  • 15! Phish—Comprised of Trey Anastasio on Guitar and Lead Vocals
Phish—comprised of Trey Anastasio on guitar and lead vocals; Mike Gordon on bass and vocals; Page McConnell on piano, keyboards, and vocals; and Jon “Fish” Fishman on drums and vocals—formed at the University of Vermont (UVM) in the early ‘80s and became one of the most successful rock bands ever. Their success story is built upon a rare combination of raw talent, strategic business acumen, and various moments of rock and roll serendipity. An abbreviated synopsis of Phish’s formation helps to place their trajectory and subsequent press coverage in context. Recognized as the first Phish gig, Anastasio, Gordon, Fishman, and brief member Jeff Holdsworth played as Blackwood Convention at a UVM cafeteria on December 2, 1983. In late 1984, they adopted the name Phish, reportedly in homage to Fishman. Through this period in the early-‘80s they were also joined by brief member Marc “Daubs” Daubert on percussion and occasional guest Steve Pollack, “The Dude of Life.” In May, 1985, nearby Goddard College student Page McConnell joined the band for the first concert collaboration of what would eventually become the four constant Phish members. McConnell was invited to join the band permanently in September that year. In spring of 1986, Holdsworth graduated from UVM and left the band. With the departure of Holdsworth, Phish’s current four-member lineup emerged (Mockingbird, 2004, p. 5). Gehr (1998) explained that “Phish had covered several Dead tunes during their first couple of years together but soon dropped them to avoid the onus of being pigeonholed as yet another Dead cover band” (p.

Moskovitz LIBR 200-12: Information Communities Dr. Michael Stevens April 29, 2015 Abstract Fans of the band Phish are a large and unique community requiring information and social connectedness to thrive. By examining and evaluating scholarly literature on information communities, music fans, Phish and Phish fans, as well as popular, fan-generated sources and informal conversations with fans, this research paper serves to create a comprehensive overview of this community. It focuses on their information needs, practices and preferences and their !2" Moskovitz:"Phish"Fan"Research"Paper/Spring"2015" information seeking behavior. The author finds that Phish fans seek information on a variety of topics related to their fandom and do so mostly via internet-based and user-generated websites and social networking. The research reveals that this information community values social interaction as well as technology and often exploits both to reinforce and satisfy their information goals and social bonds. The author also critically analyzes the findings and resources available to the Phish fan community and provides suggestions for information professionals on how to better assist this community with their information needs." Introduction “Birds of a feather are flocking outside.” –Phish Birds of a Feather (Phish, 1998) The phrase “birds of a feather flock together” is a fitting metaphor for music fans and information communities. Fisher and Durrance (2003) define an information community as a group that forms around a specific need for information. Music fans are not a new type of information community.

  • Album Review
Undermind PHISH, 2004 Elektra 62969-2 Phish called it quits in the summer of 2004, disappointing legions of their ‘‘phans’’ with a decision that was ultimately an interesting exercise in artistic integrity. Put succinctly, they were not feeling it any more. Three-quarters of the band felt that they had run their course; that they had had a great ride—one marked by phenomenal successes, most of which were hardly noticed by mainstream media and culture—but knew or felt, somehow, that enough was enough. No acrimonious fights and no bitter rifts. They wanted, quite simply, to go out on top. Chief among their concerns was a fear of becoming a nostalgia act, of turning into caricatures, of rehashing themselves and their songs beyond the point of healthy return. It was a fascinating decision by a fascinating band. The band built up a loyal and dedicated following due, in large part, to the nature of their concerts. Both set lists and song duration were ever changing. The band fashioned a sound that drew from a wide array of influences and musical styles or genres, evident not only in their own songs, but in their choice of cover material (one of a few key elements of the Phish experience). As with 1960s icons the Grateful Dead (a facile and often misguided comparison), no two Phish performances were ever alike. And it was this element of surprise and discovery that kept phans positively hooked. Followers of Phish formed and maintained a bona fide, full-blown (sub)culture and they provide a rich and fascinating case study indeed.

Understanding ‗It‘: Affective Authenticity, Space, and the Phish Scene By C2010 Elizabeth Anne Yeager Submitted to the graduate degree program in American Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie J. Tucker Date approved: April 18, 2011 iii Abstract ―Understanding It: Affective Authenticity, Space, and the Phish Scene‖ is an ethnographic study of ―scene identity‖ around the contemporary rock band Phish. Utilizing data generated from six years of ethnographic fieldwork, including over one hundred and fifty interviews with Phish scene participants, this project explores how the production of space at Phish shows works to form a Phish scene identity. I contend that the identity of the Phish scene, what the band members and fans refer to as ―it‖ and I call a spatial articulation of affective authenticity, is produced and formed by scene members themselves, drawing from the interrelations between the production of space (practices that create a specific environment) at shows and a white, middle and upper-middle class cultural memory of the Grateful Dead scene. I situate this process amidst a cultural backdrop of 1980s and 1990s identity politics and in particular, multiculturalism and suggest that Phish scene identity be analyzed as a middle class performance of resistance that achieves community and meaning without resisting class privilege.

rec.music.phish › Interview with Jon Fishman (April '92) 1 post by 1 author Shelly Culbertson (+Spector) 7/19/92 This is a few months old, but Jon just returned to me his copy of this transcript with comments and corrections. This conversation took place 3-4 am after the show at the Hilton in Eugene. It's not really a conventional interview, but I think that the ideas Jon expressed were interesting enough to bear posting here, and I hope you think so too. :-) Shelly --------------------------------------------------- Interview with Jon Fishman, Eugene, Oregon 4/22/92 (When we started rolling the tape, we were talking about galaxies, since Jon had been looking at a book about them the day before -- _Galaxies_, by Timothy Ferris) JF: ...That's incredible. They had side views of our whole galaxy. Basically, from really far away, our entire galaxy is just a disk. It looks just like in the movies, they portray UFOs as these glowing disks that are bulging in the middle, like Saturn; that's what the galaxies look like. They're all like these little spaceships sitting there. I think the ultimate engineering project is to learn how to use light as power and then over time, through eons, learn how to engineer your galaxy into a spaceship and actually be able to move it with intention through space. Here are all these galaxies and stars in space and they're all moving along, at least that's the theory, and expanding away from each other. Things are moving and probably very few if any have any control over what direction they're moving.

Jamband expert Dean Budnick coined the term shortly thereafter to describe bands that perform long, improvised jams during their live shows. As these improvised shows have increased in popularity, they have become great spectacles, featuring light shows, filmed images, dancing, storytelling, and short plays. While the performance happening inside the arena deserves study, there is an equally interesting performance that takes place in parking lots before and after the shows.
