Palandöken Mountains covering an area of 70 km wide and 25 km high on the south of the city center was proclaimed to be a Winter Tourism Center in 1993. Erzurum, where there are Konaklı and Kandilli ski centers, offers service for winter tourism with ice halls and jumping towers. In Erzurum where snow asserts itself between October-November, skiing season begins at the beginning of November and continues till the end of April. Palandöken sustains the power snow feature which enables skiing for a whole skiing season due to its climate. Climate conditions are convenient for the winter tourism at the uttermost. The mean temperature is -5,-9 °C throughout the winter lasting for 5 months. Palandöken Mountains is among skiing areas of first-degree importance and of first priority for Turkey with regards to winter sports and winter tourism and carries the feature of being an international station in terms of freestyle skiing and touristic movements in winter. The city, having hosted 25. Universiade Winter Games, became one of the new attraction centers of Turkey and the world for winter tourism. 6 7 PALANDÖKEN SKI CENTER Palandöken Ski Center among the longest and the steepest tracks of the world has an altitude difference between 2000 -3176 m. There are 7 easy, 8 middle and professional tracks and 4 natural tracks within the ski center. 10 chairlifts, 1 teleski, 2 baby lifts and 1 gondola lift offer service within the center. With gondola lift, one can reach to Ejder Tepesi to 3176 m with one climb. The ski center having some attractive tracks for alpine discipline and snowboard gives the opportunity to various activities such as paragliding, mountain climbing, snow tube and paintball. There are two registered tracks by Federation of International Ski for big slalom competitions. Approximately 12 thousand people can do skiing at the same time on all tracks. “Gaz-Ex” artificial avalanche triggering system has been established in order to prevent potential avalanches. 8 9 PALANDÖKEN SKI CENTER In the Palandöken Ski Center, which can serve skiers at any level, there are 2 hotels with 5 stars, 1 hotel with 3 stars and 1 with 2 stars. Total bed capacity inside both private and public facilities is 2681. However, numerous hotels with 2 or 3 stars serve in the city center. The distance of ski center 15 km away from the airport is only 4 km. Transportation is provided by Erzurum Metropolitan Municipality busses within non-business days and by private cars and taxies only in the remaining days. 10 11 KONAKLI SKI CENTER The ski center which commenced service with 25. Universiade Winter Games was built within an altitude difference of 2200-3185 m on an area of 460 hectare. Due to the different gradient ratios, the center can offer service to skiers of all levels. On Konaklı area potentially having 16 tracks, supplying a total skiable area of 288 hectare is being planned. The ski center with 6 mechanic facilities serve for 14 thousand skiers at the same time. Within Konaklı serving in all branches necessitated by the alpine discipline, there are Men’s Giant Slalom (2.960- 2.340 m), Men’s Big Slalom (2.852-2.495), Men’s Slalom (2.695-2.495), Women’s Giant Slalom (3.045-2.495), Women’s Big Slalom (2.850-2.495) and Women’s Slalom (2.695-2.495) Tracks. Konaklı Ski Center is placed upon Erzurum-Çat Highway and 22 km away from the city center. There are ski rental, sales and counter services, cafe, restaurant, resting centers and service units intended for meeting the daily needs of athletes and visitors using the ski center. Sprint track with the height of 1.297 m and width of 9-12 m has an altitude difference of 22 m. Maximum climbing is 19 m and the total climbing is 30 m. The lowest point is at 1.713 m and the highest point at 1.735 m.     25 th Winter Universiade in Erzurum, January 27 th – February 6 th , 2011 Dear Sport Friends, As you know, the 25 th Winter Universiade to be held in Erzurum from January 27 th to February 6th , 2011, is approaching very fast and I would like to share with you some important information which you will find necessary and will make your preparation easier. The information here- under concern the travel, accommodation, visa and rifle & ammunition procedures. Travel All delegations will be responsible for the costs related to travel from their city of origin to Istanbul or Ankara (Turkey). Upon entrance in Turkey, all delegations are considered as guests of 2011 WU Organizing Committee. Free of charge charter flights to Erzurum will be arranged from Istanbul (Ataturk airport) and Ankara. The number of charter flights per day will be known later on. Delegations that will arrive late in the evening will be transferred and accommodated free of charge to a hotel designated by the OC. Air transportation to to Erzurum will be organised the next day. There will be special welcome desks in Istanbul and Ankara airports, which will assist each delegation to transfer to their relevant charter flight. The support team will be composed only by professionals especially trained by Turkish Airlines. The 2011 WU Erzurum OC would recommend all delegations to preferably fly to Ankara as the internal transfer from the international to the domestic terminal is less difficult. Photo: Turkish Red Crescent The situation Reportedly 217 people were killed and 1,090 wounded in Turkey, due to a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck at 13.41 (local time), around 12 miles (19 km) from the eastern city of Van (Van Province) on 23rd October 2011. 970 buildings have collapsed and electricity and telecommunications services have been disrupted in the city of Van and the nearby town of Erciş (Van). Damage to buildings has also occurred in parts of the neighbouring Bitlis and Hakkari Provinces. In addition, disruption has been reported at Van Ferit Melen Airport (VAN, Van province), although the facility remains open, and flight services are continuing. The authorities had previously diverted flights bound for the airport to Erzurum Airport (ERZ, Erzurum province). Several aftershocks have been reported, and rescue and relief operations are under way. Disruption to the supply of essential services, including water, electricity and telecommunications, can be expected in Van Province in the near term.
