Muti, D. de Sarno Prignano, Antonio Marini: Painter (1668-1725), Rimini 1991, pp. 232-3, fig. 73 (as Antonio Marini); MS. Proni, Antonio Maria Marini: The complete work, Naples 1992, pp. 152-3, fig. 2.21 (like Marini with a previous attribution to Marco Ricci) Antonio Maria Marini (Venice, February 9, 1668 - Venice, December 15, 1725) He was born in Venice to a Paduan father in 1668, but spent his youth in Padua, where he trained as painter. Around 1693 he was certainly in Bologna, as testified by Reverend Domenico Mauro Doria Montini. In February 1694, he married Caterina Pirondi in Bologna and at that time exercised his art in the same city and in the surrounding area. In these years he probably knew Antonio Francesco Peruzzini or at least had the opportunity to see some of his paintings. In fact, Marini's works are strongly influenced by Salvator Rosa's painting, whose suggestions he may have assimilated through the work of Peruzzini. He carried out some works for Count Zambeccari, today at the National Pinacoteca of Bologna, including two Marine storms and other landscapes: all these paintings denote a pre-romatic sensitivity, characteristic of Rosa. He moved to Padua around 1700 and came into contact with Sebastiano Ricci, who was working in the Basilica of Santa Giustina. In 1702 the artist moved to Venice, where in 1707 he married in second marriage with Elisabetta Costadoni. The twenty paintings purchased by Lord Edward Irwin date back to this period of the early eighteenth century and are still found at the Temple Newsam House, an annex to the City Art Gallery in Leeds. Specialized in the painting of landscapes rendered in a "spectacular" way, Antonio Marini belonged to the Venetian school. He also painted battles (Quadreria Emo Capodilista - Padua). He used a technique with broad strokes, as can be seen in the painting "Mountains with natural arch and knights" (1710-1720?), An arcadian and imaginative landscape, preserved at the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo [3]. This way of painting is also common 1 / 3 anticSwiss 27/09/2021 04:06:11 http://www.anticswiss.com to other painters in the Po area, also very different, such as Alessandro Magnasco and Marco Ricci. In fact, a large part of its production was erroneously attributed to Ricci and often also to Magnasco, Rosa and Guardi. In his works, depth is rendered by the superimposition of planes at different distances, the figures are just outlined with rapid brush strokes, denoting a freedom of writing unthinkable for those times [1]. It was thanks to him that today you can admire the true portrait of Dante at 32 or 33 years of age, painted by Giotto around 1298. • Gallery Painting in Italy, 1700-1800
Gallery Painting in Italy, 1700-1800 The death of Gian Gastone de’ Medici, the last Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany, in 1737, signaled the end of the dynasties that had dominated the Italian political landscape since the Renaissance. Florence, Milan, and other cities fell under foreign rule. Venice remained an independent republic and became a cultural epicenter, due in part to foreign patronage and trade. Like their French contemporaries, Italian artists such as Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Francesco Guardi, and Canaletto, favored lighter colors and a fluid, almost impressionistic handling of paint. Excavations at the ancient sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii spurred a flood of interest in classical art, and inspired new categories of painting, including vedute or topographical views, and capricci, which were largely imaginary depictions of the urban and rural landscape, often featuring ruins. Giovanni Paolo Pannini’s paintings showcased ancient and modern architectural settings in the spirit of the engraver, Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Music and theater flourished with the popularity of the piano and the theatrical arts. The commedia dell’arte, an improvisational comedy act with stock characters like Harlequin and Pulcinella, provided comic relief in the years before the Napoleonic War, and fueled the production of Italian genre painting, with its unpretentious scenes from every day life. • Alessandro Magnasco, an Unconventional Painter
Alessandro Magnasco, an unconventional painter A few days after its presence at Paris Tableau fair, Canesso Gallery is presenting an exhibition on Alessandro Magnasco (1667-1749), focusing on "the mature years of an anti-conformist painter". It is benefiting from a first-class partner, as Genoa's Musei di Strada Nuova are loaning several works. The exhibition will be moving to the Palazzo Bianco in the artist's native city from 25 February to 5 June 2016. A neat way of doing justice to a painter whose extremely free and personal style, highly popular with the great lords of Milan, where he spent half his life, was ridiculed by the Genoese on his return to the city in 1735. Although famous in his lifetime, with several imitators but no pupils, Magnasco rapidly sank into obli- vion before being rediscovered in the early 20th century. Viewers can now appreciate his touch, tense to the point of anxiety, in the twenty paintings on show. While "Entertainment in a garden at Albaro" seems reminiscent of Watteau, this unclassifiable painter shows us a far less civilised vision of nature in "Saint Augustine at the Seashore", where the landscape breaks free of convention to depict an unbridled nature that would have impressed many 19th century artists. Magnasco thus oscillated between religious themes and dark subjects of disturbing reality, evoking Callot, Salvator Rosa and Goya. He darkened his palette at the end of his life, making brilliant play with chiaroscuro, as in "Il Pittor Pitocco" ("The beggar painter" photo), lent by a private collector. Sophie Reyssat Canesso Gallery, 26 Rue Laffitte, Paris 75009 - Until 31 January 2016.

Camp scene Oil on canvas, 110 x 98 cm The unpublished painting depicts a spectacular monumental interior where hordes of soldiers, vagabonds, beggars and storytellers are crystallized in a multitude of activities typical of a camp. In the work, based on the stylistic and formal characteristics, we can clearly identify the hand of Alessandro Magnasco which can be contextualized in the first decade of the eighteenth century, during his stay at the Florentine court. Magnasco, known as Lissandrino, is considered one of the most original painters of the Italian eighteenth century. Moving from Genoa to Milan in 1682, he was a pupil of Filippo Abbiati and came into contact with contemporary Venetian painting made of color and light. From 1703 to 1710 Magnasco was in Florence, in the service of Ferdinando de 'Medici, at whose court he came across a series of painters and engravers who between the 17th and 18th centuries had dedicated themselves to the development of the so- called genre of painting " charged and playful "like Stefano della Bella, Jacques Callot, Salvator Rosa: landscapes with scenes animated by small figures of friars, gypsies, woodcutters and acrobats inserted in large scenarios. The realization of the work in question takes place in this period.
