APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org Introducing Physical Review Applied

• Physical Review Applied: First subscription based journal started by APS since 1950’s responding to the need of the community • Lead Editor: Troy Shinbrot, Biomedical Engineering Department at Rutgers University • Diverse Editorial Board • Our goal: To publish highest quality papers in applied physics and provide authors with a good, thorough, and speedy review process

APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org Why Physical Review Applied?

• To provide a competitive platform for applied physics research • Papers rejected from other APS journals for being too applied in the more in “traditional” applied physics such as condensed matter physics, surface and interface physics, device physics, optics, etc., have received strong citations

• APS members polled prefer to publish in APS journals • To penetrate areas not well served • Physicists working in engineering and engineers working in physics • Some examples are bioengineering, energy & advanced materials, applied soft matter APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org Our model for PRApplied

APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org Publication Criteria for all Physical Review Journals

It is the policy of the American Physical Society that the Physical Review accept for publication those manuscripts that significantly advance physics and have been found to be scientifically sound, important to the field, and in satisfactory form.

APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org What makes a successful PRApplied submission?

Papers should be: • Be forward thinking and provide a clear vision for future directions in applied physics, either in physical understanding or in technology • Present a qualitative, and not merely a quantitative or incremental, advance over prior work • Interest a large group of physicists and those using physics to make progress in other fields

APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org Where is PRApplied now?

• October will be our ninth issue • In the last eight issues, we have published 68 papers and 3 Editorials • Of those 68 papers, 5 have been Letters, 10 have been selected as Editors’ Suggestion and 9 have been highlighted in Physics • 10 papers have already been published in October We have 12 more papers in production

APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org What do we have planned?

• Search for a “Review Editor” who will lead the Review Articles section of the journal

• Start publishing Review Articles • Work to increase good submissions, especially in more non-traditional applied physics fields • Search for Remote Associate Editors to expand expertise and increase exposure

APS JOURNALS journals.aps.org Final thoughts

For a submission to be successful, a paper must: Significantly advance physics Be scientifically sound Be important to the field In satisfactory form

Although the results presented in a paper is the most important part of a paper from a scientific point of view, if it is not well written, well structured, and well reasoned, the content will not be appreciated.
