Ich fand Kisten mit Briefen, handgeschriebenen Texten, Tagebüchern, Photographien und Zeichnungen, die dort gelagert waren. Als ich alles durchsah, fiel mir auf, dass viele dieser Dokumente alt wurden, und ich rief ganz blauäuigig jemanden an, der etwas von Konservierung verstand. Er sah sich die Sammlung an und gab mir eine Art psychologischen Weckruf, indem er sagte: „Nora, diese Papiere sind sehr bedeutsam für die amerikanische Kultur und die amerikanische Geschichte. Du solltest sie sehr Ernst nehmen und gut darauf achtgeben.“ Das war mein erstes Gespräch mit Jorge Arevalo, der unser Archivar wurde. So ganz nebenbei zeigte er mir, wie man solche Dokumente schützt, und dann reifte in mir die Idee, sie nicht nur zu konservieren, sondern auch der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen. Und das ist, was das Archiv heute leistet: Es ist ein Ort, an dem Menschen die Original-Dokumente anschauen können, darunter sehr viele, die nie veröffentlicht wurden, um sich ein weitgefasstes Bild über die Arbeit meines Vaters machen zu können.“ Eine Aussage, die man gut als Quizfrage hernehmen könnte: Wer ist der Vater, über dessen Nachlass eine gewisse Nora hier spricht? Leider müssten wohl selbst sehr viele Amerikaner bei dieser Frage passen. Nora heißt mit Nachnamen Guthrie, und jetzt ist es ganz leicht: Nora ist die Tochter von Woody Guthrie. Um ihn, den großen amerikanischen Folk-Musiker, dreht sich die heutige Sendung, und zu der begrüßt Sie ganz herzlich Luigi Lauer. --- CD Woody Guthrie, Hard Travelin´, Track 1, This land is your land, 2:46 --- This land is your land – das berühmteste Lied von Woody Guthrie und Amerikas Folk-Hymne schlechthin. Es war als Parodie auf „God Bless America“ gedacht, Guthrie hasste dieses Lied, wie er heute vermutlich „America first“ hassen würde, gäbe es auch dazu ein Lied. Guthrie, Jahrgang 1912, stammt aus dem Städtchen Okemah im Bundesstaat Oklahoma. Die Gegend gehörte zur Dust Bowl, der Staubschüssel. Man hatte riesige Flächen urbar gemacht, um Getreide anzupflanzen und dafür das Präriegras gerodet. Verheerende Staubstürme waren die Folge und machten halbe Bundesstaaten unbewohnbar. Das geschah ausgerechnet vor und während der Wirtschaftskrise in den 1930-er Jahren. Hunderttausende, Okies genannt wegen Oklahoma, gingen auf der Suche nach Arbeit auf Wanderschaft. Die Route 66 gelangte so zu ihrem ehemals traurigen Ruhm. Auch Woody Guthrie verließ Oklahoma, verdingte sich in allerlei Jobs und kam 1940 nach New York, wo er „This land is your land“ schrieb. Als junger Mensch, der aus gehobenen Verhältnissen stammte, hatte er früh das meist erbärmliche Leben der Arbeiter hautnah kennen gelernt und begann, seine Beobachtungen in Lieder zu fassen. Dust Bowl Ballads wurde sein erstes und erfolgreichstes Album, es erschien 1940. Guthrie sich in links-ökologischen Bewegungen und Gewerkschaften und schrieb zahlreiche Lieder, auch für die kommunistische Partei. In konservativen Kreisen kam das nicht gut an. (O-Ton Nora Guthrie 2004): „Mein Vater stand schon während des Krieges auf der schwarzen Liste wegen seines Engagements für die Gewerkschaften, die Friedensbewegung und für die kommunistische Partei. Er war zwar kein Mitglied, soweit wir wissen, lieferte ihnen 2 aber über längere Zeit ihren Soundtrack.“ McCarthy, ein Blender, Betrüger und Lügner, trieb nach dem Krieg die Verfolgung Linker auf die Spitze. China war gerade kommunistisch geworden, Russland hatte seine erste Atombombe gezündet. McCarthy, dem noch ein Thema fehlte, um als Senator wiedergewählt zu werden, setzte auf die rote Karte. „Left wing, chicken wing, it´s all the same to me“, hat Woody Guthrie dazu einmal gesagt, „Linker Flügel, Hähnchenflügel, für mich ist das Alles dasselbe.“ Die einfache und scheinbar unverfängliche Sprache verhinderte oft, dass die Lieder zensiert wurden. Aber nicht immer. Offensichtlich hatte man Angst vor der Kraft seiner Texte. (O-Ton Nora Guthrie): „Der Grund für die Wirkmacht der Lieder ist, dass sie ganz einfach wahr sind. Sie beruhen entweder auf tatsächlichen Ereignissen oder auf existentieller, spiritueller Wahrheit. Und alle sind in der letzten Zeit wieder aufgetaucht, als durch die Wahl Donald Trumps dunkle Wolken des Faschismus in Amerika aufzogen. Wir haben also diese Lieder, um gegenzuhalten. Überall im Land demonstrieren die Menschen für verschiedene Ziele, seien es die Gesundheitsvorsorge, die Bürgerrechte, die Gleichstellung der Afro-Amerikaner oder die Abschiebung von Mexikanern. Die Lieder meines Vaters sind wie ein Index von Liedern, die man jetzt singen sollte. Es beeindruckt und bewegt mich sehr, wenn ich heute Mexikaner, die abgeschoben werden sollen, das Lied „This Land is your Land, this Land is my Land“ singen höre. Oder wenn Frauen dieses Lied im Kongress singen für Gleichberechtigung und all solche Themen. Das ist ergreifend. Die Haltung, die man in diesen Liedern wiederfindet, ist nichts Geringeres als das Fundament der Demokratie. Und die Lieder werden recyclet und gesungen, lauter und von mehr Menschen als je zuvor. Gerade passiert Folgendes: Das Wiederaufleben der Energie dieser Lieder hat dazu geführt, dass Menschen, metaphorisch wie buchstäblich, ihre Stimme wiederentdeckt haben. Es ist hinreißend und macht mich stolz, dass mein Vater all diese Fragen behandelt hat und all diesen Gruppen den Soundtrack ihres Lebens gegeben hat. Dafür kämpfen wir jetzt in Amerika. Es sind Lieder einer wirklichen Demokratie.“ --- CD Woody Guthrie, Hard Travelin´, Track 2, Pastures of plenty, 2:25 --- Pastures of plenty, Weiden des Überflusses – auch dies eines der bekannteren Lieder Woody Guthries. Die Dust Bowl und die damit verbundene Migration in fruchtbare Gegenden werden erwähnt, in denen die Arbeiter das Rückgrat der Nation bilden und ein entsprechend würdevolles Dasein verdienen. Wer sich für tiefschürfende Informationen zu Woody Guthries Liedern und zu seinem Leben interessiert, dem sei das Woody Guthrie Centre in Tulsa, Oklahoma, empfohlen. Dessen Entstehung ist etwas konfus. Bereits 1972, fünf Jahre nach dem Tod Guthries, wurde die Woody Guthrie Foundation gegründet mit dem Ziel, Guthries Erbe zu bewahren. Nachdem Tochter Nora Guthrie, wie eingangs von ihr beschrieben, 1990 Materialien bei dem Musikmanager und Filmproduzenten Harold Leventhal entdeckt hatte, wurde der Grundstock für das eigentliche Archiv gelegt, das 1996 der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wurde, in Mount Kisco, New York – bis heute Wohnort von Nora Guthrie. (O-Ton Nora Guthrie 2004): „Das Archiv beschränkt sich nicht darauf, Dokumente zu erhalten, und wir wollten 3 auch nicht zuviele Erläuterungen geben und Zeitbezüge herstellen. Woodys Gedanken gehören in die Zeit derjenigen, die sie anschauen, mit ihren aktuellen Fragestellungen. In diesem Sinne sind es die Archivbesucher, die definieren, was Sinn und Zweck des Archivs sind, je nachdem, was sie wissen wollen und wonach sie suchen. Ein Beispiel: Wenn Krieg herrscht, ist der Fokus auf Material gerichtet, das Gedanken zum Krieg beinhaltet. Dann kommen viele Menschen ins Archiv, denen Woodys Gedanken zu Krieg oder Faschismus oder Gewalt und so weiter wichtig sind und die entsprechend auswählen. Das Faszinierende an der Arbeit im Archiv ist nicht, was wir die Besucher lehren können, sondern, was diese in Woodys Worten finden. Und das lehren sie uns.“ Das spiegelt die Arbeit von Woody Guthrie wieder. Auch er war ganz nahe bei den „Folks“, er war selber Teil der Bewegungen und sammelte ein, was ihm bemerkenswert erschien. (O-Ton Nora Guthrie 2004): „Er sagte immer, die besten Ideen habe er von den Leuten auf der Straße. Der Unterschied sei nur, dass er sich die Zeit nahm, sie aufzuschreiben und dafür zu sorgen, dass sie sich reimten (lacht).“ Wie fortschrittlich Guthrie bereits in den 1930-er Jahren war, zeigt sich auch darin, dass er die Gleichstellung und Gleichbehandlung von Frauen selbstverständlich fand. Woody Guthrie, ein Feminist? (O-Ton Nora Guthrie): „Absolut! „She came along to me“, eines der Lieder, die Billy Bragg aufgenommen hat, wäre nicht möglich gewesen, wenn die Frauen nicht als Teil des Ganzen gesehen worden wären. On February 16, 1940, a freezing blizzardy day, Woody Guthrie—short, intense, and aged twenty-seven—ended a long hitchhiking journey East and debarked in Manhattan, where he would quickly make a name for himself as a per- former and recording artist. Nearly twenty-one years later, on or about January 24, 1961, a cold and post-blizzardy day, Bob Dylan—short, intense, and aged nineteen—ended a briefer auto journey East and debarked in Manhattan, where he would quickly make a name for himself as a performer and recording artist—not as quickly as Guthrie had, but quickly. Dylan had turned himself into what he later described as “a Woody Guthrie jukebox,” and had come to New York in search of his idol. Guthrie had come to look up his friends the actors Will Geer and Herta Ware, who had introduced him to influential left-wing political and artistic circles out in Los Angeles and would do the same in Manhattan. Two different stories, obviously, of two very different young men a generation apart—yet, more than he might have realized, Dylan partly replayed his hero’s entrance to the city where both men would become legends.

This publication brings together two significant bodies of work – the songs and stories he recorded for the Library of Congress, and the material he created when hired to write songs for the Bonneville Power Administration. There have been records released in the past of the Library of Congress recordings, but this collection is the first time that the complete and unedited Library of Congress sessions have been released. The songs from those recording dates have been available in the past – notably from Elektra and from Rounder – but we offer here the full body of work, including the hours of Woody Guthrie talking and telling his story. TO THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND BPA RECORDINGS, we have also added material which Woody recorded for governmental or quasi-governmental efforts – some songs and two 15-minute radio dramas for the Office of War Information during the Second World War and another drama offered to public health agencies to fight the spread of venereal disease. Bush in 2004, political pundits were quick to credit Christian evangelicals with providing the margin of victory over Democratic challenger John Kerry. An article in The New York Times touted presidential adviser Karl Rove as a genius for focusing the attention of his boss upon such “moral” issues as same-sex marriage and abortion, thereby attracting four million evangelicals to the polls who had sat out the 2000 election.1 The emphasis of the Democratic Party upon such matters as jobs in the economically-depressed state of 9a Ohio apparently was trumped by the emotionally-charged issues of gay marriage and abortion, which evangelicals perceived as more threatening to their way of life than an economy in decline. This reading of the election resulted in a series of jeremiads from the political left bemoaning the influence of Christians upon Christian Left: American politics. In an opinion piece for The New York Times, liberal economist Paul Krugman termed President Bush a radical who “wants to break down barriers between church and state.” In his influential book What’s The Matter with Kansas?, Thomas Frank speculated as to why working-class people in Kansas, a state with a progressive tradition, would allow themselves to be manipulated by evangelists and the Republican Party into voting against their own economic interests.

Shannon1 Woody Guthrie's 1948 song "Plane Wreck At Los Gatos (Deportee)" demonstrates Guthrie's talents not only as a songwriter, cultural worker, activist, but also as documentarian, journalist, and media critic. The song describes a plane crash that took the lives of 28 unnamed Bracero workers being deported to Mexico in January 1948. More, the song's grammatical, linguistic, and syntactical sophistication encourages listeners to consider not just the tragedy of the crash, but also the conditions of workers, and the politics of media coverage of the "others" serving the US agricultural system. Beyond those specific political concerns, the song also preserved the memory of the victims of the titular plane crash, leading to the rediscovery of their names after 60 years. This reading of the song contextualizes Guthrie as a critic of mass media as well as a laborer in that field. The song is informed by Guthrie's work as a journalist and novelist as well as his time as a songwriter, recording artist, and performer.     Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956-1966 September 29, 2006, through January 6, 2007 Exhibition Labels Exhibit Introductory Panel I Think I’ll Call It America Born into changing times, Bob Dylan shaped history in song. “Life’s a voyage that’s homeward bound.” So wrote Herman Melville, author of the great tall tale Moby Dick and one of the American mythmakers whose legacy Bob Dylan furthers. Like other great artists this democracy has produced, Dylan has come to represent the very historical moment that formed him. Though he calls himself a humble song and dance man, Dylan has done more to define American creative expression than anyone else in the past half-century, forming a new poetics from his emblematic journey. A small town boy with a wandering soul, Dylan was born into a post-war landscape of possibility and dread, a culture ripe for a new mythology. Learning his craft, he traveled a road that connected the civil rights movement to the 1960s counterculture and the revival of American folk music to the creation of the iconic rock star. His songs reflected these developments and, resonating, also affected change. Northern Minnesota seems an unlikely place to produce an icon of popular music—it’s leagues away from music birthplaces like Memphis and New Orleans, and seems as cold and characterless as the South seems mysterious. Yet growing up in the small town of Hibbing, Bob Dylan discovered his musical heritage through radio stations transmitting blues and country from all over, and formed his own bands to practice the newfound religion of rock ‘n’ roll.

Her first project, in 1992, was the publication of a lost songbook of Woody’s original lyrics and illustrations, Woody’s 20 Grow Big Songs. Nora co-produced the accompanying album with her brother Arlo Guthrie, which received a Grammy nomination in the Best Children’s Album category. In 1994, Nora co-founded the Woody Guthrie Archives with Harold Leventhal and archivist Jorge Arevalo. In addition to managing the Archives and preserving her father’s personal materials and original creative works, Ms. Guthrie develops and produces new projects which continue to expand Woody Guthrie's cultural legacy. In 1996, the Woody Guthrie Archives was open for free research to scholars and students, making Woody Guthrie’s personal & professional collection available for the first time to the public. In 1996, Ms. Guthrie co-produced the first ever Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum Tribute series honoring Woody Guthrie. Main events consisted of a scholarly symposium held at Case Western Reserve University and a tribute concert in Cleveland’s famed Severance Hall.

    HISTORICAL NOTES Tracing Woody Guthrie and Huntington’s Disease Jorge Arévalo,1 Joanne Wojcieszek, M.D.,2 and P. Michael Conneally, Ph.D.3 ABSTRACT Tracing the outlines of Woody Guthrie’s life can be maddening. His outpouring of songs, words, and images attests to the rare creative spirit which possessed him like a devil, or angel, more often both. He was a figure which many of us hold dear as an emblematic American symbol of outspoken and independence-minded social consciousness. Drawn from Guthrie’s collection of published and unpublished material in the Woody Guthrie Ar- chives, including song lyrics, poems, prose, artwork—in short, every imaginable form of manuscript—the shadows that form and delineate Guthrie’s life keep moving, much like dancing flames reflecting off a wall, illuminating some details while obscuring others. Guthrie, of course, had no choice about Huntington’s disease (HD) or how it would impact his life. Characteristically, he moved with it, sang with it, and even danced with it. When HD finally silenced Guthrie in 1967, it nevertheless spurred his second wife, Marjorie Mazia, to action—action which continues today with the commitment and work of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA). Was it tragic? Or just the natural course of the disease? The interplay between artistry, inspiration, and devastation is what we explore here. This reflection causes the stone to sparkle, which enhances our appreciation of its beauty. The arts, too, are gems with many facets. Each work - a musical composition, painting, poem, dance, or play - captures our imagination whenever we take the time to experience it from many different angles. These perspectives allow us to expand what we know about a work and to intensify our responses to it.
