    Alessandro Magnasco, an unconventional painter A few days after its presence at Paris Tableau fair, Canesso Gallery is presenting an exhibition on Alessandro Magnasco (1667-1749), focusing on "the mature years of an anti-conformist painter". It is benefiting from a first-class partner, as Genoa's Musei di Strada Nuova are loaning several works. The exhibition will be moving to the Palazzo Bianco in the artist's native city from 25 February to 5 June 2016. A neat way of doing justice to a painter whose extremely free and personal style, highly popular with the great lords of Milan, where he spent half his life, was ridiculed by the Genoese on his return to the city in 1735. Although famous in his lifetime, with several imitators but no pupils, Magnasco rapidly sank into obli- vion before being rediscovered in the early 20th century. Viewers can now appreciate his touch, tense to the point of anxiety, in the twenty paintings on show. While "Entertainment in a garden at Albaro" seems reminiscent of Watteau, this unclassifiable painter shows us a far less civilised vision of nature in "Saint Augustine at the Seashore", where the landscape breaks free of convention to depict an unbridled nature that would have impressed many 19th century artists. Magnasco thus oscillated between religious themes and dark subjects of disturbing reality, evoking Callot, Salvator Rosa and Goya. He darkened his palette at the end of his life, making brilliant play with chiaroscuro, as in "Il Pittor Pitocco" ("The beggar painter" photo), lent by a private collector. Camp scene Oil on canvas, 110 x 98 cm The unpublished painting depicts a spectacular monumental interior where hordes of soldiers, vagabonds, beggars and storytellers are crystallized in a multitude of activities typical of a camp. In the work, based on the stylistic and formal characteristics, we can clearly identify the hand of Alessandro Magnasco which can be contextualized in the first decade of the eighteenth century, during his stay at the Florentine court. Magnasco, known as Lissandrino, is considered one of the most original painters of the Italian eighteenth century. Moving from Genoa to Milan in 1682, he was a pupil of Filippo Abbiati and came into contact with contemporary Venetian painting made of color and light. From 1703 to 1710 Magnasco was in Florence, in the service of Ferdinando de 'Medici, at whose court he came across a series of painters and engravers who between the 17th and 18th centuries had dedicated themselves to the development of the so- called genre of painting " charged and playful "like Stefano della Bella, Jacques Callot, Salvator Rosa: landscapes with scenes animated by small figures of friars, gypsies, woodcutters and acrobats inserted in large scenarios. The realization of the work in question takes place in this period.

From Cattelan to Zurbarán – Tributes to Precarious Vitality strikes up a dialogue between 17th-century artworks and contemporary pieces in an attempt to extricate the concept of the Baroque from its conventional stylistic pigeonhole, moving away from clichés such as pomp, rich ornament, or gold and instead focusing on the Baroque as a "tribute to precarious vitality": the riotous yet uncertain nature of existence. The show juxtaposes works by great 17th-century masters such as Pieter Aertsen, Giovanni Battista Langetti, Alessandro Magnasco, José de Ribera, Jan Steen, David Teniers the Younger, Simon Vouet, and Francisco de Zurbarán with that of renowned contemporary creators like Maurizio Cattelan, Robert Crumb, Urs Fischer, Glenn Brown, Tobias Madison, Paul McCarthy, and Cindy Sherman, among others. Rather than drawing superficial thematic and formal analogies, the exhibition attempts to enable the two realities, with all their differences and affinities, to collide, cross-fertilize and permeate each other, inviting the audience to see them in a whole new light. In the words of Bice Curiger, curator of the exhibition, Riotous Baroque does not seek to "host a festival of masterpieces", nor does it attempt to "proclaim a neo-Baroque stylistic tendency"; rather, it aims to bring an art separated from us by several centuries into the world of the comprehensible, the world of experience: "In our age of massive revolutions in visual and communications media, revisiting an epoch that celebrated the visible and the sense of sight as a popular allegorical motif is both pleasurable and meaningful.

Kress Foundation do- nation of 23 paintings. The pair was acquired by Kress in 1930 from John S. Thacher, Washington DC and previously owned by the Earl of Suffolk, Charlton Park, Malm- esbury, Wiltshire (Sold, Landscape with Washerwomen 2015 EX, normal light Landscape with Figures 2015 EX, normal light Spink & Son's, London, 1930.) The artist Alessandro Magnasco was born in Genoa in 1667 to a minor painter apprenticing with Valerio Cas- tello then in Milan with Filippo Abbiati. Magnasco lived most of his life in Lombardy, chiefly in Milan. His paint- ings are most highly prized for their lively compositions, brilliant brush work and subtle color harmonies. He emulated the painterly technique that Peter Paul Rubens brought to Genoa via Venice, raising the expressive style of loose, free and dashing brushwork to an intense melodramatic pitch. Magnasco‘s painting was strik- ing and original, transcending the academic Baroque style of his contemporaries. His work was principally influenced by Morazzone, Jacques Callot and Salvator Rosa.
