These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange, new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.’ Star Trek is a half-century old. The first ever episode of the original television series aired on September 8th, 1966. The fifty-minute show (or one hour, considering advertisements), on the NBC network, was entitled ‘The Man Trap’, and concerned an alien predator which disguised itself as human in order to entrap, and kill, its victims. It was science fiction, but science fiction that could appeal to both a younger and an older audience. Cast demographics steered toward the latter: the two main characters (Kirk & Spock) were played by actors who were both thirty-five years old, while the third most important character (McCoy) was played an actor who had only four years to go to reach his own half-century.(1) If younger people might be wooed by the science fiction element, more mature viewers could find plenty to enjoy in terms of pure drama. The dialogue was generally excellent because it was character-centric, and the acting was always of the highest quality. Many of the writers who would contribute to the series already had a －17－ reputation for producing thought-provoking sci-fi –writers like Richard Matheson, Theodore Sturgeon and Harlan Ellison.

    Science Fiction as the Mythology of the Future “The universe is made of stories, not of atoms.” Muriel Rukeyser Introduction Science fiction is clearly the most visible and influential contemporary form of futurist thinking in the modern world. Why is science fiction so popular? As I will argue, one main reason for the popularity of science fiction is that it resonates with all the fundamental dimensions of the human mind and human experience. It speaks to the total person about the future. At the outset, let me provide a working definition of science fiction. Although not all science fiction deals with the future, its primary focus has been on the possibilities of the future. In this regard, science fiction can be defined as a literary and narrative approach to the future, involving plots, story lines and action sequences, specific settings, dramatic resolutions, and varied and unique characters, human and otherwise. It is imaginative, concrete, and often highly detailed scenario-building about the future set in the form of stories. In this chapter I describe the historical development of science fiction as an approach to the future tracing its origins to science and evolutionary theory, secular philosophy, technological forecasting, mythology, and the philosophy of Romanticism.1 Within this historical review, I consider the rich array of futurist themes and issues examined in science fiction. I also describe the diverse functions and innumerable strengths of science fiction as a mode of future consciousness. My central arguments are: • Science fiction engages all the fundamental capacities of the human mind; it generates holistic future consciousness.

But I just had to write about this one, because … well, it’s just great! But we will get to that later. Released 13 november 2007 1, this film was first conceived in the early 1960s by Jerome Bixby 2, and then filmed as an independent filmed in 2007 in just 8 days 3. One thing which is very apparent, is that this film has been in the back of Jerome’s head for more than 40 years. And it has aged to perfection. The movie starts of with Professor John Oldman who has prematurely left a goodbye- party in his honor. We see him packing his car when his fellow colleagues catch up with him, they eventually begin to ask why he is leaving. John then tells them he is 14 000 years old, and is just “moving on” so that he is not discovered. This leads into a rather in- teresting debate about immortality, religion and the truth. The movie ends with a nice, and quite unexpected turn. The most impressive and amazing feature about this movie is the setting. Everything in the movie is happening around a little house in the woods. Where the main character tells his friends about his rather special life.
