Welcome to Young 5'S Kindergarten! Meet Your Teacher: Mrs. Bishop Welcome to Young 5’s Kindergarten! Meet your teacher: Mrs. Bishop Welcome to Young Fives Kindergarten! We are going to have an AMAZING year of learning together. I can’t wait to dive into learning with you! I am very eager to begin the school year with engaging and exciting activities for Knapp’s young learners. I am a graduate of Western Michigan University with a degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Early Childhood, Social Studies, Science, and Language Arts. This fall will be my fourth year at Knapp and my twenty-fifth year teaching. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family; husband Scott and children Hillary (19) and Grant (17). As a family, we love watching movies, attending sporting events, spending time together, and traveling. In my free time I enjoy reading, painting, watching movies, shopping and spending time creating new things to explore and teach my students. I am so very excited to start our journey of learning. We are going to have a wonderful time! Enjoy your summer. I can’t wait to see you in the fall! Supply List: **Please do not label supplies with your child’s name. Materials will be shared amongst the class. There is a lot of opportunity for growth in their motor, social, and emotional skills. We use Zoo phonics for letter sounds and recognition, Haggerty and Tara West Literacy and Handwriting Without Tears. We also use themes to guide our learning and discover more about our world. A few themes that we cover include Penguins, Dinosaurs, Fall, Plants, and Gingerbread stories. Exciting Opportunities With school of choice, parents have an opportunity to choose a school for their child. With that in mind, parents have to look at many different aspects of a school and decide which would be the best fit for their child and allow their child to develop academically. Knapp Academy has the best of both of these: a perfect fit for any child and exceptional academics. Knapp teachers greet students at their doors with a warm welcome and handshake making students feel appreciated and cared for as soon as they enter the classroom. With that mindset, students feel more comfortable to express themselves and try their best in class. Students also participate in activities where they get to know each other, respect differences, and learn from each other’s strengths. A Standard of Excellence The Young 5’s and Kindergarten team is very focused on making sure your child meets all of their educational objectives. We take pride in giving every student the best educational experience and we do this by teaching the students at their own individual level. We work closely with one another to make sure that we are sharing our strengths and weaknesses as a team. We meet weekly to plan strategies and resources that will best meet the state objectives as well as the needs of our students. I hope to see a lot of parental support as we work together to help your child achieve and have academic Mrs. Dabkowski success. Hello and welcome to first grade! I graduated from Cornerstone University amidst the craziness this last spring with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and minors in reading and language arts. • Horror Movie Aesthetics
HORROR MOVIE AESTHETICS: How color, time, space and sound elicit fear in an audience. Thesis Presented by Xiangyi Fu to The Department of Art + Design In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Information Design and Visualization Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts May, 2016 2 ABSTRACT Fear is one of the most basic and important human emotions. At very beginning of movie history in 1895, when the audience first saw the Lumieres Bothers’ The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station on the big screen, almost the entire audience tried to escape from the theater. The image of the approaching train caused fear. To intensify feelings of fear in the audience, film artists use sound, lighting, timing, motion and other stylistic devices. Among the wide range of film genres, especially horror movies aim to trigger a physiological and psychological response of fear in the audience. Within the genre, horror films differ widely from each other based on their time period, sub-genre, and regional differences including religious and cultural motifs. There many different ways of investigating how horror movies accomplish to terrify and horrify an audience, for example, via an analysis of plots, characters, and dialogue. This thesis examines what constitutes the different cinematic styles of horror movies – color/ lighting, time/motion, spatial relationships, and sound – in different horror movies. The result of my research is presented in an interactive visualization of cinematic aesthetics that enables a cinematic student to explore the patterns of how those elements are applied on the screen and can ultimately trigger and influence an audience’s mood.

LOGICS OF ATTENTION: WATCHING AND NOT-WATCHING FILM AND TELEVISION IN EVERYDAY LIFE Dan Hassoun Submitted to the faculty of the University Graduate School in partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Communication and Culture, Indiana University June 2019 Accepted by the Graduate Faculty, Indiana University, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Doctoral Committee Co-chair: Barbara Klinger, Ph.D Co-chair: Ilana Gershon, Ph.D Stephanie DeBoer, Ph.D Joan Hawkins, Ph.D Ted Striphas, Ph.D June 5, 2019 ii Acknowledgements This is a project about the ways people understand how they pay attention or not pay attention to media in their daily lives. I was especially interested in the many fleeting and half-forgotten things that we do as we watch—the things that constantly happen around us that threaten to disrupt or lead us away from our watching. Writing this dissertation has been its own exercise in managed attention. As anyone who has sat down to cobble together thoughts on a page can attest, writing is a process of countless distractions, diversions, disruptions—some external, many others self-imposed—but almost all of which tend to be smoothed over or ignored when reading the final product. That this project is completed in its present form owes its fact to the colleagues, friends, and loved ones who helped me through the process and ensured that the many diversions encountered along the way indeed remained only fleeting hiccups. I owe so much to my advisors Ilana Gershon and Barbara Klinger.
