10 Society In The Spotlight: Panto Soc

This week, TheGryphon interviews George Vickers, amember of LUU’sPantomime Society, inorder to learn more about what distinguishes the society from all others.

ThePantomime Society is acheerful and welcoming theatre society that en- courages anyone, regardless of their cultural background or acting skills, to be- come part of their spectacular shows and close-knit family.Pantomime, more commonly known as ‘panto’, is aBritish form of amusical comedyproduction, designed for family entertainment, and so often revolves around fairy tales or children’sstories. Common features of pantomime include slapstickhumour, music and dancing. It is usually performed during the holidayseason, typi- cally during Christmas and New Year’s. This year PantoSoc have performances scheduled in October and December.

What is the Pantomime society?

Our society specialises in outrageous student pantos. Every year at Christ- mas, we put on ashow, and believeme: it’snothing like the pantomimes you’ll have seen as akid!

When and whydid youjoin the society?

Ijoined at the start of my first year of university,in2012. My mate, Adam from sixth form, had joined the year before and he knew Iwas into musi- cals so he recommended it to me. After Itook part in the audition, Iknew I would be missing out if Ididn’tget apart.

What is your role in the society?

I’m directing this year’sshow: ‘Sleeping Beauty (Untucked)’.

Nestled in amaze of takeaway-littered, student-dominated streets sits the Hyde Park Picture House, astunning Grade-II listed building that has been showing films for over100 years after its inception in 1914. Thecinema is one of the oldest in the country, and the only functioning gas-lit cinema in the UK.

Theinterior feels like alove letter to the lost glamour of cinema, with deep red seats and thickcurtains around the screen, with abar where youcan buy popcorn and real ale without breaking the bank. Similarly, the tickets are muchless pricey than the cinema chains in town.

Thepicture house shows films from across the spectrum: from those so edgy they make cereal cafes look mainstream, to the usual Hollywood heavyweights –whatever the owners feel like showing at anygiven time. They also put together themed events, suchastheir ‘Creatures of the Night’ screenings, where they showold classics late at night, and host directors and critics for Q&Asessions after some screenings.

Throughout next week, Macbeth will be showing, with Michael Fass- bender playing the titular Scotsman in amoodyupdate of arole that has been revered by so manyactors.

On October 10th, there will be a‘Creatures of the Night’ screening of the 90s classic Clueless to celebrate its 20th anniversary.Asif. Student tickets are £5.50 and can be bought through the Hyde Park Picture House website. Don’tmiss out on anight that looks set to be, like, totally awesome.

MOST girls would go weak at the knees at the prospect of chatting to arugbyplayer–perhaps more so if we’re talking Club Captain of the University of Leeds RugbyUnion side. Cue Charlie Harbord. Thethird-year International Relations undergraduate is everything Ianticipated rugby‘Gryphon guru’ to resemble –his pleasingly apparent articulation, paralleled with an outgoing personality, would make him anyinterviewer’sdream and muscle mass does not come in short sup- ply.Iwas, however, taken abackbyhis explosive enthusiasm on one thing in particular –Varsity.

This annual October clash is afar cry from the average rugbystadium atmosphere where fans mingle, applaud in unison and equally rate playerperformances. Choruses of intimidating chants are sung, Beckett and Uni fans are separated, alcohol inside the stadium is banned and the referee really is the man in the middle of it all. Harbord seems unfazed however.

“It’sahuge spectacle -one of the biggest games that the boys will ever playin,”hetells me. And he really does mean big. Forthe past seven weeks, the Club Captain for one of Leeds’ biggest sports societies has been rising at half six in the morning on four days out of fivetomotivate the 25-man squad that has been selected to playinthe Varsity rugbyfinale at Headingley Carnegie stadium next Wednesday.

“I feel very proud and privileged to be in this position –it’samassive responsibility because you knowthat thirteen-and-a-half thousand people will witness the work that you’ve overseen and or- ganised. It’sincredibly exciting.”There is certainly an air of excitement about Harbord as he tells me whythe Gryphons are optimistic about bettering their five-point defeat that they succumbed to in the final moments of last year’sfinale. Thecaptain blames the three weeks of pre-season training as the reason behind everything being “all abit frantic” when it came to matchday.

This year, though, the boys have been determined to rewrite their wrong. “This is the long- est and hardest the team has ever been training. We’vecome backearly with real intent to attack this season,”hesays. As Isat listening to Harbord, Isuspected that the freedomtoenjoy Fresh- ers’ week for the players seemed somewhat limited. Asense of embarrassment crept overmeas Ithought of the amount of Domino’spizza Iwould soon inevitably consume outside the Union, and my respect for this unknown group of lads suddenly grew. The squad’s7am gym starts are fuelled by acarb-loading and protein-shaking daily regime. Alcohol isn’tofficially banned, but it’s hugely frownedupon and is therefore practically non-existent (so too, Iassume, is hitting Fruity on aFridaynight). But Harbord assures me that morale in the team is kept high and downing pints of water at their weekly Wednesdaynight social in Revolution is enjoyedjust as muchasthe gruel- ling hill sprints in RoundhayPark.

Thefact, however, that the Gryphons have failed to beat Beckett at Varsity for the past two years might be the driving force behind this seven-week intensive regime. Lingering on this thought, Iasked whether the boys would prefer afine game of afternoon rugbyonthe lawn at Weetwood rather than having to hear the ‘lip and chat’ (as Harbord tamely describes it) beneath the clamorous roars at the Carnegie stadium. Harbord, however, has his response ready. “I don’tthink there’sany more pressure than what we’ve felt in the past. We’ll definitely give it our best shot and this year Ithink we’ve got agood chance.”

“Weknowthat we’re extremely privileged to have the opportunity to showcase our sport –none of us take that for granted. We will try our best to make the game the best showpiece and spec- tacle for people to enjoy–whether they love rugbyorare just coming along for alaugh.”He believes that it is the sport itself whichmakes it the perfect medium to achieveafierce yetcon- trolled rivalry at at crunchmatchlike Varsity. “Rugbyisone of those games where youcan have afierce competition on the pitch. Alot of people just see it as boys running into one another and causing car- nage, but it’salot more technical than that.”

Iwouldn’thavesaid the word ‘carnage’ springs to mind when watching rugby–it’srather hunkysort of blokes in tight tops. But then Iwouldn’tassociate Varsity with rugbyand all its traditional civility. It’sanything but when you’re aspectator, but then if it wasn’t, it wouldn’tbeVarsity.
