A preliminary health survey was conducted in Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay Region, Myanmar, in February 2020 to assess the health conditions of an ASGM community. Respiratory function and other clinical assessments were evaluated in miners and non-miners, and participants’ hair was analyzed for heavy metals. Respiratory function of miners was similar to that of non-miners. However, miners’ respiratory function declined with longer mining activity duration. In total, 3 out of 18 miners showed neurological signs and symptoms of chronic mercury intoxication. The median concentration of the hair mercury was significantly higher in miners than non-miners (P = 0.01), and 9 out of 18 miners and 2 out of 11 non-miners showed the warning level of mercury.

  • Title Precious and Base Metal Mineralization in Kwinthonze-Nweyon Area, Singu and Thabeikkyin Townships, Mandalay Region, Myanmar
Title Precious and Base Metal Mineralization in Kwinthonze-Nweyon area, Singu and Thabeikkyin Townships, Mandalay Region, Myanmar All Authors Tin Aung Myint1*, Than Than Nu1 , Min Aung2 Publication Type International Publication Publisher (Journal name, PROCEEDINGS OF SUNDALAND RESOURCES 2014 MGEI ANNUAL issue no., page no CONVENTIONMasyarakat Geologi Ekonomi Indonesia (Indonesian Society of etc.) Economic Geologists) Gold-silver and associated base metal mineralization occurs in the Kwinthonze- Nweyon area within the Mogok Metamorphic Belt (MMB) in Myanmar. The area is mainly underlain by high-grade metamorphic units and intrusive rocks. Gold-sulphide bearing quartz veins are predominantly hosted in gneisses and marbles. Numerous faults striking N, NNE, ENE and E to ESE with moderate to steep dips occurred in the area. The veins are characterized by banded, colloform, cockcade, breccia and some vuggy textures. The vein-related alteration is characterized by silicification, sericitization and chloritization from the inner to the outer zones. Principal metallic minerals are pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, arsenopyrite in addition to electrum. The mineralogy of the vein is recognized into three paragenetic stages. Stage 1 is pre-mineralization stage. Stage 2 is main mineralization stage and stage 3 is post-ore carbonate Abstract stage. Quartz with minor sulfide, mainly pyrite was deposited during stage 1. Precious and base metals were precipitated during stage 2. In this stage, adularia is common. Gold and silver are more enriched in the veins containing abundant adularia than virtually quartz rich veins. In stage 3, the veins are barren. Bullion fineness data of the whole area display a wide range of fineness (416-875).

  • BLUE SAPPHIRES from the BAW MAR MINE in MOGOK Hpone-Phyo Kan-Nyunt, Stefanos Karampelas, Klemens Link, Kyaw Thu, Lore Kiefert, and Pierre Hardy
FEATURE AR ICLES BLUE SAPPHIRES FROM THE BAW MAR MINE IN MOGOK Hpone-Phyo Kan-Nyunt, Stefanos Karampelas, Klemens Link, Kyaw Thu, Lore Kiefert, and Pierre Hardy In the last five years, fine Burmese blue sapphires from the Baw Mar area of Mogok have reached the market. The faceted stones typically show a strong pleochroism from greenish to violetish blue when viewed perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis, respectively, with medium to strong saturation and medium to dark tone. Most of the samples were relatively clean under the microscope, showing multiple twinning with whitish needle-like inclusions (presumably boehmite) at the intersections. Often, these in- clusions were associated with stress tension fissures. Needles, most likely rutile, were found only occa- sionally, but small platelets and needle-like particles, probably ilmenite, appeared more frequently. Most of the stones contained surface-reaching open and healed fissures, but crystal inclusions of K-feldspar and mica (identified by Raman) were occasionally encountered. The sapphires also had a relatively high iron content, low gallium, and very low titanium. Their Ga/Mg ratio varied from 0.6 to 17. Their UV-Vis- NIR spectra displayed intense iron-related absorptions, and the FTIR absorption spectra presented mainly boehmite- and mica-related bands. Based on careful microscopic observations, combined with spectro- scopic and chemical analysis, the sapphire from Baw Mar can, in most cases, be distinguished from the blue sapphire of other localities. or several centuries, Burmese blue sapphires have been prized in the gemstone trade. Virtually Fall gem-quality blue sapphires from Burma (now Myanmar) have occurred in alluvial deposits along the Mogok Stone Tract.

Generally, the study area falls within the northern part of the Mogok Metamorphic Belt (MMB). It is bounded by King chaung in western part and the well-known left-lateral strike slip fault, Momeik Fault, in northern boundary of the study area. And thus, the main lithologies exposed are variety of Mogok Series, they are paragneiss and orthogneiss, many types of marbles and calc-silicates that host gem-quality rubies, sapphire and some quartzite. These rocks are intruded by peridotite, granites and various suite of syenites. According to mineralogical and textural evidences study area is affected regional metamorphism and, locally, contact metamorphism (metasomatism). On the basis of mineral assemblages, upper amphibolite to granulite facies has been recognized. The time of metamorphism of the study area can be assigned to Early Cretaceous to Early Eocene and peak- condition occurred in early Cretaceous to Oligocene and younger event would take later, probably in Early Miocene. Key words: Mogok Metamorphic Belt, mineral assemblages, granulite facies Introduction The study area is situated about 8 miles north west of Mogok in Mandalay Region. • Dense Jungle Green to Write This Foreword, Seeing I Have a Very Close and Intimate Touch with the B.C.M.S
Dedicated to my Mother, who first dedicated me. FOREWORD By REAR-ADMIRAL SIR HARRY H. STILEMAN, K.B.E. I ACCEPT with pleasure the invitation of the author of Dense Jungle Green to write this Foreword, seeing I have a very close and intimate touch with the B.C.M.S. Mission in Burma, through the link of family ties, and personal acquaintance with every member of the mission staff, except my grand-daughter, born in the Hukawng valley last autumn. I have watched the growth and development of the mission with prayerful interest and attention ever since its inception, and rejoice in the remarkable results attained. The method of pure evangelism in contradistinction to excessive institutionalism is the plan upon which this Mission has worked: every missionary first and foremost an evangelist; and, coupled with that, an absolute reliance upon the Word of God to do the work that the Holy Spirit intends, of convicting and converting. The plain, statesmanlike setting forth in these pages of the results of this breakaway by B.C.M.S. from institutional work, and adherence to the principle laid down by the Apostle to the Gentiles of "preaching the Word of the Lord," brings conviction home that "this thing is of God," and has received the smile of His approval. It certainly calls forth our joyful praise. The author touches but lightly on the hardships of himself and all his eo-workers, in joumeyings often, in perils of waters, in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often; but there is a significant passage in chapter xviii bearing upon this subject, which runs as follows: "The missionary who takes too much into account the preservation of his own skin, will lose in the long run, for he will never establish the close contact with the people necessary if he is to be used of God." Certainly our missionaries have not spared themselves, but have given their very best to carry the Gospel Message to the people and tribes in their own mother-tongue.
