Noise-Driven Wave Transitions on a Vertically Falling Film
J. Fluid Mech. (2002), vol. 462, pp. 255–283. c 2002 Cambridge University Press 255 DOI: 10.1017/S0022112002008856 Printed in the United Kingdom Noise-driven wave transitions on a vertically falling film By HSUEH-CHIA CHANG, EVGENY A. DEMEKHIN AND SERGEY S. SAPRIKIN Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, Notre† Dame, IN 46556, USA (Received 12 December 2000 and in revised form 28 January 2002) We decipher the rich and complex two-dimensional wave transition and evolution dynamics on a falling film both theoretically and numerically. Small-amplitude white noise at the inlet is filtered by the classical linear instability into a narrow Gaussian band of primary frequency harmonics centred about ωm. Weakly nonlinear zero- mode excitation and a secondary modulation instability then introduce a distinct characteristic modulation frequency ∆ ωm. The primary wave field evolves into trains of solitary pulses with an average wave period of 2π/ωm. Abnormally large ‘excited’ pulses appear within this train at a relative frequency of ∆/ωm due to the modulation. The excited pulses travel faster than the equilibrium ones and eliminate them via coalescence to coarsen the pulse field downstream. The linear coarsening 1 of wave period downstream is a universal (0.015/ u )scm− and the final wave frequency is the modulation frequency ∆ for 0.1 <δ<h i 0.4 where u is the flat-film average Nusselt velocity, δ =(3R2/W )1/3/15 is a normalized Reynoldsh i number, R is the flat-film Reynolds number and W the Weber number. 1. Introduction The wave fields of an open-flow, convectively unstable system often exhibit a large range of wave amplitude, wavelength and wave speed downstream. -

Theopoetics to Theopraxis Toward a Critchlean Supplement to Caputo’S Radical Political Theology
Theopoetics to Theopraxis Toward a Critchlean Supplement to Caputo’s Radical Political Theology Calvin D. Ullrich Abstract The theological turn in continental philosophy has beckoned several new possibilities for theoretical discourse. More recently, the question of the ab- sence of a political theology has been raised: Can an ethics of alterity offer a more substantive politics? In pursuing this question, the article considers the late work of Jacques Derrida and John D. Caputo. It argues that, contrary to caricatures of Caputo’s “theology of event,” his notion of theopoetics evinces a “materialist turn” in his mature thought that can be considered the beginning of a “radical political theology.” This position is not without its challenges, however, raising concerns over deconstruction’s ability to navigate the immanent but necessary dangers of politics. In order to attempt to speak of a form of “radical political theology”— i.e. a movement from theopoetics to theopraxis—the article turns to some of the political writing of Simon Critchley. It is argued that a much desired “political viscerality” for a radical political theology is supplied by Critchley’s anarchic re- alism. The latter is neither conceived as utopian nor defeatist, but as a sustained program of inventive and creative political interventions, which act as responses to the singularity of the situation. A Reading of the Waste Land in Juxtaposition with Theology
“Dying with a Little Patience”: A Reading of The Waste Land in Juxtaposition with Theology Jaimee Poole A thesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) 2020 School of Culture and Society ii Abstract Literature holds a distinct value in providing an image of human experience that enriches theological discussion and invites substantial reflection on human existence. This thesis follows Paul Fiddes’s method of juxtaposition for literature and theology to offer the possibility of an “opening of horizons” between the two disciplines. In following with this method, an exegetical reading of T. S. Eliot’s 1922 poem The Waste Land is juxtaposed with an exposition of three relevant theological themes: devotedness and desire, tragedy, and eschatology. This account of Eliot’s poem primarily focusses on the image of living death that Eliot develops through a description of the unintelligibility of tragedy, and the breakdown of the self that is the consequence of this state of death in life. The poem raises a question of the possibility of restoration in light of this experience of tragic suffering. Theological accounts of desire, tragedy, and eschatology, particularly the work of Sarah Coakley, Donald MacKinnon, and Fiddes, respectively, elicit responses in terms of the theological horizons that Eliot’s depictions of human experience raise. The study of literature and theology is invaluable in creating a theological landscape that engages with the mediating contribution -
