Live Among the White Trash: a History of Nono----Manman on Stage
Live Among the White Trash: A history of nono----manman on stage “There are no No-Man concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future.” (from the official no-man website) Anyone who has followed no-man’s career over the previous ten years or so will be acutely aware that the band does not play live. If no-man “exist” as a band at all – and their infrequent releases mean they are more an ongoing understanding between two men rather than an active unit – it is only in the studio. Over a series of uncompromising albums no-man’s music has become ever more complex, yet ironically, “live sounding” than the release which proceeded it. But this organic “liveness” is mainly an illusion; the feeling of spontaneity often the result of numerous edits and takes which only the precision of studio work can produce. Others have tried to perform equally difficult music live: Radiohead ambitiously thrusting their clicks-and- cuts post-rock upon the world’s stadiums, for example. But for a variety of reasons, no-man simply haven’t tried – at least, not since 1994 and not until a one-off performance in 2006. The only comparable case is Talk Talk’s retreat into the studio in the late 1980s. Both bands have undoubtedly crafted their best work without going near an audience. 1 But it wasn’t always so. no-man were once very much a live act, promoting singles and albums with dates and undertaking two full-blown tours – though they rarely played outside London, never went further north than Newcastle, and never played outside Great Britain. -

Mark's Music Notes for December 2011…
MARK’S MUSIC NOTES FOR DECEMBER 2011… The Black Keys follow up their excellent 2010 album Brothers with the upbeat El Camino, another great album that commercial radio will probably ignore just like it did with Brothers. In a day and age where CD sales are on the decline, record labels continue to re-issue classic titles with proven track records in new incarnations that include unreleased material, re-mastered sound, and often lavish box sets. Though not yet included in Music Notes, Pink Floyd and Queen both had their entire catalogs re-vamped this year, and they sound great. Jethro Tull’s classic Aqualung album has been expanded, re-mixed and re-mastered with the level of care and quality that should be the standard for all re-issues. The Rolling Stones have already released expanded remasters and box sets on Exile On Main Street and Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out, and now their top selling album, Some Girls has received the same treatment. Be Bop Deluxe is a 1970’s band that most readers will be unfamiliar with. They never had any mainstream success in the U.S., but the band had several great albums, and their entire studio catalog has recently been remastered and compiled into a concise box set. The Black Keys – El Camino Vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach and Drummer Patrick Carney of The Black Keys, have said that they have been listening to a lot of Rolling Stones lately, and they set out to record a more direct rock and roll album than their last album, Brothers was. -

100 GREATEST GUITARISTS Hammett: oNe iN A MiLLioN “innovative”. KiRK HaMMEtt By Ol Drake For me, Kirk Hammett is one of the More stars on their top guitarists greatest metal guitarists ever – and also one at classicrock of the most underrated. The thing about magazine.co.uk his playing is that, while he can certainly shred, that’s not all he does. Kirk has his own voice and style – and to me, that’s ADMiRABLe NeLSoN instantly recognisable. BiLL NELsON The problem is that everyone knows By Brian Tatler Metallica’s songs so well that what he contributes is overlooked. More than that, Bill Nelson was one of my favourite people take him for granted. You walk guitarists in the 1970s. I used to into a guitar shop at any time, and the } listen to Be Bop Deluxe albums a lot, chances are you’ll hear someone “Davy O’List’s and Bill’s solos always seemed very playing one of his solos, from a song tasteful, not bluesy, just kind of like One. And there will always be guitar playing soaring. I really liked his playing and a bright spark going: “That’s just was incendiary, some of it rubbed off on my boring. Anyone can play that.” The technique, particularly songs such as point is that not everyone can play borderline Jet Silver (And The Dolls Of Venus), what Kirk did on something like One, psychotic. Maid In Heaven and Crying To The Sky and he also came up with it in the first – they all had these fabulous, place. -

A flagship project of the New York Philharmonic, the NY PHIL BIENNIAL is a wide-ranging exploration of today’s music that brings together an international roster of composers, performers, and curatorial voices for concerts presented both on the Lincoln Center campus and with partners in venues throughout the city. Through these explorations, the band has created what Journal Wired called "a genre of music unto itself, eclectically derivative in a bold way and spectacularly innovative in the old-fashioned sense of genuine originality." Guitarist/composer Mike Johnson's music combines lyricism with intense and sophisticated rhythmic and harmonic ideas. The band grew out of the basement recording experiments of Johnson and bassist/drummer Bob Drake in the early eighties. In 1982 they formed an ensemble for live performance. They released their first LP, "..a thinking plague," in 1984 on their own Endemic label. They produced and engineered the record themselves, and used minimal funds borrowed from friends or scraped together amongst themselves to press it. Each album cover was hand painted by Bob Drake. Intent on making more powerful recordings and dissatisfied with the chemistry of that first lineup, Johnson and Drake disbanded the group. They began recording new songs and began working with a singer/songwriter named Suzanne Lewis. In 1987 their second album, "Moonsongs," was released by Dead Man's Curve in London. The record was described as "stunning" by Option. In early 1989 reed player Mark Harris joined the group, making clarinet, saxes and flute permanent features of the sound. -

I was always impressed by Penny Rimbaud’s statement that the later Crass singles were issued as “tactical responses” to given situations. I started off writing and editing Fanzines, and it is only for reasons of my own that I decided to issue this magazine like Dear Friends, clockwork every Saturday, more recently every Friday. And so, what was planned to be an ordinary “ring in the old, ring out the new” (or is it But I think that the job of a magazine is a the other way round?) type issue has complex one, and I wouldn’t really like to completely gone out the window. Because clarify it into words, but it seems right that Lemmy dying has completely let the cat we document such an important event, amongst the cultural pigeons in a way that (which does appear to be lifechanging for one suspects the old bugger would have some people) into a special edition of Gonzo enjoyed.
