates that they most likely have been scrapped, or less likely long since re-numbered. All show as being abroad on TOPS, disappearing years ago. To be removed from the UK Wagons.

74 NEW STOCK

Though in the past I have attempted to individually show all new stock, with the flood of new stock recently delivered and proposed over the next few years and less pages to work with, it is now impractical to do so. I will continue however to show all new locos and smaller classes of units and coaches but I will only show a representative selection of the latter types, particularly from as many different members / different locations as possible or to illustrate a comparison. So if a particularly unit has not been shown but you photograph it in a more ‘unusual’ location within a reasonable time of it entering service then I will try to include it.
